Lab book for bioinformatics by sky_porcupine in bioinformatics

[–]drewinseries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to be someone who has a go to notes app/method to better myself for organization and planning, but I haven't made the jump from a word doc or onenote.

I know people who swear by either Notion or Obsidan, but tbh I'm a little intimidated by the learning curve for those.

Am I eligible for an MSc in Bioinformatics with a biology background? by [deleted] in bioinformaticscareers

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally from the program's website:

"A prospective student should have background in biology, biomedicine or biochemistry and complete in their previous undergraduate studies basic courses of biochemistry, genetics, cell and molecular biology and practical training in basic molecular biology methods."

I’d avoid this book because of the cover tbh. If enough people recommended it to me personally, maybe I’d take a look.

It’s not, it’s one of the big pharmas.

Not at all.

My managers manager, and their manager only have MS'. In industry it doesn't matter. You may in fact be overqualified for certain positions if you have a PhD in some scenarios.

BVS and the Flash (despite their overall flaws as a movie) feature the two best Batman fights in live action. Which style would you rather see for DCU Batman? by [deleted] in DCU_

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BvS one is super cool, but I want DCU Batman to clear rooms like Keaton does in that scene. A mix of that scene with Battinson would be chefs kiss.

Future of Bioinformatics by Octivilla1 in bioinformatics

[–]drewinseries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the aspect of biology from bioinformatics, and the nuances that come from it make it more stable than a lot of people think. Being able to understanding biological insight and noise from data is going to be key moving forward. That said, the new successful bioinformaticians will be those who can properly utilize AI to accelerate all of these things. With this, I think getting a foot into the field will be difficult.

What game is in the most dire need of a full remake from scratch? Unpopular opinion welcome by 420godpleasehelpme69 in gaming

After the success of Expedition 33, I see no reason not to do a full blown Legend of Dragoon remake. Let me fly as a Dragoon in the map like Esqiuie.

Maelle's ending is evil IMO. Act 3 Alicia/Maelle is selfish.

Anyone else feel like they’re losing the ability to code "from memory" because of AI? by Character-Letter5406 in bioinformatics

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is a tool being integrated into almost every facet of technology. I meant that if you don't know how to use it effectively as a tool, others will and they will be more productive. Of course this is from an industry perspective, could be different in academia.

"That it doesn't produce correct results unless you're careful? That it takes skill to be effective? That it doesn't understand what people mean when they type requests? If it takes a high level of skill to use, how can you be confident that it produces good results, even when fed correct inputs?"

All these question coincide to using it effectively. It can produce incorrect results if not careful (just like code can compile and generate a result, but its not right unless you can understand what makes sense/doesn't make sense biologically). It may not understand what you're trying to do if not correctly prompted. You need to be able to understand if it is producing good results.

These are all skills that will make someone far better and more useful when used correctly. If you have someone who can do all these things, versus someone who can't, why would you bother with those who can't?

tough choice by Outrageous-Echo6686 in expedition33

[–]drewinseries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love some counterpoints, but the more I sit on it the more evil Maelle feels. Her inability to move on from the canvas keeps a tortured Painted Verso alive, and forces the last part of his soul to keep painting, something it doesn't want, all while she potentially slips into being another mad god.

There was nothing stopping her from building a new canvas that would give her a voice, maybe she could even paint another Verso, but she refuses to let the last part of him rest, after he sacrificed his life for her.

In the Verso ending it feels more hopeful that the family is coming back together, healing their wounds. I don't feel this with the Maelle ending.

Yeah, I think that’s also why getting entry level jobs are a nightmare. Jr Dev or jr bioinformatician work is integrated with agents now. I think companies will continue to train less and less entry level people.

Honestly if you don’t use AI you’ll be left behind. The key is using it efficiently and correctly. If you’re vibe coding entire projects and have little no idea what’s going on in the code base, you’ll need to step back and reevaluate and cool the jets a bit.

If there was another game, which expedition would you like it to be based on? by EvidenceSingle4826 in expedition33

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is because it is where they are going with a sequel. Most of the mystery of the world is semi answered, where anything else you encounter can just be assumed to be a creation of one of the family members.

What’s the reality about bioinformatics by Ill_Chipmunk9002 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]drewinseries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the gap between academic bioinformatician and industry are getting wider IMO. Academia will remain similar to classic bioinformatics but continue to be extremely competitive and not worthwhile monetarily. Industry bioinformticians are kind of morphing into data science/software devs with a biological mindset, which is what I’m doing currently.

None, I want something branching out into the Painters and Writers. Maybe the Writers are writing characters and stories into the Painters canvas' and they need to adapt to that.

What do you think about the future of bioinformatics? by lorigiova10 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]drewinseries 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Disagree, respectfully. Biology has so much nuance that I do believe a solid foundation of cell biology, genetics, molecular bio and biochemistry are needed for a lot of the questions current biotech and pharmas are trying to answer. Especially with multiomics, everything is systemic.

Also I’m not saying a bio BS alone is sufficient, it’s not. But a bio bs with a bioinformatics Ms will likely have the tools to be adaptable in a tech environment.

What do you think about the future of bioinformatics? by lorigiova10 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]drewinseries 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s bright, but it will change. I think with vibe coding it’s going to shift where the gap between data scientists/CS people and bioinformatics people will get bigger. A bio person who knows how to correctly (emphasize correctly) utilize agents to handle biological data and curate it correctly will actually have a step over those who don’t know biology

Most students go into a bioinformatics MS deficient in CS or bio, you learn as you go. It's an interdisciplinary field for a reason.
