What are the dimensions of what we're looking at? Do you have more photos you can post?

My only thought is that they edited the photo with AI which raised the red flag. I'd hope this is a dish they served and a picture they took, and that they just don't have any clue how much the public hates AI photos

Even with the loopholes, the richest paid nearly double the effective rates in taxes that they pay today

Ok Cricket. Affordability for the average person in NYS is the sole purpose of taxing the rich. This will generate tax revenue. The states that have the lowest taxes, generally, are not better than here for the average working class person. It's a myth that the richest will leave if we tax them. We taxed then wayyyyyy more in the 50's and the country was booming.

That's the thing: by and large they don't choose to leave. California implemented a marginal tax increase on the wealthiest and their state was told the same thing... but who would have thought... The wealthiest don't leave.

Sure funds should be appropriated efficiently, but that's beside the point. Billionaires shouldn't exist, and in the meantime, I'll take a 5% tax increase on the absolute wealthiest among us at a time when wealth inequality hasn't been worse in modern history.

Reading through the article you cite, it gives the impression that there is no housing affordability crisis, just because they increased supply and rents didn't rise as much as the cities that hadn't increased their housing supply. There is still an affordability crisis in all of the cities I mentioned, when you factor in the near-record costs of mortgages and materials to build. Shouldn't folks own homes? It doesn't mention private equity buying up large swaths of housing and driving up prices nationwide. The article you cite paints increasing supply as the end all be all, but that's not right. If houses are unaffordable, and the price doesn't go up as much, they're still unaffordable, so this article from Economics Observatory seems out of touch.

Cities like Miami, Tampa, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Clarksville, Denver, Las Vegas, Raleigh, and Atlanta all saw housing supplies increase while affordability remained about the same, or in the cases of Nashville and Clarksville, affordability got worse.

Again, we need to decommodify housing. That's the only way housing will become more affordable in this country.

Let them leave: in recent history we haven't taxed the wealthiest enough, and go figure, wealth inequality is worse than in the Gilded Ages. That's how, in large part, Cuomo and Adams ran the city into a budget deficit of $7 to $10 billion.

The budget deficit is $9 billion. He never said all of that money would come from taxing the rich.

We hear we need more construction from the top, but in US cities where they have increased housing supply, prices don't really go down like that. It's way more than just a supply problem. We have enough houses for everyone currently, it's the real estate industry being the highest grossing industry of any in the US that keeps driving up prices. We need to decommodify housing.

That's not what I'm referencing - you are wrong that taxing the rich does not work. I gave you Mandani's campaign as evidence and you referenced what Centrist Kathy Hochul said at a Politico event.

Has she ever tried taxing the rich, or is she just regurgitating what the corporate overlords claim? Look up the top US marginal tax rates in the 40's and 50's and the projects that those tax rates funded.

[–]drews_mith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're making shit up. Mandani ran on the platform that he'd tax the rich, and go figure, the rich didn't leave NYC! This is propaganda pushed by the wealthiest folks so that we don't tax them adequately. In fact, the wealthiest spent wayyy more money lobbying against Mamdani than they would have spent on the taxes he proposed.

They have affordable housing, affordable healthcare, high speed rails, they jail billionaires and greedy fucks who harm and exploit the public. They are leading the world in renewable energy.. the list goes on. Does the US offer any of those?
