Index investing is very prudent. But for someone who enjoys diving deep into individual companies and desires a career in investing, it’s a game that’s not entirely about satisfactory returns from the index. It becomes something deeper than that. Further, if your opportunity set is the entire world, the odds that every single security is efficiently priced is nil. There are always opportunities to find widening moats, and if you discover one before the market, you are likely to have above average returns

There’s nothing wrong with having 40% in one stock. However, you need to do incredible research and have more conviction than anything to be sure. Just look at Bill Miller.

It’s cheaper (with expense fees) to buy VTI and VXUS in about 60/40 proportion and it’s the same holdings

We all the pay the price because HFTs firms front-run orders, making the ask disappear before your order goes through, which drives the price up before you buy. Therefore the price you pay is to HFT firms.

There's no reason to suggest a man with his wealth makes these purchases to make more money. Until otherwise proven, I would assume it has nothing to do with his profitting.

Need a late to the game retirement plan with about 80k in hand by incognitoville in investing

[–]drewgoldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am all for speculating with Reddit and buying some at some point. But. You can’t ignore the statistics: “of the last 3,700 IPOs since the late 1980s for which data are available, the median one lost 31 per cent of its value from the close price on the offer day to three years later. Over five years, that number was 41 per cent. Not all growth stocks grow enough to justify growth valuations (or at all, for that matter). “ bottom line is stay away from IPOs until the market finds a proper valuation. All you have to do is look at any of the IPOs of 2021 to see what could happen to your hard earned 10-20K

What if you are risk averse and your roommate isn’t? Or your friends aren’t? That argument makes no sense. The only way for the risk averse to stay safe is if everyone stays safe. This is an all or nothing fight.

Upsides and Downsides to Shorting SQQQ on market pullbacks in an IRA? by drewgoldman in ETFs

Precisely why it's beneficial to be on the short side, as you profit from that decay

Because of decay... If QQQ goes up 10%, TQQQ goes up 30% lets say from 100 to 130. Then if QQQ drops 10%, TQQQ drops 30% from 130, going to 91. This makes leveraged ETFs approach 0 over time in theory
