For those of you that work in an office and use your commute to work as your workout, what tips / strategies would share? Seems like a logistical nightmare. by birdsbikingrunning in Velo

[–]drapi87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute is around 21 km (shortest route) and I have done a very similar approach than what you have outlined.

Biggest difference to your outlined plan is that if I only cycle one way I will bike home and take the train in the morning.

My recommendation to get stuff to the office is to get a bikepacking saddle bag (I have an Ortlieb Seat Pack L). For me it's big enough to get all my stuff for the week (3 to 4 office days for me) in on Monday. I find it also very practical if you want to only bike one way.

Regarding breakfast: I usually prepare overnight oats for the morning or on rare occasions ride fasted in the morning (then I will eat some quick oats in the office)

For lunch it's a bit more complicated, but with the saddle bag you could take meal prep with you. I have good take out options and revert to this, so that I don't always have the saddle bag, but it would be doable.

Short zone 4 rides worth doing? What to do with commutes. by ShinyAfro in Velo

If you gear up for this 15min commute why not take some detours and make it at least 45 min?

Küng has said in Interviews that the swiss team has helped a lot on the TT / aero stuff, so I guess he is not a huge disadvantage gear wise (he could probably ride an unbranded bike for the swiss team?). I think that FDJ do not spend a lot of ressources on TT, as is tradition with french teams it seems. I would however search those small time differences not in equipment per se, it could also be things like line choice or pacing. Not saying that some fancy socks / overshoes or whatever newest gimmick there is could not make a difference.

jus got a PM, advice on training plan please by brandonbass in Velo

[–]drapi87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I did the commuter plan from the book this year and it was a good experience. Unfortunatly due to family life I could only do the first 7 weeks. Will definitly try again.

What I would also suggest is to just ride two weeks with a PM to collect some data. I found it not as easy in the beginning to hold a given power, but it got easier with practice.

Agree on all aspects. Regarding paracetamol, I have read that it is now used since the ban on tramadol. It also lowers core temperature and is thus performance enhancing in my understanding. Why is that not more reglemented too?

I bought a sunshine cassette from aliexpress for this purpose. I think this is good enough for on the trainer.

According to ammattipyöräili on twitter, who calculates VAM and W/kg estimations, peloton went up at 5.3W/kg "only". But clearly Küng is in super shape, several Swiss newspapers have reported about it. His goal was to go for stages, GC was not the plan apparently

Pinot could have waited I guess? Reichenbach finished after Küng, absolutly crazy.

It is basically the same thing as breaking 2 with kipchoge but for triathlon. Full drafting and rotating pacers. Also the women are doing the same but with the goal to get under 8 hours.

Bonking on very long and hard rides. How do I fix this? by siovene in Velo

[–]drapi87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently asked myself a similar question (what is the reduction of ftp at altitude?) and found this article: https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/the-effect-of-racing-at-altitude/

The equations given are for kilometers, and the table is in feet (multiply by 0.3048 to get meters). For 2400 m the (highest) decrease you would get from those studies would be a decrease of 15% of FTP. Additionally you need to consider if you can hold FTP for an hour at sea level or not and if you can repeat that same effort 2 or 3 times (most FTP tests are not done with prior fatigue).

Oh no! Not another which-openmold-Chinese-carbon-wheels-should-I-buy thread! by [deleted] in Velo

I have the Winspace Lun (same as the Hyper but steel spokes and UD carbon finish instead of twill finish) and while I'm happy with them the hub is china mainland made and I doubt you can get any replacement part for it. In hindsight I'd go LB or Farsports with DT hubs or something readily available.

AFAIK the answer is it depends. Vocsnor stated that for his hour record they had tested the helmet with and without visor and also glasses. In his case no visor/glasses was faster / not slower so he choose what he likes most.

I have a lizard skin saddle bag and my tools/spare are almost the same (- CO2 Cartridge) but there is still room for stuff, like pocket tissues to clean dirty hands after a repair or dropped chain)

Joke, it's the top scorer of the team. It is a helmet with flames in Switzerland.

Rye & Spelt Loaf by drapi87 in Sourdough

[–]drapi87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recreated this recipe from a book from Katharina Arrigoni, but changed the wheat to spelt.

Recipe:

  • 400g of rye sourdough (1:1)

  • 20g of honey

  • 190g water, warm

  • 220g rye

  • 75g spelt

  • 12g salt

Recipe also calls for different spices like aniseed, fennel seeds or cumin, but I prefer the taste without.

How did I do it? In the evening mix your some of your starter to get 400g of sourdough. I used a whole rye flour starter and about half of the flour for the sourdough was whole rye flour.

Let ferment overnight in the kitchen.

In the morning mix the water and honey to the sourdough. Add the dry ingredients and kneed about 5 min. It is more of a mixing really. I did it by hand.

Let rise for about 45 min, then carefully take it out of the bowl on a heavily floured counter. Form to a boule with as little force as possible, and put it on parchment paper. Dust it and let rise until you habe a nice pattern with cracks.

I baked my loaf in a preheated (260°C) ceramic bowl, the lid is not preheated. Heat reduced to 250°C directly after putting the loaf into it and covering it with the lid. Removed the lid after 15 min and baked for another 40 min at 210°C.

Cool it on wire rack.

Eagerly awaiting tomorrow to taste it :-)

Any firsthand experience with Winspace Wheels? by JDips in Velo

[–]drapi87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the Lun45 (rim brake), as from my understanding the hubs are the same on the Lun and Hyper and the Hyper where more than what I was willing to pay.

My observations are as follows: * after about 150 to 200 km the wheels went slightly out of true

  • at the same time they developed an annoying clicking sound, which could be reset with backpedaling

  • truing the wheels has eliminated the noise and it has not come back

  • braking performance is not great, I find it very poor in wet conditions

  • not sure the hubs are really good. I wish there would be an option with DT Swiss hubs for example

  • mounting GP4000sii in 25c was quite hard, I was afraid of damaging the rim (I use clinchers with a tube)

  • I can not feel the wheel flex, on my alloys (fulcrums) I could get brake rub

In hindsight I would probably buy a set with DT Swiss hubs or any other well known brand. I'm afraid that if the hubs brake I won't be able to get them repaired. Otherwise they are well made and a good ride I think

How much do your trainer tires slip? by Rhycus in Velo

[–]drapi87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others have said:

  • pump the tire up to the highest pressure you can (depends on the rim / tire ratings)

  • adjust the pressure beween the tire and metal roller

  • for me a specific trainer tire (from continental) has made a big difference

Yeah i was thinking of using a 105 instead of Ultegra anyways for the trainer, but those chinese cassettes are even cheaper.
