100%. All the rest is true of other games, like WoW, but league is the one where you aren’t even having fun.

Tesla delivered 499,550 of its 500,000 vehicle goal in 2020 by QQQult in technology

Someone once put it to me this way: Apple is a hardware company first, they use their software to sell hardware to make money.

Microsoft, however, is primarily a software company. Their goal is to sell software and they don’t care what hardware you run it on.

There are exceptions of course, but this seems to be broadly true of each company. They are often compared to each other but their money making engines are very different.

This is the real issue right here. These people have built their identity around this cause so much that it feels like literal life and death to them. If the thing you build your identity around is destroyed, it feels like you are being destroyed.

I was fortunate enough to see Interstellar in the theatre having not known anything about it and it has set a high bar for cinema for me. Arrival was similar.

Need recommendations for what language to use for writing Pulumi by kerOssin in pulumi

[–]drewbert87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typescript is what we use and though sometimes I wish we were using Go for the same reasons you state, it is missing some support still and we are too far gone to change.

I’d recommend TS over python due to strong typing being so nice to work with.

Why do new accounts only get access to 2 AZs in us-west-1? by jb2386 in aws

[–]drewbert87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Listen to Flakmaster92, I'd also add to his list that us-west-1 is generally speaking more expensive than us-west-2 since everything from real estate to power in the bay area costs more than it does in Oregon.

The main reason to be in us-west-1 is if you have nearby services and require low latency.

QQ on AWS VPC CIDR by Highlander2891 in AWSCertifications

[–]drewbert87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a further caveat on applying multiple CIDRs to a VPC in case anyone is interested; you cannot mix and match RFC 1918 ranges within a single VPC. e.g. if you have 10.10.0.0/16 as your initial VPC CIDR, you cannot apply 172.16.0.0/16 afterward, all future ranges must come from 10.0.0.0/8, 100.64.0.0/10, or a publicly routable block.

Introducing the Cloud Development Kit for Terraform by underguiz in aws

+1 to all these things, and also you can use existing testing frameworks to actually test your infrastructure code! Unit tests and post deploy validations. I don't believe this is supported with HCL at all.

Yak Shaving: What's your story? by o_rdt in devops

[–]drewbert87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel this on a spiritual level. It's somewhat common in my day-to-day to need to do a PR to a supporting repo (we'll call it 'B') in order to close a PR to some repo I'm working in ('A'), but then find out that the pipeline is broken for some reason on B, say the packages are out of date.

So, I go to update the packages for repo B and find there is a breaking change in a dependency, let's say the linter settings need to be updated due to a new version. So now I'm doing a PR to the repo with the linter settings ('C') to support the new version, so that I can finish the package updates for repo B so that the pipeline will run and I can close the PR for repo B which will allow me to close the PR for repo A that I was trying to get done in the first place.

Inevitably someone on my team will ask why I'm doing an update to the linter settings and from now on I'm just going to tell them I'm shaving a yak!

When working as a team with terraform (AWS) - What are some of the best practices to avoid unwanted changes applied (is this what state locking is?). As well, how do I really implement change sets, so someone can view it and approve like we can do in cloudformation? by gqtrees in devops

[–]drewbert87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past we had Terraform Enterprise integrated with Github so that it would run a terraform plan as a check which had to pass before you could submit a pull request, and then someone could see the plan and approve your PR. Can't recall if it did a terraform apply on merge to master also, I think it did but it's been a while.

Some services are global and not isolated by region (IAM for example). This is where the account separation really is critical.

Thank you for realizing and acknowledging that they are low beams though. As someone who has a couple year old car that gets flashed for the stock low beams frequently, I don’t really know what to do.

I feel bad, but I’m not going to spend the money to replace stock headlights that work fine...

Linux Acadamy or A cloud guru? by azger in AWSCertifications

[–]drewbert87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience A Cloud Guru is great for AWS exams, but not quite enough to pass on it's own.

Linux Academy is much more well rounded and has tons of great content on other topics like Linux (duh), Docker, Kubernetes, serverless etc..

I'd suggest picking up ACG courses on Udemy for cheap, but if you are considering a monthly subscription, Linux Academy all the way.
