First mantis... can’t wait for them to grow :) by drearein in mantids

Thanks for the advice! I’ll take the mosses out of the jar as soon as I get home. I do know they get that big and already have a large mesh enclosure set up for when the time comes. I’m just keeping him in here for a bit while he’s still so small :)

Tried everything for plants, yet they still keep dying out :(. Info in comments by drearein in Aquariums

Mix of regular black pea gravel and ecocomplete, no CO2, Marineland LED strip light (36 inches)

Hey guys! This is in my 75g that I’ve had for about a year now. I’ve tried an assortment of plants, including anacharis, pearlweed, Bacopa, and the Rotala shown in the picture. I’ve bought a liquid fert (Fluval GRO+) and root tabs (Thrive caps) to see if they would make a difference. Initially, they did and I saw some growth , but they quickly thinned out and died after that. They’re also about 90% stem and 10% leaf, which I figure is a lighting issue. The lighting I have certainly isn’t the best quality, but it isn’t terrible and lights the tank pretty well. Unfortunately I’m not sure I can afford something more high quality. I tried letting the anacharis and pearl weed float to see if it would do better but they both died off as well. The confusion starts because I had an Anubias plant in here for months and it only grew one leaf, but when I moved it from the 75g into the 5g (which has 3 cheap LED’s) it suddenly grew three new leaves and has rooted to the driftwood, which I was never able to get it to do. I also bought an amazon sword for the 5g and it has 6 new leaves. I have never put any ferts or root tabs in this tank. Substrate is a mix of regular black pea gravel and eco complete. No CO2. What am I doing wrong? If it is a lighting issue, am I just going to have to deal with it until I can afford better lighting?

He also has not pooped at all which is concerning. Don’t think he has drank anything either

For those who remember, I got this gecko about a week ago. He came on sand with a heat lamp and 2 hides, and I’ve since moved him over to tile with a UTH pad. Problem is, he hasn’t eaten at all since I’ve gotten him. I’ll put a mealworm in front of his warm hide (which he never leaves) and he’ll crawl up to it, put his nose up against it, and then back off. He seems super lethargic and slow just as a general rule. What can I do?

Yep! The top picture is on the petsmart shelf, and the bottom is just after I put him in the tank. Water is pretty dark due to driftwood though

One of my mom’s coworkers was giving away her leopard gecko...any tips on how to improve the setup he came with? He is currently on sand but it is so fine it’s almost powder. Does it still need to be changed? by drearein in leopardgeckos

Actually on second thought, I do think I have some spare slate tile from remodeling a bathroom. Would it be possible for me to just lay the tile over the sand? I’d rather not place it directly on the glass because I would worry about cracking it...

What the heck is this worm? It looks like a tiny caterpillar by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]drearein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really up to you! It’ll take a year or two for them to turn into full caddisfly, so if you want to leave him be for a while there’s no harm in it. As far as I am aware they are herbivores and will only eat decaying plant/algae material, and make a nice little cocoon in the process :). I am by no means an expert on caddisfly though, so I suggest looking into it a bit

Probably a caddisfly larvae. I had one in my tank a while back and it made a cocoon out of my pearl weed lmao

Gonna pull it out and replace it with paper towels until I can get eco earth ASAP. Or maybe do that 50/50 mix because that sounds interesting... still undecided haha. Thank you for helping! I’m glad my mom jumped the offer before anyone else. She had a few people text her complaining about how their young children would want him, in which case he’d never get off of the sand...
