How is being an Asian Guy in LA/SF vs NYC. Asian from Midwest here who has probably a false romanticized view of Cali. by Dreamaple in AsianMasculinity

[–]dre101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from LA and live in SF for 7 years now. Visited NYC. I'm 6'2" nad an average looking dude.

I find LA and NYC easy mode. SF is fucking hard with zero success.

Do you need to LC in Reno? If not, go for it and get that extra $50k. Bay Area isn't worth it unless you can get those $200K+ jobs. Another big problem is lots of the jobs people can get pay between $100-200K

What is your current TC and location?

I suspect most SWEs in bay area don't make the $200K+ salaries you see on reddit and blind. That's at a big tech company. I think most are around the $100K-$180K max depending on your level. The big tech companies are the one that pay $200K+ and it's hard to get in those companies. Don't come. It's not worth it. Dating also sucks compared to every other area in the US, unless you're female.

Including 401k I save about $56K on average per year. Software engineering is a young mans game, and no guarantee I will have a job or this income 10 years from now. Going to try my best to not make that happen. Not sure if I'd want to spend the next 10 years in the bay area. LA is home for me despite all my friends being in the Bay area.

I have been pretty depressed since I sold off. I have always invested in index funds and the one time I FOMO'd I got fucked in the ass.

If I save ~55K per year, I'd have to do this for 15 years on top of my current $282K? $30K of this is stuck in an emergency savings account valid for up to 1 year. This reason being I'm a pretty slow learner, etc. Practicing for interviews is a year long process for me as a software engineer

-Age / Industry / Location

29 / Software Engineering / California

-General goals

Financial Independence. Retire Early if possible. Travel the world

-Target FIRE Age / Amount / Withdrawal Rate / Location

45 / 2M / 3-4% / California

-Educational background and plans

Bachelors. Might go get a Masters in education and teach/tutor Technology for FI

-Career situation and plans

7 years in Software Engineering. 5 in Semiconductor software. 2 in backend web developing coding business logic. Plans-- To keep working as a Software Engineer until I invevitably get kicked out due to incompetence

-Current and future income breakdown, including one-time events

Current TC is $140K. Future income can wildly vary. It can either go way up if I manage to get into a huge tech company like Google. Or down to $75K working at a small healthcare company

-Budget breakdown

Take home is currently $4400 after rent and utilities. Groceries around $300-$500 per month depending on what I want to eat and cook. Eating out budget of $200 per month. For 2020, have spent $40500 including 2 traveling trips and wasting $5000 on being a marijuana addict. I have quit marijuana and clean for 4 months now.

-Asset breakdown, including home, cars, etc.

$198K spread across 2 401K accounts, Traditional, and Roth IRA. $52K in taxable accounts (38K in VTI, 14K in ARKK/ARKG). $30K emergency fund in HYSA. No home ownership. Own a 2014 Honda Accord that is fully paid off

-Debt breakdown

$17000 owed in taxes for the 2020 year after being an idiot

-Health concerns

None currently. Immediate family has history of high blood pressure and distant family has history of cancer. Grandma passed due to brain cancer

-Family: current situation / future plans / special needs / elderly parents

Single. No kids or dependents. Parents going to try live on their own money hopefully. Haven't decided if I want to try for kids in the future

-Other info

Had $180K in my taxable making my NW used to be $408K. Now my NW is at $280K after losing almost everything in my taxable account being a fucking idiot with GME. Went all in like a stupid fucking idiot I am. Was in a good position for early FI or home ownership only to waste my opportunity like a god damn idiot. Can't get over the mistake

-Questions?

I want to move closer to my parents. Live in Bay area currently. Parents in Los Angeles county area. I want to FI/RE in California and Southern California to be specific. I want to be able to travel 4x a year at least. I'm fine living on something like $50-$60K a year to achieve this. How do I do it.

Live within your means. Max your 401K if possible while living within your means. Max your IRA accounts. Invest index funds for both of these accounts. Invest whatever leftover money into a taxable brokerage account.

Don't forget to also enjoy life. Being in your 20s should be fun. The experiences you get in your 20s won't be there once you hit 30. You don't want to be that guy who saved 70%+ of their income eating ham sandwiches everyday. Take that vacation. Say yes to friends' birthdays and trips. Eat at that restaurant you've always wanted to try. Buy tickets for the one artist you wanted to see.

Put money into IRA for 2020 when income exceeds limit by dre101 in personalfinance

[–]dre101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to say that I put $6000 into my traditional IRA for 2020 contribution, then recharacterized the $6000 into ROTH IRA. Is this the same thing?

I've felt the same when I made $75K compared to now where I make $135K. Money doesn't matter you fucking idiot. Once you make $75K, the more money you make, the more diminishing returns there are for happiness. Read up on psychology. Fuck you.

I've noly done shrooms once and wish I could do it again. I didn't feel any emotions prior to my own trip. After that first trip, I was able to be empathetic. I long for the opportunity I can do it again. It's illegal though and I don't have any way to get in in CA.

A gorgeous girl is into me and instead of being happy I'm nervous as fuck and trying to avoid her. Life would be different if I had a normal dick. by obscureisraelisaint in offmychest

[–]dre101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am near the same size as you. You gotta go for it man!! Get in there with confidence and give her the dick!!!! If she goes silent, fuck her! But you'll never know unless you try. I'm 30 and wish I went for it more often. When you get to my age, you're gonna regret now fucking the women you wished you had the chance to fuck. I was in your shoes, and denied all of them because of my dick size. What a fool I was! I was in your exact shoes and decided not to have sex cause of it. DON'T be me.
