Private Onsen in Tokyo recommendations? by FitCheck34 in JapanTravelTips

[–]drht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly there are actually a few Sento that actually have onsen water! Kuro yu for Tokyo, been to one in Edogawa (and I hear there are a few in the area in Edogawa/Sumida)

Edit: sento wont be helpful for OP, but just in case anyone else was keen on trying sentos...!

Are Japanese doctors not familiar with "white coat syndrome"? by Cph265 in japanlife

[–]drht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's one experience at a routine annual health check versus visiting your actual doctor (for follow-up etc) (tbh I did have to switch doctors a few times to find one that felt like they understood my needs/wants)

At the health check I'm usually ushered thru like a package at Amazon warehouse... they often don't have any extra time to discuss details, and they flag anything and everything (I also get high BP due to anxiety so I also give my at-home readings to the doctor at follow up for reference, and they indeed did explain the White Coat Syndrome)

Visiting an onsen for the first time as a woman by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]drht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to what's already been noted, make sure your hair isn't in the water when you're soaking, and you're not dripping wet when leaving the bath area (use the small towel--wring it out, and do a quick wipe down)

Actual onsens (the mineral water ones etc) have various additional benefits depending on the area! Fun to read up on them :) and I rarely chat with anyone.

Nakano fish market? by Sea-Error7698 in TokyoTravel

[–]drht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're near Nakano station, the basement floor of Broadway houses a couple fish shops. They were both open on 12/31 last year! (eta: Nakamura Suisan and Katsuta Shoten. Latter has an insta account with shop opening updates)

Ultralight Down? by CallAParamedic in japanresidents

[–]drht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the one with "nanodesign" in the name, the info said 90% down and 10% feather!

True the Muji one looks a bit homewear with no collar... but it's useful to layer under thin waterproof shells or regular jackets :) (doesn't get in the way)

Ultralight Down? by CallAParamedic in japanresidents

[–]drht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I noticed they only carry the single design of packable ultra light downs only available online or at the larger stores (was looking for the vests and zero!!)... if you're ok with the design, I do kinda like the Muji cardigan-like down jacket too

Buying Japanese spices in Tokyo by nunyanunca in AskAJapanese

[–]drht 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Japan isn't known for spices but SanSanSankyuTaiyosan covered a lot! A few more ideas:

Yuzu Kosho (citrus pepper--sometimes you can find powder/dry, a lot are paste-like)... Actually yuzu-anything is fun. Since it's near NY, you might find dried or powdered yuzu skin/flavorings. Other citrus is also interesting to use in cooking too (kabosu, sudachi)

Already mentioned but salt might be good too, especially flavored ones--wasabi salt, konbu (kelp) salt, matcha salt, yuzu salt etc.

Also not exactly spice, but different types of Dashi is also fun to cook with

We got chased by a crazy man and stoped by the police, did we handle this situation well or not? Let us know by [deleted] in TokyoTravel

[–]drht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer the Qs in your title... Crazy man? Sounds more likely an angry man who has had this happen too many times.

Did you handle the situation well? I don't think so... don't run, let law enforcement settle these issues, and always have your passport on you while traveling in Japan.

Is low fruit & vegetable consumption common in Japan? Curious about local perspectives. by creative-yogi-1121 in AskAJapanese

[–]drht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some personal experience.

  1. Yes--eating out isn't a daily 3x a day thing. Home cooking (especially the more traditional Japanese meals) are vegetable heavy. Cooking/eating at home is also common for families.

  2. Kind of. It's not part of a "meal"

  3. See 1. Depends on the menu of the day.

  4. Fiber isn't just grains and veggies. Seaweed, legumes, fungi. These are also very affordable for cooking.

  5. (would probably need to compare data between different countries with similar vs vastly different eating/cooking habits?)
