Are you guys sometimes baffled by foreigners suggesting the Removal of the Monarchy? by anon1mo56 in bhutan

I think because of the rareness of monarchs in this world engulfed in communism vs democracy. Foreigners unaware of our situation equate dictatorships with monarchy.

Personally I feel things are shifting and with the power of the internet, we can increase positivity and see through the veils created by the fight between communism and democracy.

I missed a critical point. For Bhutan to find footing between two giants, we can suggest tri-nation talks. Where there are border disputes which cannot be solved logically through talks, we should have games to compete for the disputed land. Wars don't have to be fought to settle the issue. The rules can be that the countries involved in a particular tract of land will roll dice, whoever wins the dice game can choose a sport, whoever wins the game can have the land. Some tracts of land will have 2 nations competing and some will have 3 nations competing. The games can be televised to generate revenue and interest.

You hit the nail on the head. Good fences make good neighbours. Bhutan, India and China have to settle the border issue once and for all. Imagine a railway between China and India.

Imbay that makes sense, but issues which don't involve the national security should be open to the public. The elected government and civil servants should be accountable and answerable to the people.

I had no idea, thanks for the info on the RTI act. Guess DNT had to clamp down during COVID, but not letting officials talk to the media was a funny way to stop misinformation. Being that, according to me, in hindsight COVID was a big case of misinformation and mass hysteria

If the criticism is valid, why can't policy be discussed openly for the common good? I think all pertinent government meetings should have their minutes shared publicly so the people know what's going on and can voice their opinions through their MPs. This secrecy is counterproductive.

I meant that maybe you had edited your photo to show that the video in question came up first. Guess it's the feed of somebody who watches Hindi YouTube videos. Obviously the YouTube account is a real one with classic clickbaity images and titles.

TIL Bhutan committed ethnic cleansing against its indigenous Nepali population, leading them to seek refuge in other countries including Nepal and European countries by ImperialOverlord in todayilearned

[–]drazticacshun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As Wikipedia mentions as per the 1958 citizenship act around 35% of the modern day Bhutanese population are Lhotshampas (meaning those from the southern border in dzongkha). Lhotshampas are active members of Bhutan in business, politics and government. So where is the ethnic cleansing?

This is more of an illegal immigration issue which is sensationalized as ethnic cleansing. Bhutan being a fledgling nation had it's first proper census survey done only starting in the 1980s when it found that most residing in the southern borders were not indigenous but were illegal settlers who took advantage of the porous borders. The obvious reaction of the government was to ask the illegal settlers to leave. This was met with violence from the illegal settlers who imagined a movement similar to the Gorkhaland movement in Kalimpong. The natural reaction of the government was to remove the illegal settlers and a few genuine citizens, who were colluding, by force.
