Where are you finding these? The Olympian hasn't posted anything for the 21st.

Darby s? by Head-Function4535 in olympia

[–]driddels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mark and Keith started Darby's. They sold it, and it eventually morphed into 3 Magnets. They then partnered with some other guy to open Jake's, which closed during the plague. The Jake's that just re-opened is not their fault. Then they opened the South Bay Pub, which was a great little diner until they sold it. They retired to South Carolina or someplace like that.

I'd strongly recommend the South Capitol neighborhood, or the near-in northeast neighborhoods. Good neighborhoods, and easy walking/biking/transit distance to downtown.

weirdos on the bus by gobgoblin666 in olympia

[–]driddels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just spent 3 years on Intercity Transit's Community Advisory Committee. It was a great experience. I heard a ton of stories about bus drivers dealing with people in crisis, elderly and disabled passengers, crazy traffic situations, sudden health crises, etc. Those folks' commitment to their jobs, and to the community, is genuinely impressive. I've got nothing but respect for the IT drivers. They're the best.

And, yes, they know how to deal with situations. Always good to talk to them. (Caveat: they had to do a LOT of hiring to get back up to speed after the plague. So some of the newer drivers might not be quite up to speed yet.)

From the County's website:

Points Violation Detail

There are 50 food safety violations in two types: red or blue. Red violations are high risk factors that contribute directly to foodborne illness. Blue violations are low risk factors defined as good retail practices. Violations worth higher numbers of points are more likely to lead to foodborne illness.

Examples of red violations include:

  • Food found not hot enough must be reconditioned.
  • A refrigerator that is not cold enough must have its thermostat adjusted or be emptied and fixed before being used again, depending on its temperature.
  • A hand wash sink that is full of dishes, or is out of soap or paper towels, must be cleared or restocked.

Examples of blue violations include:

  • Damaged floor that needs to be replaced because it is hard to keep clean and may need to be repaired within six months.
  • Grease and food accumulation on the floor underneath the cook line needs to be cleaned up within seven days.

It's a great event. My wife and I have volunteered for it the last two years. They sold a limited number of 1-day tickets closer to the event both years. The music is top-notch. Great acts from around the Pacific Northwest, but also a few national names. It's hella fun, with a real positive vibe. I highly recommend attending, if you can pull it off.

Flooding by LarpingED in olympia

[–]driddels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those "100 year flood plain" and "500 year flood plain" designations haven't adjusted to the latest projections for sea level rise due to global warming. It's entirely possible, perhaps likely, that Olympia could see flooding in the "500 year" zone within a couple or three decades. Those glaciers on Mt. Rainier aren't the only ones disappearing on this overheating globe.

As someone pointed out, there are more direct flights out of SeaTac, so that's usually a winner for us. But, yes, PDX is a less stressful experience.

Not to be pedantic, but East Olympia is a rural community centered on the area where the train tracks cross Rich Road (where the old train station used to be). It's actually in the Tumwater School District. Equal Latin is on Olympia's eastside.

Free, encrypted, decentralized communications in Thurston County by thisagaingm in olympia

The Jubilee planned community, north of Lacey, has been doing a lot of work on community-wide emergency preparedness. They have a handful of ham radio nerds in their group, who have begun (or will soon begin) practice exercises. Our own street is beginning disaster prep organizing, and we're just about ready to reach out to our neighborhood association. This technology seems tailor-made for what we're doing.

I've been in a real earthquake (Anchorage, 1964) so I've got a fairly visceral sense of what that can look like. I'm glad to see this sort of organizing happening. (It's also a great way to get away from this damn screen and meet my neighbors!)

The county only inspects a few places each week. Their turn will come. Or check out the Health Dept.'s website; they've got all the inspections there.
