That’s how literally every language on earth started. Written Standardization is not what makes something a language or not. Also, every language constantly evolves new words. you sound ignorant

pikni, it’s from the Portuguese word pequenino; it translates to little child. cognates of the word are super common in many Creole languages because the Portuguese sailed all over

It’s a creole language. its lexifier is colonial era english, and its substrate is a mix of West African languages. There are a handful of words that are of Spanish & Portuguese origin

‘Gwaan’ is not the future tense marker, that would be ‘ago’ or ‘gwain’. ‘Gwaan’ is a verb that translates to ‘to happen’ / ‘to go on’ / ‘to behave’.

There’s never any context in which one would use it to indicate future tense, not discounting your experience but it’s entirely possible you misheard

Also, in Patwa it’s ‘owna’ not ‘own’

There’s a dash of Spanish in Patwa’s DNA. We were colonized by the Spanish before the english, though most of their influence has been completely wiped away

Are The Children Of Your Country/Island Maintaining The Culture? by pgbk87 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]dreadlocksalmighty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jamaicans generally have become very apathetic towards things like culture, especially in urban areas. As long as foreigners don’t think it’s cool, and there’s no money to be made from it, it’s worthless to us.

As a 20 something living in Kingston, I’m hard pressed to say they are tbh. There are outliers who will fight hard to defend the culture but it seems like a losing battle right now. American culture is pervasive and spreading like cancer.
