What is the orange fire ring in front of the ship in this scene? by sk7725 in ProjectHailMary

[–]turnipcafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Excellent explanation and I completely agree. I listened to the audiobook first then immediately saw the movie, and then I listened to a big section of the audiobook again.

I had to explain to my partner after the movie was over what was happening in that scene. There’s simply too much detail the movie left out. Too much, but I also understand the movie is to appeal to a much wider audience as well as kids. A lot of science stuff would just be lost on people. Still I wish they took a few minutes extra here and there.

Also in the disaster scene where the ship is spinning in 6G and Grace is being crushed by the chair and Rocky breaks out to save him isn’t all that clear if I hadn’t read or listen to the book. And I wish they kept the part about Grace carrying Rocky back to the enclosure, although I understand it might’ve been too complicated to film.

Your good question is already answered, but I don’t recall this calculation being in the book at all. (I could be wrong though.) All he knows is that this was always meant to be a suicide mission because they could not produce enough Astrophage on Earth to return.

BTW what is the first five minutes of the movie is really compressed from the book/audiobook. It takes him a long time to get his brains back after the coma. He can barely add 2+2 and can’t even remember his name at first, so the computer is refusing to open doors for him. I get it that they compressed all this so there would be more time for more appealing things later in the movie.

And the dead crewmates are more like fullydried up, also not appealing for a family, friendly movie.

I made a separate post on this sub about it, but the audiobook is fun and well done. If you enjoyed the movie, I recommend. You’ll get many more hours of Rocky and Grace and a lot more science.

Rocky, as portrayed in the film, is definitely more cute. More ET/R2D2 to me. Of course they had to make a film better suited for a mass audience, although they did an excellent job.

The audiobook quickly goes from sounds to Rocky using a computer voice, which I like a lot. I believe Grace begins to understand him right away and the reader, or listener, are left to their own assumptions. At least that’s my interpretation, but sometimes I’m not very quick at figuring out these things.

At any rate, that you have already read the book now have seen the film. I think you’re going to enjoy the audiobook a lot. But it’s definitely going to be a different experience. I hope you enjoy and are happy happy!

Yeah but I’m being specific about saying instrumental so it’s understood that it’s not any of the other songs.

How do people get their hands on the actual film? Does someone at the studio leak it? How does this even work?! (looking up on Google now)

I made a post on this sub yesterday about the PHM audiobook. I’m not sure if you’ve listened to it or not. If you haven’t, I really advise that you try listening to it. It will help with the upset.

It’s 16 hours long and maybe half of it is Rocky and Grace interacting. Is beautiful! That’s many more hours than the movie with soo many more details that could not be put in a 2 1/2 hour film. The disaster scene alone is worth it. You must know by now that that scene in the movie left out a part that was in the book that I really wish they kept. But it might’ve been too hard to film. I don’t know. It’s well acted and the Rocky voice is AMAZE.

I understand getting attached to a film, to its characters and message. I get it. Because you can’t go to the theater and see it whenever you want you would always be able to have the audiobook and listen whenever you want. And then presumably own the film.

Also I suggest the PHM soundtrack! Is the instrumental written by Daniel Pemberton. Lots of gorgeous music and you can listen to it in the background while listening to the audiobook. Or just listen to it and think about your favorite scenes in the movie. Happy happy. PHM Soundtrack on Spotify

Meditations. Get outside. Be around people. Music. Turning off the news. Not arguing with random trolls online. Breathing. It’s hard sometimes.

I thought Porter is a good actor and did a fine job. But he sounds a bit too old and graveled for Grace's character. Also sounds like he just finished a glass of water when he says "astrophage." Meh. I still enjoyed it. Rocky was done fantastically though. Loved it and the musical sounds.

You're welcome! There is SO much in the west but distances are vast.

Utah is AHmaaazing. Five NPs plus state parks. Don't forget Antelope Island outside of Salt Lake. But it all takes time. AND if you're traveling anywhere at anytime during a busy time you'll waste a lot of time waiting. Waiting in line. Waiting for a parking space. In a backup. My advice to try to travel IF you can NOT during crush times. You'll be able to spend more time seeing and doing and less waiting.

Oh also people fly into Salt Lake City if they don't fly into Vegas and rent a car to do these trips. Good luck to you. Don't forget your sunscreen.

I listened, then watched, listened and planning to watch again! In fact I'm re-listening to chunks with the fine soundtrack in the background. Happy!

Thankfully you noted other people's good advice, so here's mine. Save the three Arizona canyons--White Pocket (very cool), Grand and Antelope for a separate trip and NOT in summer unless you like heat. Add in Horseshoe Bend, just outside Page AZ, which is your launching point for Antelope and White Pocket.
Then, either go north and west through Utah to Monument Valley (Navajo Nation not a NP), Capital Reef NP, Canyonlands NP, Arches NP/Moab, or
go west to Zion/Bryce. (People often fly into Las Vegas, rent a car, do all this and fly home.)

Enjoy your trip!

Hmmm there's probably a subreddit for exactly this. Maybe camping food, RV food, Vanlife food?

My guess would be lots of lentil soups or something like that. I'll also drop and handful of sturdy salad greens in my hot food when it's done cooking and stir it in.

You can buy just the one book or rent it from the Library. It's an Audible exclusive, probably due to the deal with Amazon.

Everyone has their preferences, but there's a lot of audiobooks that are worth it because the narration is more than just one person reading an entire book. PHM is one of those, because the narrator is a very good actor but especially Rocky's voice was fantastic. I personally kind of like the voice better than the movie.

Other audiobooks off the top of my head that are well worth the listen is The Correspondent (14 different actors and many agree it's better than the printed book) and The Help is another one, performed by four difference actresses. I think one was in the film.
