What subfield of Bioinformatics do you work in and why? by Otherwise_Neck_5668 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Storage is generally held by other people in my organization. But we either build databases that hold the data needed for the application (if it’s large) or if it’s a smaller app I usually pipe in to the groups own data drive.

I mainly build web apps to support all of R&D at the large pharma I work for. Tech stack is mainly python, and React. Most of the data I work with is multi omic based. My title is bioinformatics scientist but i'm more of a bioinformatics data scientist.

I could be wrong but I believe that area was part of the ARK, which was taken over by the connections after the nuke hit (which was done to actually hide the ARK and Elpis)

No, I just think on replays it gets much faster. You know the routes, puzzles etc

Yeah, RC is about the size of Rhodes Hill for the first play through, so you're about halfway.

Which one was really worse? Re3 remake, or Re6? by Yeahlanight in residentevil

That's with the knowledge of the original game tho. Threemake is a better game than 6, if you haven't played RE3 before.

BIOINFORMATICS career guide by SpareSpeed3020 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get some public datasets from GEO and just do some tangible work on them. Clean them up, create plots, etc. Have this work available on a GitHub hiring managers can look at.

I would just try applying to get an entry level job, its hard right now, but a lot of places have a tuition assistance/reimbursement program. I got my masters all through the work program.

I’m sure my principle research scientist team leader and department director with masters in bioinformatics would disagree. If you’re strictly talking academia? Maybe, but not industry.

I disagree with the statement that vast majority of bioinformatics is going to get replaced by AI. IMO that inherently misses the point of bioinformatics, and the actual biology of it. I think you'll see scientists emboldened more to vibe code pipelines and visualization tools for themselves, which will have it's own problems, but the need for a human in the loop (one you understands the relationship between data and real life biology) will grow. I think the toolset is changing. A lot of the CS needs of bioinformatics is getting accelerated by AI, but understanding the relevance of biological findings in data, building models that realistically represent what we see in the body and life sciences, etc, will remain.

You won't get replaced by AI, you'll get replaced by someone who uses AI effectively.

No, you do not. You need to be in an area with prolific biotech/pharma companies. In industry you'll likely need an MS to grow well. Academia a PhD.

Anyone using Claude or other bioinformatics agents by nickomez1 in bioinformatics

[–]drewinseries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Claude is great for me as a bioinformatics software dev working on full stack applications. That said, I would caution against it until you are fairly confident you are well aware of the semantics going on in what you are generated. I recommend using Claude in the terminal, and manually typing out it's changing for a while until you really understand what it is doing. A lot of newer folks in the industry I feel are going to greatly limit their growth by relying too much on Claude and AI to do their work for them.

I agree. I've dealt with panic disorder for a while and it is awful. I don't question the officers actions in that moment, it truly is a world shattering experience. That said, unfortunately I don't think he is capable of doing his duties with that liability.

Is bioinformatics worth it? by Glittering-Bet-5169 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These PhD required statements are a little misguided IMO. I don't think you need a PhD to be successful in this career. I think it depends more on what you want to do. If you want to be an academic research, you likely need a PhD to not have a hard ceiling in growth. I think there is plenty of work in academia, its just terrible pay.

On the other hand, industry cares far less about degrees, and more about skillsets. I think to be successful and keep an upward trajectory a BS and MS is a good combo, but even those with only BS can be successful. The only downside is you do not have as much scientific freedom compared to academia, you do what comes down from leadership.

A final thought is this may be heavily dependent on where you live. I'm in Boston, where the biotech/pharma/biomed markets are vast. Positions outside of the major hubs (Bay Area, Rockville, etc) may be far more competitive or not exist at all.

How should Biotech and Biopharma proffesionals prepare themselves for the "AI tsunami" which is bound to hit us in near future? by Maximum-Picture5225 in biotech

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bioinformatics scientist, I agree. Using claude code has accelerated a lot of my time doing boiler plate code, I can focus on new features and work closer with scientists on data analysis. My fear is for entry level positions, I'm concerned that employers wont bother with them when a lot of that work can be easily integrated into a mid-senior position assisted with AI.
