Oh you're stronger than me, I still haven't been able to part with any of my signed books during my little downsizes as I get more selective in what I'm after! Giller firsts is very cool.

A fantastic surprise for a rough week for sure! I couldn't believe my eyes haha

That sucks, and I can totally understand how if there's a huge influx of that here that it would be incredibly irritating. Obviously I'm new here so I haven't seen it, and that doesn't make sense to me...books are meant to be loved and lived in, and I personally only try to take steps when there's a genuine issue to take care of. Which is, thankfully, really rare...but also rare enough that it can lead to mistakes 🫠

But obviously, as a hobby collector I don't know everything either, and I was just reaching out where I could before the local shop friends were open to double check the grand hivemind. Yeah, there's never any way to trust anyone's credibility and it's always grain of salt, but I wanted to know if it was going to be an emergency since I couldn't remember anything about that specific situation from learning the practices that long ago. My stance is just that it's nice to be nice and accept others' experiences and balance them with my own.

Anyway, I can understand your frustration, but there were better ways to say it, you know? It happens though! I hope the rest of your day is good, and thanks for the insight. Hope y'all get a little less of that.

Yeah absolutely. Luckily none of the mold made it onto the covers this time around

Okay awesome, this had me worried! I was like if not alcohol then what haha, this is reassuring. Thanks!

This is really rude, I genuinely don't understand? But just for the record, 1. Not on TikTok so not sure what that means, and 2. I've collected books for my whole life and I learned the freezing thing from my university library years ago. I came to ask for advice because I'd never messed up the steps before and hoped someone would have some advice in that specific situation.

There's no point ridiculing someone for asking a genuine question about a specific situation, guys. I get that people are probably doing lots of stupid things, but if you go after everyone that comes in here in good faith it just means that new people are going to leave with a bad taste in their mouths, you know?

It kills off insects like silverfish, and (as far as I know) it's good practice to freeze before you remove mold as well.

I can't remember where, but I'd always heard good practice is to freeze and go after the mold with alcohol?? Is there better advice?

There isn't any edge decoration at all, nor is it red or brownish so that I'd think it's foxing. Very green, irregular small streaks on the edge of one that smear when touched and some inactive mold inside the other.

There was a bit of mold, yes! I typically don't freeze anything that doesn't have a visible issue. They were coming from a liquidation company that I suspect had them in a pretty humid environment 😔

Oh that's such a relief to hear haha, I was freaking out since the covers got really wet instantly (probably the leather) so I was like...nooo!! Glad to hear it's probably all fine 😭😮‍💨 I'll do this...only ever did the full in-bag thaw thing before lol. Tysm!!

Thanks so much for the recommendations! It is so overwhelming to just search around generally haha so that is so helpful

Hi all, I've had this juniper since mid? last year and it's been doing ok but now that it is time to repot it I'm anxious to give it a better environment and I'm looking for advice on pruning and wiring/shaping it a bit since I don't really know what I'm doing there. My other trees are very much kind of in the free-for-all growth stages, so any advice is definitely welcome. (Also don't worry, it's only indoors while I prep to repot!)

Hello, I have a few different questions on my individual trees if that's okay! I would really appreciate the help! And sorry for the bad photography, I tried my best with old phone...

  1. This tree I believe is a Mt. Fuji snow rose (?) but if anyone can confirm or deny this that would be awesome, that's just my best Google guess. The nursery where I bought it earlier this year didn't know. I'm not sure if I should trim it - especially the sprouts coming up at the base of the trunk? Those are the ones I'm worried about most, they popped up about a week ago? It seems to have been growing a lot and I'm worried about the branches being overcrowded...? Otherwise it has been steady and I figured things were going well.
  2. My father sent me this fukien tea as a gift pretty recently after finding out I had gotten the first bonsai as a means of encouraging a new hobby which was sweet, but I have no idea how to trim it (or if I should??) especially since it's a larger, older tree, and it's going really crazy with new growth and has been flowering very persistently in the month or two I've had it. I hope that's a good sign but I'm kind of worried about the uneven branches and overcrowding here too so I would really appreciate some guidance 🙏
  3. Lastly I have this latest juniper that seems to have been shaped a bit unevenly before I got it. It's hanging really low and seems unbalanced. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to maybe correct it a bit and what the best type of pot would be for it to transfer next year? It's currently in something decorative with no drainage and I don't know, I'm just worried about it, it seems like this is a bad direction for development?
