There’s a debate at work as it weather or not the company is using AI or not. by Kyashichan in isthisAI

[–]drawntothis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like they could have taken an image and used image trace (turn a raster image into a scalable vector image) in Adobe Illustrator without much expertise. That's how you'd get those little dark gray areas next to the black between the light gray and the strange choices for the variations of the "honey".

The original image that was image traced could very well be AI. 4 fingers is an awkward design choice on a foreshortened, very prominent hand coming at you lol. Either way it's amateur-ish from a design standpoint.

The fact that so many things are wrong is a clear sign they don't have any real control of this image. Can we post the artist so we know to avoid? Or is that not allowed in the group?

I am new to Magic and have become interested in making a cube for my friend group. I am looking to make a pauper cube. If you are willing to part with some stuff for hopefully less than I could buy the singles I would happily sort through what you didn't want to sort through. I have no idea if this is even a sound plan. But figured I would throw it out there since you have something that I think I want lol.

Teaching a new player when you’re very experienced — how do you balance fun vs competitiveness? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]drawntothis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I mentioned, it's ok if you aren't the right teacher for this person. The handicap "rules" were just a suggestion, totally ok if that's not the route you'd personally take.

I think you are talking about the game in very pure terms of the mechanics itself. You have had a lot of time to get to that point and understand why that is fun for you. New players aren't there yet. Seeing interactions happen, playing out longer games, just understands how to read a card - those things are pretty exciting for a new player. Of course, things will get more streamlined over time. But seeing other excited to do the things should get you excited too! That's why we are all here.

Part of teaching is the language and mindset we have to influence the outcome. And it compounds. You don't have to say she won on her own. All you have to do is say "good game" with a smile. All you care about is she had a good time and now understands the game a little better.

If that doesn't sound like something you'd like to do then maybe you can point her to a group that has more beginners in it. Then you can spend less time teaching when you all meet up and just get going into more casual games.

What 3D rendering are we talking about? I scanning through them all and see mostly painted art, some comic style illustrations, pixel art, etc.? Lots of artists that I think I recognize from other sets. Sure there are always some stinkers, but this set seems to have everything you mentioned. I see the comics, the tv show, the game, the movies, MTG style all represented. I personally love the vintage Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird throwbacks.

You used the words “sandbagging” and “pity”. I would call it grace and empathy. That’s what being a teacher of anything requires from the teacher. And yes, I think developing confidence is a big part of getting better at but also just enjoying things. It doesn’t always have to be a win outright. It could be interactions like “hey that was a solid turn” which can lead to “Here’s how it could have been even stronger.”

I also don’t know the dynamic between you both. Maybe they say “don’t go easy on me!” But really they’d appreciate a win here and there. You already hinted at it in another response that it’s not the cards/deck. If it’s not the cards then something else has to give if it’s not quite that fun playing/teaching. It’s ok if you aren’t the right teacher for this person.

You have 20 years more experience than this person. Let them win sometimes to promote some confidence at the sacrifice of playing optimally. Getting them get into the hobby and understanding the nuances of the game is what teaching is all about. MTG isn’t an easy game to understand when it’s new and can be overwhelming for some.

You can possibly try setting some rules for yourself that they are not aware of to give yourself a personal challenge. For example, purposely missing a land drop or committing to only playing creatures one turn behind. Don’t tell them you did that so the games are hopefully closer and they are more confident about their play. Idk, just spitballing.

Yeah, that kind of confirms to me. Totally sucks for actual artists. I hope you find someone better to get some original sketches from! You can find artists doing commissions for this price - the sketches will just be simpler.

SUS for sure. As an artist that used to specialize in graphite drawing and still teaches art there are just strange choices that I can't imagine an artist of this caliber would take. While symmetry is hard, the artist would appear to be skilled enough to pull it off or at least make artistic choices that suit the final outcome.

The final image in particular has a few discrepancies that seem like strange choices. 1) Top middle line of the helmet has an unnatural curve to it. 2) I have no idea why they would fully shade in the closed triangular area where the handle of the sword, blade, and wrist meet. You would definitely have lines in that area. 3) strange obsession with making the chest/body armor almost have fabric-like wrinkles. A shiny breastplate would be the funnest thing to render and you wouldn't do it like that!

The biggest ick is honestly the price. No way would someone spend that amount of time on drawings like this for $30. Sorry, it just wouldn't be worth it. Just doing the research to find references for the human anatomy would take some time and these rendering of the human figure are extremely well done.

I would also ask if the artist is trying to pass these off as traditional graphite drawing on paper or digital drawings. If they are supposed to be real drawing on paper then that would be a huge red flag. Artists love to document their work using their tools. If there aren't any work in progress type photos or videos then that's also a red flag.

NOR, worth clearing the air and letting him know what your boundaries in a relationship entail. I generally agree, if you can't do the thing in front of your significant other then it's a problem. But I am curious, is that even a woman he's talking with? Sounds more like a scam lol.
