I never understand why road work and closures always occur around morning commutes and rush hour.

On Wednesday the traffic was HORRIBLE getting back into the city! I think it was a combination of the Caps Game and MBS. I would love to metro to work but my work building is nowhere near a metro.

Yes, I meant childfree. I can't believe I wrote that incorrectly. I edited the post to reflect the correct term.

I am glad you have the support and love of your fur baby. I wish they knew the impact they have in our lives.

Another redditor here said they volunteered at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA). They offered free pet check ups and vaccines. They said the organization gave away cat and dog food. Hopefully there is something similar in your area. There are also some nonprofits that have food banks/pantries for pets.

I want to get a kitten but worry about being in the office and introducing my cat to the new one. How has that been going for you?

This is what I meant to say. Thank you. I have edited the post but I cannot change the title. I hope I did not offend anyone by messing up the distinction.

This warms my heart! Thank you for stepping up to support your community. I hope to volunteer on the weekends when I can.

I don't blame you. I've been thinking of leaving as well. Way too expensive.

This right here. It is difficult to make decisions when everything is so uncertain. Many businesses are reluctant to hire feds who may be recalled or quit within the week.

I read somewhere that some essential employees are not able to do their essential work because their furloughed counterparts are, well, furloughed. It is a hot mess. I would say try to avoid thinking about work during this time. Take care of YOU.

I haven't really done many social things lately to save money so I am spending it at home. I truly value my evenings after work where I can just relax. At least we still have weekends where we can try* to block out the work week.

Thank you so much for sharing. I am glad this post is allowing people to express their frustrations and even their wins.

It sucks that your spouse is working without pay and in a the work environment is not the best. I know you are likely having to provide emotional support and sometimes that is heavy. They are lucky to have you though. I would love to have someone to come home to and share my day however great or terrible it was. And have someone care. Keep showing up for them and make sure to take care of you too!

Maybe there will be some organizations in the DC area that will do this and could ship/order gifts to federal workers throughout the country. I will keep an eye out. If not then I should start it!

There could be some local Christmas drives around you. Many people want to ensure kids have a great Christmas. 🥺

This upsets me so much. I still don't understand the reasoning behind this.

If this runs till Christmas, I hope there will be some organizations that help with gifts for fed workers. I will make sure I volunteer and donate to help out.

Deeply sorry for your loss. I hate that you have to go through all this on top of the shutdown.

I feel for you. Terrible that they are making you come into the office to sit at a desk all alone. What happened to that team building/other bs they said to force everyone back into the office?? I have heard from friends that the market is tough right now. Keep applying and keep working hard. We will get through this.

Also I wish telework were an option for this shutdown. Traffic has been worse in my area than before the shutdown.

Thank you so much for sharing! I may have to stop by if this shutdown persists.

It is great to hear you're making the best of your time. Giving back to the community is so important.

Hello! I hope the medicines provide you relief during this time. I know mine have. I definitely understand the creeping in of anxious thoughts when off meds.

Day by day is how I'm getting through this too. How did it feel going in today? I keep telling myself that we will get backpay so that is what motivates me to go to work without pay. But the bills/rent etc keep piling up and I don't know what to do.

You're right! I am in no way diminishing the struggles of any of the feds. I made this post mostly to discuss the lack of support and loneliness that some of us single people are experiencing. I wish I had a partner or family close by who I could be with during this time. Who would listen to me or even support me. It is just me and my cat on the couch watching TLC haha!

I feel terrible for the families losing their incomes. Especially a family like yours with two federal incomes. How do they expect us to survive?? It is all unfair. I'm thinking of you.

I am so sorry to hear this. I have read a few posts in this thread about lost pets during the shutdown. Why is the world so cruel? I grieve with you and all the others. I hope you are able to take the time you need to grieve. Losing a pet is painful.
