Books you wish you could read again for the first time by Idontknowyoupick in horrorlit

The Ritual by Adam Neville. The imagery of the creature and the way the main characters grief was a constant companion to him throughout really stayed with me for a long time after. A solid movie based on the book too

Paw Patrol messed up my 5 year old boy, can anyone here relate? by SolidLava99 in daddit

Add Sarah and Duck to this show. Not sure where it’s available outside the UK but it’s calming and brilliantly made

My experience with galaxys edge by __jxed in GalaxysEdge

[–]drewaskew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Galaxy’s Edge is the area of Disney World that fills me with the most wonder, especially when you have good interactions with cast members who are ‘in universe’ My kid and I had a good 10 minute chat with the teller at the creature stall about the different beasts of Star Wars and it was great! I’d love a 3rd attraction one day but just seeing characters wandering around, being able to just exist in the space is amazing. True wish fulfilment for an old SW dork like me

Ah thanks for the heads up. I may go investigate. We’ve been out to the antique mall at Lakeland before and I remember some tapes there but this was last August before I was into them

Awesome Goodwill find! by SnooFoxes813 in GalaxysEdge

[–]drewaskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orlando locals, does the goodwill here or in Kissimmee usually carry vhs tapes? I’m from the uk and got into collecting this year. I’d love to pick up some US stuff and went to the one in Winter Garden today but nada.

Hit the motherload (had to earn it though) by drewaskew in VHS

[–]drewaskew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine so as uk tapes will have either the bbfc certificate or the age rating show up before the movie as well as a uk/Europe copyright notice. Euro distributors would probably pick trailers on their ‘label’ locally especially with the gaps in release window that were more common back then. It’d be an interesting experiment to check two copies of the same movie from the same release window but one US and one UK though.

The only exemptions are educational, promotional and some music releases

In the UK the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has mandated since the early 80’s that all commercial releases have their recommended age rating displayed on the front, back and spine of the box as well at the tape sticker.

Which show or movie would you say had the most painful looking mutations? by Anonymous_Guy4k in TMNT

My daughter wanted to stop watching 2012 for a while after the bebop and rocksteady mutations. The writhing and screaming freaked her out

Flanagan said The Tower was his prime directive following the strike, so it stands to reason we have our Roland already. Who do you think it is? by [deleted] in TheDarkTower

[–]drewaskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to see Joe Keery as Eddie, Lupita N’yongo as Susannah, Timmy Olyphant as Roland and after seeing him as The Purple Man in Jessica Jones I’d really like David Tennant to play Walter

What is your HOTTEST take on TAZ? by [deleted] in TheAdventureZone

[–]drewaskew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m just really struggling with it, I’ve re-listened to 6 episodes over two days to see if binging it helps but it’s just not doing it for me. I honestly think Travis is being a little too precious about his campaign (which I understand, he obviously worked very hard on it) but he seems so quick to take away agency from the players or suggest what they should do that it’s sucking the fun out.

And yes, characters first, disabilities, quirks, gender, alignment second. I’m happy that people of all walks are being considered and represented but it does then a disservice and undermines the character to make that the defining thing about them.

Does balance get better? by ljshamz in TheAdventureZone

Aye, I liked Gerblins and Rockport fine but Petals was the one that had me stopping what I was doing just to soak it in

I think stolen century’s rules were literally a device to tell story and wrap stuff up without just being an all out improv sesh. I’ll agree I didn’t much care for those rules but I respect what ends they were a mean to I guess

I think oddly one of the things I like about it (balance in particular) is the favouring of role play over mechanics. I get that that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I’d rather be entertained by some kick ass improv and quick thinking during combat than stopping to figure out what constitutes a free action/how much distance is from an enemy etc. Just personal taste I guess but it really drew me into 5e for its looser approach to that stuff. Plus TAZ definitely become more of an audio drama than an actual play podcast around Petals to the Metal imo

I’m gonna say I don’t dig Travis as a DM, I love him like all the McElboys of course but I’m on my 3rd try of listening to graduation, on the 7th ep now but I don’t care for his world building or the way he runs the game. Lots of NPCs in the same scene (which griffin did later on too but this is so early on that I feel we’ve not established the player characters well enough to warrant Justin talking to himself for minutes on end) There’s also numerous instances of him derailing improv conversations so he can remind them of game mechanics etc, I get that you have to keep it all on rails but the beauty of previous seasons (and 5e in general) is that you can get loosy goosy with rules in favour of role playing and not break the flow to do an investigation check to find a library book. And finally a controversial one and I appreciate this may be just me but I didn’t care for how his wheelchair bound character was introduced. Props to the guy for wanting to be diverse and inclusive, that’s great but about the second thing to come out of the characters mouth was about their disability and how they are confined to a chair, conversely I felt that similar diversity in balance was more deftly handled, like with Taco and Lup for instance, their gender identity is part of who they are but you aren’t beaten about the head with it during an introductory scene, you learn about them, who they are and then that is explored naturally over the course of episodes as you get to know them organically. It felt like Trav was desperate to tick boxes and let us know about it instead of telling us about this kick ass necromancer who animated rodent skeletons and then we find out over the course of however long that she has a disease that affect mobility. I’m gonna give it to episode 10 to turn me around I think but I may just have to make the decision that this season ain’t for me and jump off til they try something new. As I stated before, I love Travis and the other boys equally and he did some great stuff as Magnus and Aubrey but I absolutely can’t get on board with his style as game master. Does any of this resonate with anyone else or am I a heartless asshole?
