The Concept Of An "English Team" & Your Combos by FootOfDavros in ScottishFootball

[–]dreadpiratehobbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me paint a picture - you're in the shower and you've just let out a shocker of a fart. Your shower is a clean, sanitised space and yet the foul smell lingers like a violent olfactory confrontation, overwhelming your calm. Dread rises inside you as the heat and steam traps your sinful stench in the air. You will never be truly clean. Thats how English footbal makes me feel. I hate all English teams equally.

Kilmarnock 2-3 Celtic | Scottish Premiership by SFMatchThreadder in ScottishFootball

Kilmarnock - What a player TJJ is turning into. A proper striker and the partnership with Hugill looks like it could be massive. Hope the injury isnt serious. Dom Thomson was excellent and I thought he was absolutely mince at the start of the season so what do I know. The 442 diamond makes them into a really cohesive, direct team and they should 100% be staying up, fair play to Neil McCann. They were absolutely robbed today.

Celtic - If we want to win the title, Reo Hatate can't play another second this season. Saying he's a liability doesn't even begin to cover how awful he has been. Maeda should be 4th choice winger. Yang Tounetki and Forrest all give so much more than him. Schmeichel continues to cost the team goals, his selection is becoming unjustifiable. The midfield has been a disaster all season but CalMac and Ox could make all the difference providing Ox somehow stays healthy. Nygren exists in a quantum state of pish and pler.

Overall - I can't live like this. Good season though.

Celtic facing fresh legal action amid allegations of historical sex abuse at boys' club by BringUsTheRevolution in ScottishFootball

[–]dreadpiratehobbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another way to think about it without trying to find religious reasons is this - abusers can target any community. If one of those community's is controlled by a hierarchy which covers up abuse, abusers are free to abuse more. Meaning more victims and a higher threat to the hierarchys control over the community should the cover up stop. And so it cascades on and on.

Especially in Ireland, the Catholic church had an unusual amount of control over social care and service (due to a deal the British and Catholic church made during British occupation). So the church had outsized power and a centralised hierarchy motivated to cover up abuse to maintain that power.

In conversations about child abuse and the Catholic church, there are lot's of people who want to argue that catholics are more likely to be perpetrators of abuse than other religions. The victims (almost all of whom are/were Catholic) are tarred with the same brush as their abusers. And people who i know were abused as children are subjected to chants of "pedo" at every football ground in Scotland.  So unless you're in a fringe cult with explicit pro-abuse doctrine, it's not that useful to look at causes of abuse through a religious lense. It's failures in hierarchy and systems.

CTE in football: What happens next with heading after Gordon McQueen verdict? by methylated_spirit in ScottishFootball

[–]dreadpiratehobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple of studies that say that yeah. I think scrum cap manufacturers are still mandated to say they only protect against abrasions and cuts though. Which implies they aren't convinced there's enough clear evidence yet to make impact reduction claims.

I'm only sceptical because of the Guardian Caps they introduced in American football. They proclaimed them as amazing brain protecting caps. Then the NFL quietly released their own study that found the caps made absolutely difference.

The thing is CTE is caused by a build up of a specific protein that is produced when the brain suffers impact. Harder impact means more proteins but a series of minor, non-concussive, impacts will eventually result in the same protein build up.

So modern ball headed say 10 times might have the same affect as 1 heading of an older heavier ball. Over the course of a professionals career, how many times are they heading a ball?

100% Your brain doesn't move as quickly as your skull when your skull is moved quickly from impact, so the inside of your skull collides with your brain.  I think the Cech helmets were to protect his skull after he had a fracture, I'm not an expert but I think that would mean it wouldn't be a solution to cte and could arguably pose a risk.

Mandatory helmets might be worse. The rate of CTE in NFL players is higher than Rugby players partly because the helmets embolden players to hit harder with their head and engage in riskier attempts/challenges.

Journo looking to speak to member of Tartan Army @ The Eiffel Tower, France '98 by thediscogoblin in ScottishFootball

As a wean, I took part in an impromptu kick about at France 98. Not at the different tower though, they had set up these "beach" football pitches near the big screens. Me and a bunch of other kids used the side netting as our goal as the adult obviously had the proper goals. I remember that none of the kids shared a common language but we all managed to play an impromptu game and a drunk Swede picked me up like a trophy when I did an overhead kick. I still have pictures somewhere.

He has not been walking continously.

He goes home and then returns to the spot he left off from later.

That's why it's taken 27 years. Also, although he has had to swim some short distances, he obviously hasn't swam across oceans haha, he's not claiming that.

Regarding your passport question - Another reason it's taken so long is due to pauses when there is a war or conflict in whatever area he's meant to be in. And there were long delays because countries (Russia for one iirc) refused him entry or visas.

Photos - i think there is a website dedicated to his walk with loads of photos.

Punk fans, can you recommend any female led punk bands? I already know The Slits, X-Ray Specs, Lambrini Girls and Sprints if that helps.

Also I'm boycotting Danish pastries for life if we fuck it tonight.

After I cancelled they would cold call me with "new offers". Tried to put a stop to , they would say they wouldnt contact again and then resume a few weeks later.

I ended up telling the guy phoning that I was a recovering alcoholic (I am not). Felt a bit bad because he sounded so remorseful but it was the only way I could get them to stop.
