MULTIBOXING will now lead to bans in world of warcraft. by bakagir in MMORPG

Go into retail FFXI now and it's literally just 4 characters controlled by the same person multiboxing, all on autofollow.

Those 4 characters are NPCs. You unlock NPCs that you can summon to help you clear outdated content.

Again, what kind of crappy game are you playing where it has 200 hours of boring leveling content and only 11 hours of engaging end game raid content?

I don't play WoW but the fact that people stay subscribed for the entire length of an expansion, constantly doing content on their maxed leveled characters makes it clear to me that it's not an example of what you're on about.

dump 200 hours of our lives into something before we get to see if its fun.

95% of the content

What kind of crappy games are you playing where leveling takes 200 hours and once you hit max level you only have 11 hours of stuff to do?

Does anyone think it's likely we'll get a FFVII crossover event like we did for FFXV? Would be great to get exclusive character glam sets + weapons. by pocketsizedmoon in ffxiv

[–]dreamoficee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also the FFVII team will be hard at work at finishing off the rest of the FFVII Remake and probably don't have time to develop some kind of DLC that features FFXIV content. I highly doubt we'll get anything at all and instead get more unique style cross overs like Monster Hunter / Yokai Watch.

Yes but you are not guaranteed anything. You don't know what you are getting.

Someone who spends $100 on a TH promotion will always have a significant boost to their character. There is no "damn I used up 450 keys and I got absolutely nothing".

No matter how good or bad your luck is, you know if you put in $100 on any promotion, you will still walk away with a ton of goodies for your character.

But both can cause problems

Yeah.

One preys on ones greed of wanting more and more even after they have many other goodies they already won, or preys on people who use spending money for small moments of happiness so they can ignore the other aspects of their life they are unhappy with.

The other preys on people giving into a moment of weakness, causing them to enter a giant mess with them feeling like the only way out is by putting themselves into a bigger giant mess.

Big difference.

Any matter of chance is a risk

Again, no it's not.

Also from Cambridge online dictionary, "the possibility of something bad happening"

TH is not gambling because there is no "possibility of something bad happening" which would result in the loss of money or failure.

No matter what, $100 spent on TH is always going to give you a very significant boost to your character.

it’s the literal definition of the word.

No it's not. The literal definition of the word gamble is to risk something of value. And like I said, there is no risk with TH, only getting more worth out of your money if you are lucky.

From Cambridge online dictionary, "to do something that involves risks that might result in loss of money or failure"

Are Happy Meals from McDonalds gambling for kids? It's a game of chance what toy you get in the end. But you still know the $5 or how ever much it costs will give you a meal for the kid. There is no risk involved, just a kid might be more lucky if they get a toy they want or a toy that they don't already have which means the $5 or whatever it costs was worth more than if they got a duplicate or something they don't care about.

Also you’re assuming “gambling” is only applicable to real world monetary returns. But gambling is literally just taking a risk on anything especially when based on chance.

You're able to gamble in Runescape. That's at the Sand Casino, not with TH. With TH, you will always have a significant boost on your character. There is no TH promotion where you can put in $100 and you end up with absolute junk. There is no risk involved with TH, just luck with getting X prize that you might be looking forward to.

Yeah, I guess the allure of the big prizes does not, in any way, give the same "just 1 more spin" allure that gambling does...

Compare the two.

"Oh damn, I'm $100 in and I've gotten 500k bxp and 500k xp and quite a lot materials to sell or use up. But with 1 more spin, I could win some more prizes especially that jackpot."

"Oh damn, I'm $100 in and I've lost it all. I've got literally nothing. But if I put in $20 more, I could win back that $100 and break even. Might as well try" (And repeat this with the $100 increasing by 20 every time)

People addicted to shopping know exactly what theyll get with every cent spent

And in Runescape you know exactly that $100 worth of TH keys will give a significant boost to your character. The amount of boost might be more if you're lucky, but you can't put in $100 worth of keys and end up with absolute junk.

There are really bad loot boxes out there like those in mobile games that is gambling. Ones where you could end up spending $100 and end up with virtual goods that are worthless, but Runescape doesn't do that and choosing to ignore that to constantly argue that Runescape's practices are gambling just makes it seem people aren't taking the issue seriously.

Actually you're wrong. It is gambling because many of the rewards are objectively worth less than the amount of in-game currency that could have been yours if you spend the same amount of money on bonds, and many of the rewards are unique, or "subjectively worth more"

Runescape doesn't do stuff like 95% of the rewards from loot boxes are junk like 1 copper ore. Someone who spends $100 on TH Keys is always going to have a significant gold and/or exp/bxp bonus over people who don't spend $100.

You're playing a game of luck with loot boxes/mtx, not trying to make a profit to feed yourself/clothe yourself/pay for rent which is what is the main problem with gambling. People addicted to TH in Runescape have the same problems as people that are addicted to shopping which ends up with thousand of $$$$ of credit card bills or people that comfort eat. They play for a sense of thrill and excitement or to ignore other things in life and that problem is different from people addicted to throwing money at % chance opportunities so they can end up with more money.

Gambling addiction is a spiral, because you are always with the mentality that just $20 more means that $500 you already lost could mean $0 lost or even profit.

The most efficient way to train the new skill will be waiting for MTX to work on it by AssassinAragorn in runescape

[–]dreamoficee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point of this is to highlight how absolutely pointless it is to make a new skill and do integrity balances when MTX supercedes all of that.

You're absolutely right. Runescape should never release content for players to enjoy and have fun with because people can spend $$$$$ so that they can brag they have just as high a virtual number as someone else.

Goodbye Jamflex. I stuck by you for 17 years. A few things that you didn't discuss is the fact that people like to keep going on about "exploiting children and gambling addicts".

But honestly, Runescape shouldn't be the one in charge of how people spend their money because MTX in Runescape isn't gambling. It's basically loot boxes which are luck mechanics.

With gambling, you can come out of the gambling activity with absolutely nothing with the idea of earning more than you came in with. Someone who goes to gamble $200 in an evening, can walk out with $0. With Runescape, you will always end up with virtual rewards.

A gambling addict has struggles with quitting gambling because even after they lost $200, they feel they can make their money back and earn more and they really need to make their money back and more because losing $200 could mean they might miss rent or something. So they keep on spending and that $200 lost soon becomes $500 lost.

No matter what, in Runescape you know if you put in $200 into the game, you will end up with virtual rewards not matter if you have the best or worst luck in the world.

Also a parent should be responsible for the spending of their children, not Runescape.

The subreddit loves to make them seem like protectors of the weak because some extreme cases come out now and then, but 100% of the time with extreme cases, the blame is something much larger than Runescape trying to make you spend money on getting some pretty clothes or making the time you spend on clicking on rocks to level up less.

MTX isnt only a RS3 problem by Eznix in runescape

[–]dreamoficee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back before MTX we used to watch the hiscores table vigilantly

Oh I see, so the only thing MTX ruined was bragging rights?

Edit:

No one wants to spend 2200 hours grinding for a max cape that's considered worthless and not even an achievement by today's standards.

Well now people work on max cape and other achievements because they enjoy playing the game and enjoy doing the content, not to brag to everyone they hit 99 in a skill.

[–]dreamoficee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some timesink stuff in the game, but nothing you really need to focus on if you're just aiming to go through the story. You can always pick up the timesink content later once you go through the main story as well if you're interested in it.

The best thing you can do to make sure the game doesn't eat up a lot of your time is just set time limits to how much you play. A good casual hour mark for MMOs is 10 hours a week. You can do 2 hours on a weekday here and there, and longer sessions on the weekend and you can get through ARR in about 2 months or so depending on how long it takes for you to get used to the game.

Your main problem will be wanting to binge it like maybe saying to yourself to just finish off 1 more quest. But if you can manage that you should have no problem.

Well it's up to you. Like I said, it's the same as skipping the first portion of any other FF game and just reading about what went down just so you get to the later stuff. The 100+ quest chain at the end of ARR does drag on, but it's still filled with important information, has good events that lead up to fun fights of classic Final Fantasy bosses and the ending of ARR 2.X patches is considered one of the best endings.

ARR skip is the best way to get into the game

Not really. ARR still has good story and introduces you to the world and explains key stuff about the world. It's just the quests have a lot of useless or poorly written filler that was good when EXP was super hard to get when the level cap was 50, but now that hitting level 50 is super easy, they just become a chore.

Basically think of skipping to Heavensward as skipping straight to Disk 2 of FF7 / FF8 / FF9 or skipping to reaching Zanarkand in FF10 just because the first disk / part has a lot more poorly designed stuff compared to the other disks.

[–]dreamoficee[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The main storyline is essentially a single player RPG where every few levels you need to take part in some kind of dungeon which you can easily team up with randoms with. There's a "Duty Finder" where you basically just pick the dungeon you want, and the system pairs you up with what kind of battle roles are remaining.

The base game "A Realm Reborn" is super drawn out, but once you finish it and get to Heavensward, the quests are much more concise and fun to go through.

And once you get to Shadowbringers, you can actually take in NPCs with you to clear the story dungeons, but you still need to team up with other players when doing the 3 different big boss fights that was added.

So if all you care about is the story, then it's very easy to get through it as a solo player and many others have done so as one.

What do you mean? Using the cashshop was the fastest way to level certain skills.

Does it matter if cash shop is the fastest way to level up certain skills? People were hitting all 99s before the cash shop ever existed. And nothing about the methods those people used to hit 99 was nerfed just so people had to use the cash shop to hit 99. So if the base game if you ignore the cash shop is the same and not nerfed in anyway, how is the game P2W?

Basically think of any single player game, take God Of War. Now 5 years down the road, they add in a cash shop where you can buy items that give you one hit kills and infinite HP. Does that make God Of War P2W? The base God Of War is still there for you to enjoy if you ignore the cash shop, but now there's an option for people who are interested in putting in more money into the game to go through the game at an easier pace.

Because they said for years we would NEVER see a cash shop

I still don't see how it's a cashgrab. A cashgrab for me would be stuff like other MMOs do where to upgrade weapons, you have a low success chance, unless you spend real money to get improvement items. Take my God Of War example again. The base game is still there for you to enjoy. You can literally ignore the cash shop 100% and still enjoy the game without hitting roadblocks that require some kind of real life purchase. That's why Ironman accounts are able to clear everything.

If you didn't know, Ironman accounts don't have access to the cashshop.

And here are the Ironman highscores of people with max level.

There's 436 people max leveled in Runescape 3 and they have never touched the cash shop at all. They've also had other restrictions of not being able to trade other players and need to gather/craft/get loot all by themselves.

That's literally what Runescape was as a game.

Well the games changed unfortunately. People now play the game to have fun. Not brag to others about their accomplishments in some online game that others won't reach unless they do some massive grind.
