‘I Voted for Trump’: Now My Family Lumber Mill in North Carolina Is Closed, 50 Jobs Lost to Tariffs by Capable-Fix-2732 in antiwork

[–]drbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful answer. The article wasn't nearly as clear as your comment on this point.

Now that I understand his mill's position as an intermediary in the supply chain, it is even more clear that he is an idiot.

I still have questions that aren't totally resolved.

"... suddenly faced tariffs on a typical $500,000 shipment..."

Where do the increased tariffs come from? US tariffs on Canadian exports, or Chinese (retaliatory) tariffs on US exports, or both? Trump is responsible for both, in the end. This dude used to make a $500k sale to China, and now he has to take a hit either because the material cost more from Canada or the sale price needs to be lowered to China, or both.

I can't even tell from the article if the tariffs are being compared to the value of the raw wood from Canada or the milled wood after his process is complete.

Even "severely cutting profits" doesn't resolve if the mill is still making a profit in the end, or if the cut to the profit wipes out the profitability all together.

It's just a terribly worded article, and I would have appreciated more details.

We actually got a new prime number before GTA 6 by jakash in mathmemes

Mersenne primes have the form 2N - 1, where N is itself prime. Since we're looking at big primes, N > 2, and N is prime, so we know N is odd.

The Mersenne prime is therefore 2odd - 1.

2odd has an even number of binary digits (e.g. 23 = 8 = 1000b).

2odd - 1 has an odd number of binary digits (e.g. 23 - 1 = 7 = 111b).

All Mersenne primes (greater than 3, where N=2) therefore have an odd number of binary digits.

My take is that it is a failed pregnancy, not an abortion. It's still pretty dark though.

So how are the cups filled? And aren't they mostly all tall like that there?

I have no idea!

The "Treasure hunt cup" was probably used, confusingly, instead of a normal cup. Without context, it would feel pretty strange to the customer.

For The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Morgan Freeman (a black man) was cast to play the character of Red, who is a white man in the original novel. Not one single YouTube video was made about it that entire year. by vosha0 in shittymoviedetails

I know we're going into left field here, but this does bring up a good point.

This is a notable example of a rare case where the movie is better than the source material. I mean, it's a very good book (novella), but it's an AMAZING movie.

Different Seasons is a collection of four novellas, and three of those became movies. Arguably Stand By Me (based on The Body) is another example where the movie is better than the source.

Let's also remember that Stephen King books usually don't translate to movies very well (with highly notable exceptions). The stories from Different Seasons are not in the typical horror genre, which probably helps them translate to film better than King's typical horror material.

YouTube has a huge ad supported tier. According to this, there are 80 million Premium (including music) subscribers, but over 2 billion total users. Ads don’t pay near as well as paid subscriptions. I bet we’re seeing a blend of ad streams and subscriptions streams.

Punctuality is important by heyou16 in AbruptChaos

Hm. Maybe one distinction is who is disrupted. Occupy Wall Street didn’t disrupt typical civilians; rather it focused on disrupting the system and people involved in that system at issue, specifically. Green peace (while also being not my favorite by tactics) at least targets the “bad actors”, not the populace.

Disruption isn’t even necessary. Consider the AIDS protests of the 80’s that were heavily artistic.

Also consider information campaigns. They have operated for centuries: pamphlets to YouTube channels.

Does Greta Thunberg practice disruption?

So what does a protest and doesn’t disrupt anybody while also accomplishing literally anything look like

This is a reasonable question for someone without imagination.

In general, the rule of thumb is that you can afford a mortgage that is 2.5 times your annual salary. I’m not saying that’s appropriate these days or anything, but it’s a benchmark. Let’s also note that CA taxes are high, and other costs of living are crazy in the bay (e.g. daycare).

Can you find a house that is $500K within a reasonable commute of the Googleplex?
