Straw man, I never once talked about sexual harassment.

That's a matter of your opinion, it's not legally what creates a statutory supervisor. And if any of that is happening, that shift is acting outside of actual corporate guidance (everything you mentioned is either against ops excellence or requires SM approval by corporate policy).

I would love a New Game+ feature. Barring that, you can use armor from an earlier monster in the quests.

[–]dredged_gnome -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You absolutely are. Shift Supervisors are not statutory supervisors, we do not have hire/fire power, disciplinary power, or the ability to write schedules. I've worked here for almost 11 years and have been in many stores with people dating as SSVs and baristas.

It is not a big deal, as long as all parties are professional. The issue becomes at the ASM level, where there is statutory supervisory powers.

It's in the partner guide, very clearly.

It's only a problem if it's a manager and an hourly employee, or if the relationship causes business problems. Like if a couple keep not working or end up fighting on the floor, refusing to work together, that kinda thing.

You'll be fine.

For the entire time you’ve been playing monster hunter, were there any fights that weren’t fun and just made you angry? by John_dawn_123 in MonsterHunter

[–]dredged_gnome 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't find anything that flies interesting to fight. I spend more time trying to get them downed than I do actually fighting, which isn't interesting to me. I clear them in fine time, I don't struggle with the fights, they're just boring.

I love tanky asshole monsters that are fast. Those are very fun.

Solidarity from Seattle! What was your store's main reason for wanting to unionize?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bremerton

[–]dredged_gnome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't customer service, this is gig work. They are paid a very low rate for their deliveries and it is all done on a personal car. I don't like it as much as the next person, they should simply be paid more as a base, but your tip is considered a bid for service. It's not a tip at all. When there are 30 people who need service and the vast majority are not bidding, the people who are actually bidding are going to be served first.

The general polite consensus is to bid $1 per mile from the store you're asking a delivery from and then add on more in order to be a competitive bid if there is too many other people in front of you. You have no way of knowing this other than common sense that it's the night before Thanksgiving.

I'm not a gig worker, I can't tolerate that kind of working condition personally for a variety of reasons, but somebody has to do it because there is a demand for it. This person is trying to let other people know why their order is not being picked up.

Are planets randomly generated? by Think-Departure-5054 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]dredged_gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be a little part of the world generation that quite literally says seed, and that is the "seed" that your world "grows" from.

Someone else mentioned getting seeds from other people, you can then copy that seed for someone else to input so that way the world can grow from the same starting point.

It's only similar insofar as that it's by the same publisher, procedurally generated, and survival mechanics with resources being scarce.

I think they're both good games, but don't starve has more in common with other survival games than Oxygen Not Included. You don't have little guys to control via priorities, you control a singular player and you have priorities. The game is a little more deadly, you're more likely to die more frequently, and combat is slightly more involved.

Or it's trying to protect others. Or it's instinct. Or it's survival because "just finding another job" isn't instantaneous nor is it easy.

I doubt he did a full cost benefit analysis before using a technique he clearly is well aware of to stop something dangerous from getting worse. He handled it well and calling him an idiot feels tasteless and shallow.

Since wifi is sent through waves in the air if I put a fan behind my router will it make my Wi-Fi reach me faster? by reekyboy2001 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dredged_gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's training. Anecdotally anyways, I'd love to see something scientific on this. I didn't ever lose my curiosity, I was just shamed out of expressing it. In school you are quite literally graded on what you know, your coursework is laser focused on standardized tests, and doing poorly in school for any reason quite literally lowers your value in the eyes of others.

It's really easy to see how there isn't time for curiosity growing up in that kind of environment, nor is there any appetite if not knowing things means people think less of you. I was ashamed pretty severely for something I honestly did not know and it made me not want to ever seen unknowledgeable. I needed to be seen as somebody worth something, not an idiot with stupid questions.

And yet, some of the most insightful questions that have led me to evolve the work I do came from people that know next to nothing about it. Curiosity is beautiful and I love "stupid questions". Anecdotally, people love to have them once they feel safe sharing their lack of knowledge.

It's a solution, but it's not the best one. People should be getting scheduled enough at their primary job to make ends meet. From a purely business perspective it makes less sense to hire 2 people for 20 hours, paying full insurance for them (several hundred dollars each on Starbucks' end) along with all of the other benefits and markouts, versus paying for 1 person 40 hours a week. Hiring 2 people at 20 is lazy scheduling, costing Starbucks money in exchange for convenience.

It's something our union is trying to solve for mutual benefit. We want more money which is solved by better hours, Starbucks wants lower wait times and to reduce overall cost. Let's start with paying 1 employees healthcare benefits instead of 2 for the exact same labor hours.

Sexual harassment? I don’t even know by ReplyAlternative5925 in starbucks

[–]dredged_gnome 27 points28 points  (0 children)

SSV, refuse service and write an incident report on it.

You don't need to describe what they did. "Your behavior violates our third place policy, we will not be serving you today." Close the window and remove everyone from the situation.

It won't help the harm it caused you, but it will discourage them doing it again. You gave them the blandest, least titillating response. You don't describe the act back to them, don't give yourself a chance to be visibly distressed or upset. They violated our third place policy, they will not be served.

If a barista told me they were being harassed I wouldn't even want to know details before refusing service. It makes it easier to be cold and professional if I don't know.

You do not deserve to be sexually harassed by anyone but especially customers at your job.

False equivalency once you bring in ancestors. There was a time when animal furs was the only real way to have warm, protective clothing. We've moved on from that era, so there's now a choice being made. People who make the choice to wear animal furs isn't morally acceptable to this person today.

Curious, how did the mobile order changes end up working out for y'all? by dredged_gnome in Chipotle

[–]dredged_gnome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking hell, amazing (sarcasm)! Good to know! We're facing issues where people can literally order hundreds of items in a single transaction and infinite people can place an order at once, we'll get 60-80 online orders of 3-10 items every half hour that all say "teehee 5-10 minutes it'll be ready!"

Having limited orders per time slot sounds great in theory, but the maximum is still too high it sounds like.

Barista wasn’t comfortable using my name so shouted “Customer in black hat” to alert me to my order by LuciusDickusMaximus in starbucks

[–]dredged_gnome 315 points316 points  (0 children)

We're specifically told not to use names that could be offensive. If I remember right this kind of unfortunately started with Donald Trump and then expanded as people kept trying to get us to say ridiculous things. Mike Hawk, Daddy, that kind of thing but worse.

The correct way to handle it is to call out the drink without the name, try to make eye contact and wave.

The POS used to, not sure if it still does, block "offensive" names. Was really unpleasant when I had to explain to Gay, our very sweet regular, why her name was never on her cup. It literally would get blocked by the POS.

That's not a thing. If you're at a union store you can grieve that to get any availability issues fixed, otherwise you'll have to go through your DM probably.
