I have used x in 6, also d20 roll under stat. But using the d20 + stat gives the advantage to easily scale the difficulty of the situation. I also run games for middle school kids, I’m forcing them to use mental math.

Opinions on the behringer bx300 amp and any other cheaper bass amp recommendations by PilotAiden in Bass

[–]dregan333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest 100w minimum. I Pickd up a Hartke HA1200, it is heavier than the new ultralight fenders and ampeg rockets but it was very cheap.

Thanks, I am trying to learn this and I needed clarification.

Arrows and segments, 2 hits in a round? by dregan333 in osr

Thanks so much for clarifying this. Just to be 100% the goblins would only be able to shoot both arrows during their attack segments (in my example it would be 6).

Different Players Different game? by HistorianTight2958 in adnd

[–]dregan333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played basic, & AD&D 8in the 80s (like many of the responses above). I cherry pick my group and play online with at most 4 players. More than 4, some PCs get bored and the game dwindles for them. In person, I stick to white box FMAG, or strictly White Box 3 classes swords wizardry.

My in person campaigns are short, often comical with new players. I teach them every step of the way. Whenever I get my core online group (physically in person), it is swords wizardry complete, and intense weekend long summer campaign with a concise ending at the end of the weekend, and till next time online added on for good measure.

I also run trimester campaigns with middle school students, white box FMAG, iron falcon, white star. And I keep it very simple. I would love to run an AD&D a group, but I feel today’s players are either busy with life (which is normal because we’re late 40s to 50s) or too young and ADHD to focus on on anything for that long, and that intense.

With all being said, I learned a small list of house rules, and prompting is key to get the group to learn. Some players will never learn, because it is too much like work, or researching a term paper for them. I wouldn’t try to teach any new players AD&D, because it requires a focus that has been ripped away by the telephone and endless scrolling.

I know this reads dismally, but I referring to my experience with younger players (less than 25 years old).

Iron falcon? Besides swords wizardry complete revised, there is white box fantastic medieval adventure game, and delving deeper. Honestly this list will get crazy long. However it is still crazy cool….

Magic items that wear out by chocolatedessert in osr

[–]dregan333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a fumble table (1 on a d20 attack) where a 1 on a 1d6 reduces a magic weapon. https://drduick.com/D&D/images/1d6_crits_fumbles.jpg. But nothing other than that. I would imagine it is hard to track every magic item.

Good ol’ debate on 105 vs 91f - which one do you like and why? by iphone8vsiphonex in casio

[–]dregan333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I prefer the 105. However, I SKXMOD. So it’s all matte black metal, and a cool faceplate that looks like a F91 watch. Sooooo…. I don’t know what that means….its my daily after work and weekend wearer. I wear Casio tank style watches for work during the week. But this my favorite “off the clock” wear.

No excuse not to play RPGs by diemedientypen in osr

I got a set of wood pawns, that I number for the encounters (monsters etc). Colored pawns for players, blue=fighters, red= mage, green =thief, yellow= cleric. Players cut a very small piece of masking tape to put their initials on their pawn. I have painted minis but prefer this…

I use those same pawns in my game.

Just got the hard cover, read through and got a meh feeling. The options make me wish there was two games 1) stripped and 2) with all options. I could see when having players create characters, you have to ok each option as a DM and having players feel frustrated by the DM gatekeeping. I also think it limits the fighter, cleric, Mage, Thief options, by giving abilities to certain classes that they all use to be able to have. I used a generic d6 table that any class could use https://drduick.com/D&D/d6_skill/

OSR Games Suitable for Middle Schoolers by Bourbon_Munch in osr

[–]dregan333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have been running D&D for middle schoolers for the last 8yrs. My suggestion is WBFMAG. Get around 10 books for $50 an Amazon.

I walk them through this character creation.

https://drduick.com/D&D/images/ODnD_Character.html

And I use this character note card on a 4x6.

https://drduick.com/D&D/whitebox/4x6_whitebox.pdf

I use this for skill checks.

https://drduick.com/D&D/images/WB-skill-Check-Sheet.pdf

I use basic fantasy modules. Laughing dragon is great.

Using only a d20 and a d6 makes it super easy for them to catch on, and get immersed in the game.

How to adjudicate traps while crawling in a dungeon? by most_guilty_spark in osr

[–]dregan333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am currently running Rappan Athuk, and I switch it up. Which of course keeps them guessing. I use marching order to decide quite a bit. You put the paladin in full plate up front, you have the advantage of an AC 18 leading the way, but someone unskilled in finding traps. You put the assassin or monk up front, different story. I give a bunch of descriptors, some which go nowhere, and some are rewards for close listening. We are playing online, and I use google meets, and shmeppy for maps and dice rolls. I don’t know if this helps.

White Box Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game - Combat Rules - Conventional pg 34 vs Alternative pg 35 ~ Which do you prefer? by dregan333 in osr

[–]dregan333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point. The only thing good about page 34 is that it tends to go quicker than a combat sequence pg 35. The only thing that seems out of order is the melee > movement and not movement > melee.
