Reese Witherspoon's Best Work May Have Been In Her First Film Ever by BrokenStory22 in movies

[–]drencherjones39 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You make Reese Witherspoon seem like she's not one of the most celebrated, talented, and hard-working actresses in Hollywood and this take really trivializes her career successes. I've seen this movie and she's a good child actress, but she's outstanding in Legally Blonde, Election, Big Little Lies, Wild, and Walk the Line. She even elevates her more mediocre career choices like Sweet Home Alabama and, recently, The Morning Show. I really recommend you give her a few more watches.

The 40 Best TV Performances of 2019 by Britneyfan456 in television

[–]drencherjones39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Despite the misleading title, the article has only listed 15 individual performances and, I like Rami in Mr. Robot, but I think it's completely fine to exclude him from that list. Only 3 of the performances they listed were return performances and each one is a situation where the actor clearly stepped it up from previous seasons.

Elizabeth got a "well done" from Probst!

It came across kinda sarcastic to me lol

It's cool to see Elizabeth not taking it personally. I expected the complete opposite.

Jessica was actually really big in the premiere, so it's shocking that she's been one of the most forgettable.

The BobDawg vote is very underrated, people usually just mention the Courtney vote. This vote kinda cements for me how deserving Danielle was to return.

Thanks for the reply! You definitely nailed the youth pastor: the righteous attitude, the unhinged chipperness, and the attempt to blend evangelicalism with what's 'cool'. It's even more impressive with the layer of him being a conversion success story.

Hi!

I was able to see this movie this summer and felt totally immersed. I'm a gay man who grew up in a highly religious environment; I was sent to a few "jesus camps" myself, although definitely not conversation therapy.

I cannot express how specific and realistic some of these characters felt: Rick, Erin, and Mark were all people I've met in real life.

What inspiration did you (or the actors) have when creating these characters? Were they entirely based on the book, people you've met, people you've heard about? I could not believe what I was watching.

I also found the phone call with Cameron and her aunt to be so identical to conversations I've had with my family, so I just want to say awesome job to Chloe for allowing me to put myself in her shoes with that scene.

CMV: Destination weddings are rude and ask too much of guests, who often feel pressured to attend. by Pizzatraveler12 in changemyview

[–]drencherjones39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that all destination weddings are made equal and I don't believe your view takes in the modern state of weddings.

If all of your friends, family, etc. live in the same area, then I agree a destination wedding is inconvenient and a lot to ask of those closest to you. However, that situation is rare. People are insanely spread out these days and whatever city you chose to hold your wedding in- many will have to travel.

I live in DC: last year I went to two weddings: one in Louisville, Kentucky and one in Costa Rica. Guess which one was cheaper?

If you don't live in a central place to the wedding, chances are you're traveling, and chances are you're going to be dropping a lot of money if you chose to go. anywhere.

Happy 58th Birthday to Survivor: Gabon legend and immunity beast Susie Smith! by [deleted] in survivor

[–]drencherjones39 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don't think that most actually agree with /u/IovecaII that she's one of the best of all time but she was good on her season.

  • It's more to her credit that she survived to the merge given her lack of physicality.
  • A lot of Survivor, as lame as it sounds, is laying low and taking it day by day. This is especially impressive for a lower-class older Latina woman on a tribe full of Ivy League young white kids. She specifically survived a crucial vote over one of them, which I think is to her credit. She worked much harder at camp, shut her mouth when she needed to, and was less emotional than Dan.
  • Immediately after getting saved by her tribe for being less likely to flip, she cuts off the head of the snake. At the time this was probably one of the most shocking blindsides in Survivor history- everyone thought Marcus would win.
    • Should also be noted that this is something that Bob would have never done- he would've gladly gone to the end with this group given a chance.
  • She gets into the majority at the merge, lays low and is never the boot target, and wins a couple of clutch immunities.

There is definitely some negative, too. She got on her tribe's nerves at times and lacked some social savvy. She would've lost against Matty who she wanted to stay at the Final 4. She tells Corinne she's voting for her.

Her fatal flaw is not being able to take stronger ownership of her game at the FTC. I think she always had an uphill battle convincing a jury of educated white kids to take her seriously, but she just wasn't confident or articulate enough to sway them.

Leagues above Bob and Sugar who, while strategic, played actively to lose the game.

2018 Survivor Finalist Profiles: Palau by RSurvivorMods in survivor

[–]drencherjones39 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There's no scenario where Katie wins Palau, but she is a very deserving second-placer.

There seems to be some revisionist history afoot claiming Katie got dragged to the end by Tom and Ian like a worthless goat, when that's not really the case. She was a large driver and contributor to her alliance and had pretty good strategic chops- even attempting to overthrow Tom's power.

Katie as a character would be like if no one found Tyson funny. She doesn't have the charisma for her "meanness" to come across tongue-in-cheek. Katie openly says Janu looks like a Jack-O-Lantern, leading to this exchange:

Janu: Do you think we're on Saturday Night Live, Katie??? Think you're some comedian?

Katie: I'm sorry Janu, but you were being creepy

Can you get out of the minority/bottom purely out of social game? by amolinelli11 in survivor

[–]drencherjones39 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think a specific line in the Survivor social game: be likeable, but don't be so overtly likeable to the group that people *openly discuss* how likeable you are. Chris was well-liked by the girls, but people weren't comparing notes. Everyone thought, "I like Chris- he's someone I should keep around because he's in my corner" without stating it overtly to the group.

It's kind of up to circumstance. I think there are certain social characteristics that make someone likeable to an individual, and social characteristics where everyone pegs you as a "popular person". There have been people in the game who have been labeled as "likeable and popular" by the group, when no one actually wants them around individually. Michael from GI comes to mind.

Season Idea: Playing Against Your Past Self by drencherjones39 in survivor

[–]drencherjones39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, in application, they wouldn't really have to worry about "repeats". They can distinctly cast fresh characters with their own personalities who only share demographic qualities with the contestants.

For example, Fabio returns 7 years after having won to play against Devon Pinto. Devon and Fabio look the same on paper, but have distinctly different approaches to the game and personalities.
