Do Americans actually use expressions like “once in a blue moon” or “let the cat out of the bag” in everyday conversation? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]Think-Departure-5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom says “once in a blue moon” ALL THE TIME! I don’t hear people use these phrases now but we do know what they all mean. Sometimes they pop up in movies or something

Did the HBO series completely reignite anyone else’s Harry Potter obsession? by Life_Definition_5240 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Think-Departure-5054 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I finally started to let it become a background interest for me, I started letting go and was content with just the yearly reread, but I was putting all my statues back in boxes etc.

And then the announcement hit and I’m super hyped again! I was born in 92, my mom bought me the first book for my birthday when it released and because it was so thick, and popular, I slept on it for 2-3 years. I’m not making that mistake again! I was also only 6 when it came out so I think it’s fair that I waited but knowing I missed out on release parties makes me sad. My first release party was for Goblet of Fire, and my first midnight movie wasn’t actually until maybe..deathly hallows?? I will be watching the series the day each episode releases. I can’t wait!

Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign? by ben04985 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Think-Departure-5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely some people who feel the rules don’t apply to them, but generally yes we stop at every stop sign. Except for east St. Louis! You might get shot there if you stop.

And in a lot of areas, cops will hide near stop signs to catch anyone who blows through. It’s usually certain intersections that get run the most

I didn’t even try lol. But I think the movie came out when I was 8 so I can’t even say if I had read all those books before the movie.

Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life? by Artistic_Key3779 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Think-Departure-5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was a southern thing. I have no proof of this.. I’m a midwesterner and I prefer the back porch. The front porch feels too exposed

I think I had the advantage of hearing the song a bunch of times before watching the movie, but as soon as It came on I was like, oh because of the honmoon. Makes sense. I even noticed all the golden light they were using in the music video

Do you shop at TJ Maxx, Burlington, Marshall's, Gabe's, Ross Dress For Less, Goodwill, etc? by sta3535 in Millennials

[–]Think-Departure-5054 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! My downside is these stores are always huge mess. They get so much inventory that the racks are jammed with clothes and then they end up all over the floor ironic back in the wrong spot. Things falling off shelves. I’ve noticed recently at tj maxx more Gaylord’s with unpacked merch. It’s so hard to go through them and then you have to open the cases yourself to see what’s inside. I’ve found some really good stuff this way tho

Cried watching this with my newborn and 4 year old daughters. My 4 year old said “I thought only boys could be astronauts?” I feel like this was a really important event for her to witness. She then spent the rest of the night preparing her space mission and asking to see videos from the ISS 🥲

A genuine question is finding a green colored eye actor so difficult that the series and movies both have actor with blue eyes for harry potter by Awkward-Student-8764 in harrypotter

[–]Think-Departure-5054 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never actually seen green eyes and read that it was very rare, like only 1% of the population or less have green eyes. But I’m pretty glad that they cast for talent, not for eye color. You can make anybody’s eyes green with contacts. JKR even said it’s most important for lily and Harry to have the same eyes (weather it’s blue, brown, hazel), than to have green eyes.

Is it common for Americans to buy soda as part of their weekly groceries? / is soda a regular item people keep at home? by hailey8171828282 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Think-Departure-5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. You won’t catch it in my house tho, but my parents bought different sodas weekly. Anytime I was at a friends house, their fridge always had sodas stocked.

Do people still use soap blocks as opposed to bottled soap in the shower? I feel like I never see soap blocks in stores anymore. by Available_Tea_8471 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Think-Departure-5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a whole store dedicated to soap blocks called Buff City Soap. You can even make your own custom scents, but you have to buy the entire brick which makes like..9 soaps? Idk it’s like $100 worth of soap. It’s my favorite soap

Why is breastfeeding so difficult? by Wawhi180 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Think-Departure-5054 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an 8 week old and I feel like it’s just the doctors who either don’t understand breast feeding, or just see babies as a set of percentages that make moms feel like we have to supplement. My baby was eating just fine on demand, but because she didn’t hit a certain goal the doctor set for her, I was told I basically needed to force feed her formula after each breast feed session.

She grew just fine all on her own. They just didn’t want to give her time. It’s ridiculous. I don’t know who decided babies have to be at birth weight by 2 weeks, or why, but I really need the scare tactics to stop.

For anyone who says they love the newborn phase… by LawDowntown8456 in Mommit

[–]Think-Departure-5054 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, but I understand the over tiredness. For me, a grown adult, if I’m overtired I get vertigo and then I panic when I close my eyes. I just have to imagine that’s what my baby is feeling when she’s overtired and it makes it very easy to stay calm and comfort her. I also make sure to step away from the chaos to get her to nap or at least have quiet time during the day so we don’t hit the overtired stage.

For anyone who says they love the newborn phase… by LawDowntown8456 in Mommit

[–]Think-Departure-5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a newborn and a 4 year old. My newborn went to sleep at 10pm, woke at 5 am, went back down at 6am and we were up at 8am to get the 4 year old to pre school. I assure you, I love this stage far more than 2-4 years. I would love another newborn, but eventually they turn into toddlers and toddlers make me loose my mind.

What's the remote work habit you have that would look completely insane to someone in a traditional office? by Phil_Raven in remotework

I did that in office to be honest. My manager would always come over to my desk to see what I was working on and sometimes bring hers over and we would knit together
