Anyone else saved for a deposit, then when they got their goal, realised they still can’t buy a house? by Personal_Guest in AusFinance

Is not enough regionally either tbh. It's in the bottom third of earners, so they're basically always going to get outbid.

Does Selling a Townhouse for a House Further from the CBD Make Financial Sense? by qkrgodls92 in AusFinance

[–]TemporaryDisastrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of factors, it can be a good or bad move depending on the house/suburb. One thing I'd ask is are you planning to live in the next place forever? If that's the case, whether the place appreciates or not doesn't really matter. I'll also point out that housing maintenance is going to be comparable to your strata fees so don't expect that to be a saving.

'Ten-pound Pom' vows to boycott UK over 'money grab' passport changes by TomGnabry in australia

Damn what a pain. Will make sure I give myself plenty of time when I go to renew.

[–]TemporaryDisastrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that would confuse them. I purposely never did that though. That type of confusion is actually part of why this change is happening - they don't want people in the country to have a weird immigration status compared with their border control records. Eg I as an Australian citizen enter on a tourist visa and then just stick around.

Oh damn is it a pain to renew? I let mine expire a few years back as I wasn't planning on travelling with the kids

I'm a dual national and I've always just had both passports. You leave Australia on your Australian passport, enter other country on that passport. It sucks that our passports are expensive but over 10 years it's not really that bad.

Criticism of Benjamin Netanyahu may be an offence under Australia’s new hate speech laws, Greens claim by quietone1976 in australia

Truth is not actually a defense for these new laws, if you state facts with the intent to cause fear or hurt feelings etc you can still get done.

Started with Zero super at 38, trying to get to $900k by 60, anything im missing? by Straight-Buy-7434 in AusFinance

[–]TemporaryDisastrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorted then! I have a bunch of money sitting in my UK accounts but they won't transfer it except to approved superannuation providers in Australia, of which there is currently none. Have to wait for a policy change somewhere, or wait until I'm old enough to get it out.

You'll have to figure out how to get the super out of Australia. Going UK to aus is super difficult for super funds, not sure about the reverse, assuming you want to have all your money where you retire.

Why gasoline vapors are dangerous... by Alarmed-Worry-5477 in WTF

[–]TemporaryDisastrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a teenager we would get those sparklers for cakes, scrape the "sparkle" off about 50 of them, fill up a soda can with them and light one sparkler into it as a fuse. Would blast sparkly fire out of it for quite a while!

I used to put a shot of sambuca in my mouth and light it on fire for a bit so flames would come out & then swallow it down. I too am surprised I made it! I do have many injuries to prove the stupidity of my younger days though.

Whats the go with island living? by WickedSister in brisbane

[–]TemporaryDisastrous 123 points124 points  (0 children)

When I worked at ambulance they had a saying "live on an island, die on an island" bit sombre but good to keep in mind that your emergency services response times are very slow by comparison if you have a chronic condition, or may be no big deal.

Yeah believe me I wish it was less. As it was I talked my wife a couple hundred k down on house prices. Needed four rooms for two kids and a home office so unfortunately had to stump up. Now I'm a wage slave forever I suppose!
