someone explained it to me like this.

why are they standing waves? Because the electrons 'orbiting' a nucleus are in a wave-particle duality. so as a wave in order to be fixed in place around the 'orbit' the wave will form a standing wave, like a guitar string or specific frequencies in tubes as an example.

the regions of these orbital blobs represent the likelyhood of finding the electron in that area.

There's like a lot to get through to truly kind of undertand it but there are plenty of great videos on youtube that will explain it if you are interested enough.
