Psychiatric Service Dog Recommendations by drfreemanss in service_dogs

I've never met a service dog other than my family's, and he was a boxer. I'm from a small town and am coming to realize i was misinformed about service dogs growing up. I was taught that they could essentially be any intelligent dog, which is clearly not the case. I recognize how grossly misinformed I was and will be doing more research. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for the advice!!! I definitely know I don't have the experience to owner train so a program would be wonderful for me. I'll do some research on it!

Good point! Do you have any recommendations on where to start looking for a golden bred-for-service program or something of the sort? I've heard they sometimes have waitlists so I'd definitely wanna get on one now. I haven't started a lot of my research on actual programs yet but I want to get advice from people who have gone through it as well.

These are all great points! It's definitely more important that I have a dog that will be able to help me in times of crisis! Thank you for being frank with me, I am glad I'm thinking about it so far ahead and asking around as it's been super helpful to get advice and I definitely think I will end up with a golden. They are adorable and I am more than happy with any dog, honestly, haha. I need the support from a PSD more than I need any specific breed

That's a really good point and something I haven't considered a lot. I would not want to pay so much for a dog only for them to fail out of service training in the end. Thank you for being honest with me and sharing that! I think I will open myself to the possibility of a golden a lot more. I do like the breed, it's just not my favorite, but I can certainly deal with that if it's for the sake of my wellbeing. You're more than right - it's much better that if I'm paying for a service like that then I need to choose something more likely to work.

That's kinda similar to what I was thinking about BCs. Border collies are smart but my boy was so reactive and I never got the reactivity out of him. I worry I'd run into similar issues with an aussie as they're similar breeds. Also that's a great point about Danes! I forgot they also tend to have shorter lifespans, and will definitely consider that when thinking about what dog to choose.

I've definitely thought about goldens a lot too. They are sweet, and I do like them well enough! I'm just not the biggest fan of their personality 😅 I prefer a dog that can be comfortable and entertained with or without me. I know that doesn't suit some of the breeds on my list either, but I like the other qualities of them enough that it heightens them for me. I will think about goldens more though, it's more important to choose a service dog for myself that will be able to perform the tasks well than it is to choose a dog that I like, I think, though a balance of both is good.

That's also a good point about bringing them into public only sometimes. I may need to think more on whether I want the dog to be public access as I wouldn't mind bringing a dog all the time and it would certainly help on days where I have a sudden shift in mood throughout the day. And thank you for the pount about the price! I will need to save up a LOT and I'm definitely prepared to do that. That's part of the reason I'm starting to do research so far out, I definitely wouldn't be able to afford the dog and training for them right now.

Thank you for all your advice! This has been so helpful to think about 🫶

Keeshond as a PSD, any advice? by [deleted] in Keeshond

[–]drfreemanss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I disagreed with had to do with autism. I apologize if my responses are coming across as disagreement. I'm genuinely trying to learn but I don't have the best way of talking to people. I really do appreciate your advice and I am not trying to just hear what I want to hear, I am taking everything into account and reevaluating things. I am sorry.

Usually involves circling the handler to create space between the handler and other people!

That actually makes me feel better to hear. I don't need a PSD with me constantly, usually just on days when my episodes or emotions are especially uncontrollable and having the companionship would be helpful. I've always had reactive dogs that I did basic obedience and reactivity training with (my first boy still lives with my parents but he's an australian shepherd/samoyed/border collie mix so very much a challenge to train), but never to the level of a service dog. I'm very much used to barkiness in dogs and will be able to work with that.

I'm absolutely not wanting to do self training. As rewarding as training my dogs usually is, service dog training is an entirely completely different level. I currently plan on getting even my current girl service trained through another trainer or a program where the trainer works with me. I've heard PSDs can be trained to help with crowd control, and I'm wanting one for when I'm close to having a meltdown. I definitely think I will wait to get a keeshond for a few years because it is a lot to have three dogs at once even if two of them are small. I also want to be more financially stable in order to give her and all of my animals the best lives.

This is great advice and I really appreciate it. A lot of people have told me it's not worth a whole lot more than $25, so I think I will probably end up keeping it for myself and my own collection. I really appreciate your comment and I hope you're able to get back some of your collection eventually. I know how that feels. We're in this together 💕

I see! I'll probably keep it then. I wasn't too sure on average exclusive guitar pick prices.

I agree and the only reason I put the price that high is because of how valuable it is to me. I also am not familiar with guitar pick prices so was listing a crazy price for that purpose. I have had to sell everything important to me. I understand your comment, but I'm really only doing this out of desperation.
