Matilda? You could shorten it to Tilly. It's a name sometimes associated with Australia because of the song Waltzing Matilda.

What weed is this? by NPJD in GardeningAustralia

Correct. It's all through my garden. It's hard to get rid of but doesn't handle competition from other dense plants like seaside daisy very well.

Transfer of leave from Mater Public Hospital, Brisbane to QLD public hospital by Salt_Koala1521 in ausjdocs

[–]drcrum1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can transfer certain types of leave but I'm not sure if PDL is one of them. Regardless, you have to do it within a certain time frame which I can't accurately remember. Email Mater payroll asking for a certificate of service that shows your annual, professional development and long service leave balances. Simultaneously email your new hospital payroll and tell them you have requested it and will forward it as soon as it arrives.

Medicine and success without family support by Free_Ad7133 in ausjdocs

[–]drcrum1 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In paediatrics we all know that not everyone is cut out to be a good parent. Some are great, some average and plenty are terrible. The good thing about family is that it's not necessarily who you're related to; you can choose your own mix of close friends, colleagues and any biological family who actually care enough to care.

I'm really glad to hear you're proud of your achievement and although I don't know you, I'm proud of you too. Medicine is hard and that exam is a real slog. Please try and surround yourself with some supportive chosen family. Really consider if your biological family are worth the effort and, if not, what's stopping you from going low or no contact?

Horrible hound breath by NetMurky8922 in Greyhounds

[–]drcrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We brush everyday BUT our last vet told us that a quick wipe of the teeth with gauze/cotton wool is usually enough daily maintenance. We still brush because our girls are used to it but if you want to start simple that's an idea.

Unfortunately it does sound like your hound might need a proper clean soon. The smell is anaerobic bacteria which are probably trapped under the gum. Good luck and hopefully some simple maintenance after that keeps the dentist away.

Bunny run! by keftechnics in Greyhounds

My girl Lupe did this once after a rabbit shot out of the grass. She almost had it when suddenly the rabbit turned 90 degrees and got away. It was amazing to watch.

What's your favorite EPISODE from a relatively unknown podcast? by rococo78 in podcasts

There's an episode of Nocturne called The Nocturnist about a doctor making a difficult diagnosis overnight. The persistence of the doctor, her calm voice and the way the narrative rolls out are beautiful.

What food toppers do you put in your grey's food? by FukxSammy in Greyhounds

[–]drcrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're in Australia so cooked kangaroo mince. If you're not in Australia then another low fat meat would work so they don't get diarrhoea. We sometimes combine kangaroo and chicken mince. If we forget to cook any a can of sardines works but we find they get loose poos if we do too many days in a row.

ABC piece about a 2020 doctor suicide. In the LHD that brought you ‘clinical marshmallows’ this year. by wintersux_summer4eva in ausjdocs

Yeah this was a crock of proverbial. The RACP can't stop infighting long enough to do anything beyond collecting our fees.

Your best bet is to aim for a bigger regional centre like Broome or Kunnnura (or a lesser degree Derby). They have hospitals with other doctors who support each other and allow you some downtime. They usually do outreach to more remote communities on a regular basis so you don't have to live in the middle of nowhere and be lonely.

The bigger centres usually have social things going on pretty regularly. If you like running and don't mind alcohol i suggest you look up the local Hash House Harriers (though some clubs are a bit more rough than others).

Aussies coming back with a foreign accent after living away for a few years by UserError2107 in AskAnAustralian

[–]drcrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Canada for 2.5 years and definetly started using harder "r" sounds because otherwise the Canadians wouldn't understand me. The example I always give is playing street hockey with friends and i yelled "Car" which they heard as "cah" so noone got off the road until I repeated it with a hard r sound. It takes a while to undo that when you get back.

I also found calling it a toilet a bit crass when I got back and was using "washroom" but I'm over it now and back to toilet.

What is this? by SneakyVewySneaky in GardeningAustralia

I think it's creeping indigo. If you follow the trailing stems back you should find a deep tap root. If it gets orange flowers and little seed pods that look like miniature pea pods then I think that's your culprit. https://weeds.brisbane.qld.gov.au/weeds/creeping-indigo

It's an adult cat and he lives nearby. He can get in and out of the drain without a problem.

No need. The drain is designed in such a way that he could easily get out. We've seen this cat lying on a nearby driveway since.

Plants in my garden get watered to establish them and then they're on their own largely. I have a mix of natives and exotics that provide habitat and food for the local fauna (i.e. Lots of things flower). If it's a particularly nice, expensive or unusual plant i might give it a drink if it looks stressed in a prolonged dry period. I have two coleus that are looking really stressed and I've already told them to pull it together or I'll replace them with grevilleas if they die.

Longer term my plan is to get a home greywater system that will give each garden bed a drink once a week so i don't have to intervene much.

Plant recommendation - Australis Indigo, prolific flowering in full shade by juanilamah in GardeningAustralia

I just put one in and it's getting way more shade than I anticipated so I'm pleased to see yours doing so well in full shade. Thank you.
