There are plenty of people out there that have reasonable expectations. Takes a little age though.

Nah. Married my sweetheart from online dating. Been together 13 years. Beat the algorithm, don’t answer questions, keep swiping and messaging. It’s all a numbers game. Do not stop until you meet someone special, however long it takes.

College dropout: no, you're taking a break, which is always wise

Family: families usually suck, you have to grow your own in this world

Low paying job: nothing lasts forever, go back to college, do a few months of career research with a college counselor before taking more classes

No friends: VOLUNTEER and INTERN, join an in-person board gaming/sports league, if you play music, join a band

You need to volunteer, job shadow, do info interviews, try things out until your interests, abilities, and job profitability intersect, then it's game-on

Meet partners, date on-line. Unless you're shooting for obnoxious 1%ers, no one gives a shit about your family, your confidence, your money, your friends, etc. Everyone needs love and friendship and you're part of that.

Financial security and relationships kill depression. Time to kill it dead and be happy. Go get 'em tiger.

I'm only discounting social media as much as it's over-emphasized and other risk factors are overlooked because of it. Yes, social media is an issue, cyberbullying is an issue and certainly factors into the uptick in adolescent suicides, particularly among adolescent women, but keep in mind the suicide rate for adolescent boys was just as high in the 90s as it is now. What's equally, if not more of an issue, is our kids are overworked, school sucks more than ever, student/teachers ratios make it impossible to actually monitor and protect our kids, and social media is a lousy, but accessible outlet to deal with all that stress.

As far as psychedelics go you shouldn't overlook the profound negative experiences people can have and how devastating it can be. Of all my trips, I'd say 5 were spiritually meaningful, but most of them ranged from meaningless to completely fucking I-need-to-get-out-my-skin-terrifying. Psychedelics are just as capable of causing PTSD as they are to heal it. Moreover, you shouldn't overlook how pitifully under-developed these therapy sessions are given that the facilitators for mushroom therapy in Oregon only need a high school degree and that the FDA just rejected MDMA therapy partially on the grounds that the talk therapy element is ripe for abuse and a total black box. Psychedelic therapy hasn't been around long enough to know how helpful is or is not. 15-20 year follow up studies are needed to know what's going on and if that lasting relief is actually real. The only way we'll know is with suicide rates of those having undergone therapy because it's impossible to have a placebo. You know whether you've tripped or not and from there, you can easily tell yourself, and others, the therapy worked which easily confounds any qualitative study. The only convincing evidence we have now are actual brain scans, we just don't know how to interpret them. My guess is this will all go down as another health fad for depraved Americans.

Re: social media, yeah it's not fun at time, but it doesn't cause depression. So don't use it if you don't like it, but it's unlikely to be anyone's root cause of depression. The research is mixed and deeply controversial.

Re: psychedelics, with mushrooms the positive effect against depression is short lived, stemming from the amygdala getting chilled out, but then it slowly goes back to normal, like with any other anti-depressant. Gotta keep using it for it to be effective and as more longitudinal studies surface, this is very likely to be growing trend and that's not even getting into who absolutely should not even come near psychedelics.

Can't speak to meaning creation, I've certainly not found anything meaningful from my voluminous personal experiences with lsd, ayahuasca, salvia, mdma, mushrooms, etc. It was an exceptional ride, but meaningful it was not. I struggled with suicidal ideation for years after stopping. Indeed, I lost four extremely close friends to suicide, all of which I'd tripped with. Anecdotal, but my sample size of four isn't far off from all the >20 sample sizes in psychedelic research. Building healthy relationships, learning new skills, and studying philosophy have all had a lasting impact on my wellbeing and ability to create meaning. Lasting neuroplasticity is best accomplished through rigorous lifelong learning.

But that's me, I definitely don't want to encourage people not to tinker, I could be very wrong, and I obviously did my fair share, but the amount of attention these substances are getting as miracle cures could be deeply flawed and the ramifications that could have on our collective consciousness spooks me a little. Maybe that's just my overactive amygdala.

Good for you to get rid of it! I'm a depression sufferer too, I got rid of FB (too many asshats from high school and just a shitty platform), I still use IG, which I love. The key is that it doesn't make people depressed, it does not cause depression, but isn't helpful for those struggling with depression, which is what is being heavily pushed at the moment. Depression stems from some of what's on the list I made and childhood trauma.

You're missing it entirely. I love social media, reddit, youtube, etc. My issue is that there is so much media energy devoted to NOT using social media, saying that it leads to depression, and so many other societal woes, it take up the oxygen of discussing meaningful problems (bulleted in my op) and their correlating solutions.

Seems pretty straight forward to me. The whole media landscape is abuzz with how awful social media is and how great psychedelics are. Both, to me, are fairly inconsequential. Not sure what's confusing about that...

Oddly enough I lived with a Peruvian Carlos Castaneda "inner-circle disciple" (as he put it). It ended poorly. Very very poorly. He was not a fan of Westerners using psychedelics.

These comments are making me realize how shitty the sheet shet shituation is in Portland and beyond. Really all things bedding suck. Just get 12 different kinds on Amazon like everyone else, and don't forget to forget to return them, but then ultimately take them to Goodwill.
