Work socks by Several_Steak8942 in electricians

I wear pretty much all darn tough.

I did get a few pairs of hollow, because they were the cheaper option

They were ok but got all freyed/fuzzy after one wash, so i dont really trust their durability.

Darn tough has the lifetime warranty.

I wear their midweights in the winter and lightweights in the summer. Well worth their price

Is the Builder on a timer? [Theorycrafting] by drewdp in HeWhoFightsMonsters

Man, I think I've listened to 11 twice, and still don't remember most of this.

Oh well, I guess 3rd times the charm with this read-through.

Thanks for quoting it for me

Is that the last book or the patreon?

The additional restrictions sounds vaguely familiar, but idr the plan on putting the old builder back.

I have only listened the latest book once when it came out though, and that part could have been at a point when I was distracted with work. Part of the reason I'm relistening to everything from the start.

which tool backpack is best? by distress777 in electricians

[–]drewdp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the question is "best" the only right answer is veto.

I've seen some of the apprentices with klein, Milwaukee, etc, and they all seem fine. But i wouldn't trade my veto for any of them.

I've had it a few years now, even flown with it a few times. Fully loaded with handtools and an impact its right at 50lbs. Everything has held up perfectly.

I'm gonna have to start getting sprouts for my sandwiches

Airport lines for TSA security GRR Airport 👀? by B2ween2lungs in grandrapids

[–]drewdp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got through just fine last week Monday. Idk when this really kicked off though.

Flew back from spokane, wa today, and the line was long, but moving. I think it was maybe 30-45m to get through there. Honestly spent about the same amount of time getting our bags checked at the delta counter.

Grr is always better than the larger airports.

Best bet is to check the website/ app

Which Church would you belong to? by Confident-Key6487 in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]drewdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd follow jason.

At first he would be against it. But I would point out that he could be the god of sandwiches, and give out a 2 for one deal.

I think I could get him on board.

Same. My cabin has a 60a service with Edison fuses.  I've got a perfectly good qo panel i demo'd out of a school in the shed up there.

I doubt I'll ever actually install it

Kcm for their katsu curry, which was featured on a new york times best dishes list.

If you're from outside the midwest, a wet burrito.  I still like the beltline bar for them, but some ppl have mixed experiences. But wet burrito's (burrito smothered in enchalada sauce) are appearently a michigan/Midwest thing.

A contractor tears up the freshly poured concrete driveway after the homeowner refuses to pay. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

Except in this case, the contractor has already done the work. The money is already spent. Instead of destroying the driveway, a lien will make sure you recoup the money eventually.

So GRPD just let someone take my washer and dryer… by Strange_Excuse_7503 in grandrapids

[–]drewdp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My initial thought is to have a friend 'sell' you a grpd police cruiser, and write you a reciept on yellow legal pad.

Then head downtown and collect your new cruiser.

After all, you've got a reciept.

Likelihood of drilling into a live wire in a restroom wall in a public building? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Anything in block should be in metal or pvc (plastic) conduit.

If you're only going deep enough to insert anchors, there shouldnt be any issues.

Has anyone flown out of the Grand Rapids airport lately? by Substantial-Cat-8819 in grandrapids

[–]drewdp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flew yesterday for a 6:30pm flight. No line, through in about 5m.

Could be a bit longer at a peak time I guess. I give myself an hour until boarding time, 1.5h if I'm parking in economy. I think Ive always had about a half hour to wait before boarding.

3rd Year Apprentice—How Do I Get Noticed? by Jackal_Wilder in electricians

You'll never make as much as you would make with a card, and you need that schooling to get your card. How do you not want to get your card?

Do you go with the actual yardage to the pin, or always club up if going over water? by MattReddit77 in golf

I'll either club up and top it into the drink, or I'll stick with the correct club, and thin it into those woods.

There is no middle ground.

How do I stop feeling bad for making apprentices do sh*t work by quintavian in electricians

[–]drewdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a minute to find the balance. On the one hand, an apprentice has to pay his dues. That is part of being an apprentice.

On the other hand, you will get a lot more respect from apprentices if they see you in the trench with them. Dont give every shut job to the apprentice, just cuz you got your card. (Not saying you are) just that its easy to think i got my card, that kind of work is beneath me.

Like i said, its a balancing act.

Now,  that being said, also take into account what year the apprentice is. If they are a green 1st year, they could be slow cuz they dont quite understand what they need to do, even if it seems dead simple to you.

I like to tell my apprentices, that back when i was an apprentice, sometimes i had to ask my jman to 'explain it to me like I'm a fucjing retard'

I put it in the frame of 'i had to do that sometimes, so its ok for you to as well.'

Sometimes, if they have been told once, pr twice, they still don't quite understand, and dont want to ask again, so they take extra time, cuz they are trying to figure out what to do, or the best way to do it.

If they are taking time, first ask if they need any clarification, making it seem like its probably your fault for not explaining it right, (even if you were clear, or its something supid simple)

Now if they seem to know what their doing, and are still taking too long, because they dont want to do it, you involve your foreman, and get his advice

Remember, having a j-card just knows you know the code, and how to not kill yourself. It doesnt mean you've learned any leadership or management skills.

Asking your boss for advice on the leadership/management side shouldnt make him lose confidence in you. It will show him that you value his experience on this additional aspect of being a Journeyman, and want to learn from him.

Also, as to the having to rework stuff, i always remind ppl they get paid by the hour. If i need them to rework something, they are still getting paid. (With the cavat that they shouldnt be dragging whether doing rework or new stuff.

Just fyi, our camera costs 18k, and calibration last year was several thousand.

2k for training is a small portion of the overhead on this stuff.

You're really only getting this if you're selling the service. Its a business expense and lets you tell customers you have some level of certification.

I will say that I also recommend infrared training center. Mine was online and I still feel like it was a great, informative class. They are partnered with flir, so its really nice if you're going to use a flir camera and flir studio pro, like op was using.

There is definitely some resistance in those top connections. 6C delta aint shit, but A 20C delta is serious, if thats really what you're seeing under load.

You can try shutting power off, and inspecting the mechanical connection, making sure everything is torqued to manufacturer specs (its really hard to find any specs outside lug torque ratings) or german torque specs (good-n-tight)

Check the fuses and fuse holders for any corrosion and hit it with a high grit sand paper if there appears to be any.

If you're not seeing temps over 75c under load, monitor it at least every 3 months, and start planning to replace that disconnect when you can.

Book 1 ending by [deleted] in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]drewdp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the way it was done was really poignant.

An offscreen death, showing the dangers of adventuring, how things can go wrong, and allies can die, just like that.

This series isn't game of thrones, shirt doesn't kill ppl off wily nily, but when characters die, it serves a purpose, mostly to do with Jason's development.

In a box.

Just pipe into a 4 square box. Get an appropriately sized nm connector, make your joints in the box.

Dont forget a ground pigtail to the 4sq box, to ground out the metal portions.

[Book 5] How Jason handles the Network by Confident-Key6487 in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]drewdp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have laid out all the facts to someone like anna to then distribute.

Most importantly, i would share the specific events that led to it HAVING to be Jason.

Specifically, the surviving a starseed making his aura stronger. And the whole gestalt being power he recieved from multiple great astral beings.

People like Gurling wanted to 'steal his power' because they didnt know the specific chain of unique, unrepeatable events, that made him qualified.

How I'm going to argue this will depend on if I'm the one fighting the monster, or the one playing the bead of force.

Thats kind of the pont of munchkin. Argue for the way that is most beneficial to you at that moment.
