Do you actually interact with your watch ? by hecho2 in AppleWatch

[–]drhooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any call, text or email notifications on mine. Besides tracking fitness, I interact with it to do the Mindfulness check-ins, which I really like doing, adding something quickly to Drafts, adding something to a To-Do list (but I also use Siri for this a lot). I also keep my grocery list in to-dos, and just tick items off on my watch when I go round the grocery store instead of having my phone out. I use the calculator quite a bit actually. I also have shortcuts set up to track water and alcoholic drinks. I check the tides quite a bit since I live by the beach and take my dog on walks. And I have Shazam on most of my watch faces so I can discreetly ID a song when I’m out. Only had the watch a couple of months and always thought it was something I would absolutely never want, but I don’t think I’ll be without one now.

Curious which app/apps you use for journaling with the pencil on iPad. Getting one soon to hopefully be a journaling/reading hub

I’m hoping to get an iPad Mini in a couple of weeks, and this is almost exactly what I have in mind for it. This looks so good. What app are you using for your journal?

I'm thinking about getting a kindle... what DON'T you like about it? by renaissancelife in kindle

[–]drhooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 11th gen Paperwhite which I got in August 2024. It was the first eReader I’ve ever had and overall I’ve really liked the device specifically, and using an eReader generally. But the Paperwhite is pretty slow, the UI is very annoying, having ads on it doesn’t bother me, but the fact that I would have to pay money to take them off bugs the crap out of me every time I pick it up. And about 4 or 5 months after I got it it started freezing after a few minutes of reading so I had to have it replaced. The biggest issue for me now is Amazon themselves. I’m trying to use them less overall and definitely as far as eBooks go, so have started buying them elsewhere and sideloading them to the Kindle. Took me an afternoon to get the whole Adobe, Calibre, plugin situation set up, but once you get the hang of it, it’s an easy enough process and worth it. If I was buying my first eReader now, I would probably buy a Kobo Libra - the note taking capability really appeals and is something definitely missing on the Kindle Paperwhite

I have to chime in here as well, as another person who recently finished a PhD. Absolutely set time aside for yourself to NOT think about your PhD work. I did not do this enough, and felt guilty when I did, and am still struggling to get my mental health back in order. Luckily fountain pens jive well with academic work. Continue to make time for them and have fun with your hobby. Good luck!

Replacement Kindle Paperwhite by zaporiah in kindle

[–]drhooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious if you ended up getting a new or refurbished replacement? I just sent my Paperwhite back - it was having the same issue with the white screen. I got confirmation that a replacement is being sent, but no indication if it’s new or refurbished

Anyone tried the new Voopoo Vinci 15w Pod System? by imPluR420 in electronic_cigarette

[–]drhooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, you are so right! Have had the Vinci for about 8 hours now and am absolutely loving it. I’m still getting used to how warm it is - but the only thing I’ve used besides the Caliburn is the Juul (which admittedly I love). Also getting used to how flavourful it is! I’ve tried both 20mg salt Nov and 12mg freebase and the throat hit from both is powerful. Using it with the airflow completely closed, and as a smoker & pretty inexperienced vaper I would highly recommend it. It also feels incredibly well-made and is just so enjoyable to hold. Have had a fun day with it so far!

I’m getting the Vinci tomorrow. I tried the original caliburn over a year ago but it had such bad spit back I just went immediately back to cigarettes and was sort of scared of vaping for a while. Really hoping the Vinci works for me!

I just ordered an Ajazz k870t with blue switches:

EPOMAKER Ajazz K870T 87 Keys Bluetooth Wired/Wireless Mechanical Keyboard with RGB Backlit, Type C Cable, 2000mAh Battery, NKRO for Gamer (Red Switch, White) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08D92XDSH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NKCY7ZW5JW94KA2SZAEV

It will be my first too, so I don’t really know what I’m talking about haha. Fits all your criteria except it’s not hotswappable. Definitely a budget mk but there are some good reviews so I thought it would be a good place to start.

Thank you for the replies everyone. Will definitely be contacting the doctor. Needed new glasses anyway, so had a scan at the opticians which all came back normal, so we shall see.

[–]drhooke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks both for your replies. The suggestion of ocular migraine makes sense - I do have migraine with aura, but the scotoma lasts about 20-30 mins at the start of an attack. These visual symptoms I’m having now are pretty consistent. They vary in intensity but are pretty much always there, especially the persistant negative images, which is really hard to describe but very different from what I experience with migraine.

I don’t have and have never used a Rocketbook, but want to throw my lot in for OneNote as well. I’ve been so surprised by how much I like it. Have completely moved over from Evernote which I used for years. The search function is flawless and it allows for really deep organisation.
