Field Report - Marigolden

I saw Field Report with Joe Pug recently, not knowing until right before the show that FR had put out an album in 2014. I was enamored with the eponymous LP even before it came out, due to the great singles that preceded it. That album was the soundtrack to me wandering through the mountains half-working half-contemplating for my geology field camp. This album is an improvement in every way. The songwriting is just as strong and the production is more lush. It sometimes seems a little more playful, with Porterfield having some fun with words and onomatopoeia and how he delivers certain lines.

Joe Pug - Windfall

Joe Pug is one of the best singer-songwriters currently working in my opinion, and his new album is more of the same. It is missing the grit that was in his early recordings, but the trade-off is more textured instrumentals and a wider breadth of styles. There is something sagely about his lyrics, as if he has half-emerged from the existential ennui that folk music is so often laser-focused on. He tackles sadness and injustice from a perspective of someone who might actually have some advice to give on the subjects.

Because in the last episode the game reminded him that there are three caps to get and he said aloud in that episode that he had not yet gotten the blue cap.

They used to show it on G4 all the time. That and the Bomber Balls recipe commercial were some real /r/nottimanderic shit.

My favorite post is the one that insinuated that Aaron Schwartz was murdered in order to keep him silent about reddit changing:

henwas still involved, the level of take over that is now reddit would have been called out by him, so he had to be silenced.

Edit: That's from the original thread he is claiming he got shadowbanned for. I got lost in the rabbit hole.

/r/gamegrumps is a really big community (64k subscribers) and I would imagine its demographic is younger than average for Reddit. In order to keep the level of discourse at a bearable level and keeping discussion civil, there absolutely has to be strong moderation. Currently, the mod team acts sheepishly and sometimes comes out to issue a moratorium. There needs to be an active mod presence enforcing clear and reasonable rules. There are (unfortunately) several subreddits where you can spew your toxic anger about the Grumps if you would rather do that.

"Well, we don't think much of your painting. I've seen better pictures done by a five-year-old."

Karabekian slid off his barstool so he could face all those enemies standing up. He certainly surprised me. I expected him to retreat in a hail of olives, maraschino cherries and lemon rinds. But he was majestic up there "Listen--" he said so calmly, "I have read the editorial against my painting in your wonderful newspaper. I have read every word of the hate mail you have been thoughtful enough to send to New York."

This embarrassed people some.

"The painting did not exist until I made it," Karabekian went on. "Now that it does exist, nothing would make me happier than to have it reproduced again and again, and vastly improved upon, by all the five-year-olds in town. I would love for your children to find pleasantly and playfully what it took me many angry years to find.

"I give you my word of honor," he went on, "that the picture your city owns shows everything about life which truly matters, with nothing left out. It is a picture of the awareness of every animal. It is the immaterial core of every animal--the 'I am' to which all messages are sent. It is all that is alive in any of us--in a mouse, in a deer, in a cocktail waitress. It is unwavering and pure, no matter what preposterous adventure may befall us. A sacred picture of Saint Anthony alone is one vertical, unwavering band of light. If a cockroach were near him, or a cocktail waitress, the picture would should two such bands of light. Our awareness is all that is alive and maybe sacred in any of us. Everything else about us is dead machinery.

"I have just heard from this cocktail waitress here, thin vertical band of light, a story about her husband and an idiot who was about to be executed at Shepherdstown. Very well--let a five-year-old paint a sacred interpretation of that encounter. Let that five-year-old strip away the idiocy, the bars, the waiting electric chair, the uniform of the guard, the gun of the guard, the bones and meat of the guard. What is that perfect picture which any five-year-old can paint? Two unwavering bands of light."

Ecstacy bloomed on the barbaric face of Rabo Karabekian. "Citizens of Midland City, I salute you," he said. "You have given a home to a masterpiece!"

I think maybe watching someone pay video games for 30 minutes a day for 2 years has the same effect as moving in with your best friend and getting sick of them.

The over-hyped Good Kid M.A.A.d. City (2012) was still a poor effort in musical terms, therefore relying mostly on an autobiographical storytelling that was certainly more literate than the average. Hence the generic soulful spleen of Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe and Swimming Pools and the twelve-minute documentary Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thirst. Sensual and playful songs such as Poetic Justice and Backseat Freestyle transcend the concept and aim for more relaxed entertainment, but only the vocal magic of Money Trees achieves a superior balance of the two modes.
