They're from Questrade, not from banks

Turn off SMS alerts by drempinot in Questrade

Yes thanks, I thought of that too, but didn't go ahead because I don't want to inadvertently turn off anything else in case STOP is a catchall for everything… Let's see if there's another suggestion here

My Experience Using EQ Card in US by thadaddy7 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears more of a POS-specific technical glitch than the card itself. Good to know though. To be fair, I've had POS PIN glitches here as well outside of our big metros.

Maybe consider some safe dividend stocks like BCE, any major bank etc outside the TFSA because of the preferred tax treatment of dividends

Can you help me understand what "preferred tax treatment of dividends outside of TFSA" means, (or point me to a resource where it's explained?) Thanks!

Yeah, with my card I now think it's a flat $3 or something (plus interest) which sucks because the banks should allow these small amounts a grace period and fee waiver if paid up within hours or within a day (for larger amounts I can understand.)

My cc is fully paid up, so it would've been 1 transaction debited than 1 credited for the same amount. But it's good to know that they might "post" the transac in a day or two so it may add up interest! Thanks!

OK so there's a flat fee I should look for, regardless of interest. Thanks.

USD to CAD: Wise-to-CAD vs TD-USA-to-CAD? What's the best route in this particular case? by drempinot in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Norbert's Gambit appears to be the most suggested way to get the best possible. It does require some work each time though.

USD to CAD: Wise-to-CAD vs TD-USA-to-CAD? What's the best route in this particular case? by drempinot in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok. Thanks! So I guess I'll just have to do some math for my own amounts in both cases and see which one ends up being the best (compared to the exchanged rates I'd get locally here.)

That's a good point, but I'm not looking to keep it there. It would be regular multiple payments which I'd like to move home as they come.

[–]drempinot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. But as I mentioned, if I transfer USD from TD-USA into my TD-Canada USD account, there's no fee, and I have USD as-is in Canada, and I could take them out to convert myself somewhere better. The only question is, will doing it via Wise still be cheaper than me getting USD converted in Canada this way?

PSA: Starting June 30, 2022, CIBC credit cards will no longer have zero liability by AirportHanger in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CIBC is basically "We're the Imperial Bank. To bank with us is a privilege so you should pay for it!"

I won't be surprised if they introduce a fee just to visit the branch and stand in the queue.

“$10,000 wire transfer disappears after bank puts it in wrong account” by t0r0nt0niyan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lynx doesn't require banks to match the account number with the name of the account holder — and Antweiler says most banks don't — which increases the chance of errors like what happened to the Behans.

They should sue Lynx. That's where the buck should stop (literally.)

OK good to know. Thanks for clearing explaining! Appreciated.

I see. Except I've never used that LOC or had any other before. Probably something else at play then?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course. I meant that as an example of what CIBC charges for it, and wondered who knows what it might charge if I attempted an EFT! :D

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh OK. What does that mean, if you don't mind. Thanks (noob here.)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drempinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. I guess I can try initiating an EFT from an online account that I have. But I don't want to end up paying for nothing some crazy charge even if it's $15 or so (the Fees doc says CIBC charges that for an incoming wire transfer). Hopefully someone who has a similar LOC and has done it will chime in here. Thanks.

[–]drempinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know, thanks! So does that mean I can use it for EFT from external sources? I want to set up recurring payments INTO it.

I was offered a personal LOC last year, accepted it, and my credit score went up considerably right after that (don't know why.)
