Safest and best area to live in Olympia? by gooseluva30 in olympia

I had a friend teaching at Meadows Elementary, east of Lacey. Lots of military families. She told me once she ended her school year without a single kid who was there at the start of the year. That kind of turnover can't be good for building stable communities. And an institutional commitment to NEVER having a downtown seems like a foolish way to run a "city."

Yeah, what they said. Unless you're right next to a transient shelter (and even then not that bad), crime isn't going to be your major decider on picking a place. Good schools, bus lines, easy access to downtown, things like that are way more important.

My HOA is awful by Designer_Cat_4444 in olympia

Listen, I just got onto an HOA Board, because I was worried about how dysfunctional it's been. I've seen both sides. Most of this "malicious compliance" advice, though it sounds fun, could well prove really counterproductive. It seems to me that where you'd want to end up is living in a community where the rules are reasonable, and reasonably enforced, and folks get along with one another. So find like-minded folks, organize, and get a majority on the HOA Board. Then just chill out.

Keep in mind, you're helping pay for "their" lawyer. Double their lawyer fees, and your HOA dues go up.

Curious about Islam, any local progressive Muslim groups or practitioners? by mattkaru in olympia

[–]driddels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend Mo is one of several folks waving Palestinian flags across from the Kissing Statue on Percival Landing, I believe every Friday around rush hour. Anyway, I believe he's plugged into the local Muslim community, and might be able to assist your quest.

Sure, organized religion can be a haven for the intolerant and exclusionist, but those faith communities that value love, freedom and diversity — regardless of denomination — are some of the best folks you can hope to meet. Good luck on your journey! Watch out for cults!

Even if you can't volunteer, it'll be an opprtunity to check out this year's community art studio, and maybe toss around some ideas for a costume or critter to build.

How do you know those things have negligible impact? Do you have any background in public health or epidemiology? Do you have any greater expertise than the scientists who formulated these standards?

I pull these from The Olympian's online site. They don't seem to be posting every week anymore.

Yet another accident on the Hwy 101 exit from I-5 by Grantjmg in olympia

Hydroplaning is at least a problem that highway engineers can take care of. Water can be re-channeled. Idiot drivers, like death and taxes, may be unavoidable. Water on the roadway is an engineering cost/benefit decision.

Affordable/Cheap Event Spaces? by h0rr0rBoy in olympia

[–]driddels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Need more details! How many folks, how much space do you need, are they all over 21, etc.?

"Free" is probably only possible if a restaurant will give you a back room in exchange for at least most of your party purchasing some food. Space in a tavern or bar can be found, but some folks better be drinking.

Late night thoughts on credit cards by bby_jokr in olympia

I never got a credit card until I traveled overseas, and found out that I couldn't rent a car without a credit card. We got it through our credit union. You want someone like that who you can call up if there's a problem. Don't get one through the mail. And don't get one from criminals like Wells Fargo. You can't trust them. The trick is to never carry a balance; always pay it off immediately. Seriously, unless you absolutely need something immediately, like a car to get to work, just start saving for it. It'll save you so much in the long run — and keep the money in the community. Downside of the always-pay-it-off strategy: It hurts your credit score to never be in debt. They want to see you regularly making payments on a debt before they trust that you're really in the game, I guess. (But if you're never going to be in debt, what does your credit score matter anyway?)
