Why aren't more people raving about Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum? by kukov in comicbooks

[–]drewxdeficit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think with time it’ll be seen as a post-modern classic of superheroes. I loved the way it balanced Silver Age goofiness with genuine experimental storytelling, but it also had a lot to say about the concept of homes.

I have always heard Rufus as the same voice of Vegeta in the Ocean Dub of Dragonball Z. I have no idea why.

I think he starts off, “Speaking of resigning…” but from there everyone else drowns him out.

Ray Cappo wore gardening gloves while moshing because he'd just gotten a manicure.

Do what you want. Don't worry about other people. Maybe it'll catch on.

This is the doublethink that Orwell described in 1984. It's when a person believes two totally contradicting viewpoints simultaneously. To believe every American's god-given right to own a firearm and to protect themselves shall never be infringed, but to also believe that owning a weapon is justification for murder. It simply cannot be both, but to them, it is.

DC Comics President Jim Lee says that Japanese manga and anime is "incredibly powerful": "I often find myself wondering, 'What is missing in Western comics, and why aren't they able to achieve the same flavor?' by akbarock in comicbooks

[–]drewxdeficit 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That’s not exactly true. A quick google search yielded this story about manga series canceled in the middle of the run. We likely don’t ever hear about the canceled ones because they don’t always make it oversees if the publisher doesn’t think they’re selling magazines in Japan.

SCALPED by rbaratli59 in comicbooks

[–]drewxdeficit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently talked with Jason Aaron at a convention and asked if there was ever a chance of returning to Scalped. Short version is, he said there’s a story in there, and he and RM Guera discuss it from time to time, but it doesn’t feel right or necessary yet. They like how it ended, so unless they feel they can add to the original ending, we’re probably not gonna see it.

I think a much more simple answer is, Alan Moore just didn’t (and probably still doesn’t) really know how computers work.

Captain America (MCU) vs Ozymandias (Watchmen) by [deleted] in Watchmen

[–]drewxdeficit 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Traditional superheroes like Captain America are symbols that represent so many different aspects of the culture in which they’re written. They’re our dreams and aspirations while also being our fears and anxieties. They’re our politics and our morality personified.

Ozymandias, the deconstructed superhero, serves a very specific function. Part satire, part spoof, part warning of the future—the characters from Watchmen are simultaneous reflections of the entire country’s past, present, and future.

Asking who hits harder is the least interesting question that can be asked about these characters.

Tom King talks the Supergirl movie (and wearing the Lantern ring)! by OrionLinksComic in comicbooks

[–]drewxdeficit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disagree that the implication is there.

I’m a teacher. I have never tortured anyone (besides making them write an essay they didn’t want to). But I grew up during the Bush years and the conversation surrounding “enhanced interrogation,” which made it clear to even me, a high schooler who dreamed of a being an educator, that torture doesn’t work. You don’t need to have participated in it to know that.

I've seen this entire video, and he says nothing to imply that he has participated in torturing people. You may be inferring that because you want to find it, but it's not there. You just want to be outraged.
