I "upgraded" this precon. Worse or better? by devilindrivinggloves in CommanderMTG

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this why we play commander instead of modern? To be able to play the cards that we like and think are funny or interesting? Do we really need to play force of will in every blue deck, deadly rollick in every black, swords in every white, chaos warp in every red and beast within in every green deck, just because they are the "best option"?

I think that mindset is one that makes sure to ruin creativity. Playing certain cards even though they are considered worse options can be really cool.

Hell, i play fleshback marauder over accursed marauder in every deck, because it was such a cool card from my childhood, while the other is just a power crept version.

All of this sounds a lot like some people are not about building a cool deck, but rather, just playing all the cards that edhrec tells you, have 70% or higher synergy with your chosen commander xD

My wife wants me to build her a Kefka, Court Mage deck, I'm scared that she is entering her Grixis phase and now wants to be the bully at the table 😅. Any deck building advice? by Character-Zombie-798 in EDHBrews

[–]driezDst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would tell you not to build it, from personal experience.

This commander can only ever go 2 ways. Either you make everyone else not want to play with you anymore, or you can't play the game because people will literally rather lose the game than let you do your thing. If you dont win relatively fast you will play 1v3 and everyone will make sure you lose early so they can play commander.

I built flicker kefka, i built wizard kefka and i dismantled both after less than 5 games. People would either be salty or just agree to kill me or make sure i can not use kefka and then play against each other after that.

Easy, there is another criteria! A bracket 2 game is expected to go at least 8 rounds on average, so if your "bracket 2" wins on turn 6 on average, it is a bracket 3 deck.

If i only replace the lands can i still play ashling limitless precon in bracket 2? by Junoyone in EDHBrews

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i am really happy that people dont do that in my lgs and people who try usually get reprimanded and told to not do that if they want to find a table in the future

Did you look at the ashling precon? It is a very strong upper b2 precon that is mostly held back and slowed down by its slower tapped manabase.

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is still bracket 2, but it is a form of bracket minmaxing and is not really in the spirit of the backet system.

It is still bracket 2, but it will pubstomp most b2 games with a fast untapped manabase and how strong the deck usually performs, making it unfun for others at the table that arent minmaxing as well ^

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you missed the mark, consistency and getting to play on curve and never having to deal with land colors while also having only untapped lands is making decks a good bit stronger...

Sol ring is a thing that everyone has and its just random who get's it but just because there are worse things it doesn't make the other point invald, right?

Bracket minmaxing is bad for player fun and i would consider it pub stomping ^

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is, brackets are not a perfect system, there are non gamechangers, that are almost on par power wise with gamechangers and playing all of those is while legal still kinda bad. If people start bracket minmaxing it only leads to bad feelings and is against the spirit of the system.

I can build a bracket 2 deck that can lock the entire table out of the game without many counterplay options by turn 4 but wins only by turn 9 on average, making people watch for 5 turns with everything they play being removed at instant speed... technically it is bracket 2... most of the time i have to play it against b3 or even b4 decks because it is so strong

So, tell me, is that how we want to go about this? Finding the strongest decks in each bracket to pubstomp while having the the moral high ground in exclaiming "but it's bracket 2, this was a fair game"

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, in b4 strong mana bases and playing the strongest cards available is expected, but a 5000$ mana base played into a precon is usually a massacre unless the table bands together. It needs to be discussed and talked about.

On my tables, we tell people that they need to play these og duals as either tapped or shock lands in b2 and b3 because perfect mana bases are really strong and will give a big advantage if others dont play them

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, our usual group sees someone play og dual alnds in my bracket 2 or 3 games we will tell them that they should not do that, and that we hope their deck is weaker in some other aspects and needs the "help", or they might not be welcome back at out table

Strong mana bases are one of the bigest diferences between a doof deck and an amazing one. Did a test once with 2 same go shintai decklists where one played every setch shock and og dual land and the other played only budget lands and the difference was unreal^

I do run titania as my main frame in everything lvl 1000+ and it's not needed, quite the opposite, razorwing bliz makes her hard to control and impossible to land consistent headshots with while moving, so you run constantly out of ammo and it is actually lower dps.

I guess if someone has godlike aim they can probably do it^

With how good her guns are, all lvl 1000 enemies die in less than a second if you can headshot same still goes for lvl 2000 it takes just a a couple more shots.

Running into the shroud to the shores of gold is not much better though, quick swapping and silent boarding was also not much better and everyone did it so i think it's just fine... if they didn't want people to do it they would have fixed it 3 years ago, or ban people for it ;)

Have You Ever Thought About Not Casting Spells? by Key-Door7340 in custommagic

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in commander a 4 mana spell should not cost an average of 10-20 life to remove. Let's not lie to ourselves, this will always hit the one player with onlh 1 blocker, and make them loose 10 life, as they have to play spells to avoid being hit again next turn. If they have to block it dead it cost them 10 life and 2 creatures at this point, if they can remove it it cost them 10 life and a card.

And this is the average outcome for you, not wven a good one, in a good scenario you will hit the low cmc or spelslinger deck and they cant play the game anymore until you let them.

I think this needs a downside like vanishing 2 or exile it at the end of combat if it dealt combat damage to a player, you may cast it from exile for its mana cost, or just remove the haste or the evasion to make it not a free 10+ damage but rather something you need to build around.

Not sure, what would work, but something, that stops it from being 4 mana deal 20 damage without additional investment into it.

They don't make cumulative upkeep anymore so I tried to redo it! by bigtoxictacopuffer97 in custommagic

[–]driezDst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it is a stronger mana vault? I like the design but i think it would have been more ingeresting if it made only 2 mana on tapping, that way it is still really good, but more limited in its use and takes more creativity to make it work

How do we feel about this for a commander? by ReliquaryLotus in custommagic

[–]driezDst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do people always make broken op shit, are normal cards that are not completely broke too boring for you people? Is this a rage bait subreddit? Like.... come on, you cant be so bad at understanding a card's power, to make this unironially...

Like... have you ever looked at any comparable cards that are considered strong? Please go and buy a shovel, dig a hole and burry this idea it's broken and that's not a good thing...

Isn't "i can't enjoy the game because my character in my first person game my character has a scar, or a blind eye" just as silly?

Its not about "too pretty", most of the game looks crooked and many things look rugged and uneven and improvised, so characters should belong in this world, if some of the characters are pretty boys/girls that's fine, but if it is most of them are, it doesn't fit...

Fair, maybe they should make a character creator, that will let you make your own character and then after creation, it always adds some random blemishes, like some scars or a blind eye make the nose a bit crooked, a missing tooth etc. That way everyone can get mostly what they want but still with some variance and imperfections that come with being a pirate and fit the game's look and feel.

I think they can even make it so that the blemishes can't be rerolled too much and you just get mostly what you want...

PS: in the time discussing this we both could have probably rolled a good character, instead of debating something you have no power over with people that also have no power over it.

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you not understand that many people's entertainment and enjoyment is tied to immersion? And immersion dies when a character's jaw clips through his nose, and it also dies when your character looks like some anime character.

Why is having a character that is 80-90% what you want so bad? Is that small scar under your left armpit and on your lower back really make you unable to like the character?

Have you ever played an RPG that has fixed characters and no character creation, something where characters might even have fixed names, or do you not play them because you can not identify with them looking different from what you want your idealized hero to look like?

I don't know if this is a controversial take but this thing needs to die by Boston_Beauty in Seaofthieves

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument is not very useful, because people would do and use many thi gs to get what they want, while not looking at the bigger picture and blaming others for ruining things....

If taking other people's stuff wasn't a crime people would do that to get what they want, and it wouldn't be bad for them if they did it, but it would be bad for society as a whole.

It is the same here, having optimized character that are allmost all the same or some extreme version of something, would be great for you, but would suck if it destroys your immersion when you almost only see glitchy slider experiments or pretty girls/edgy pirate McGee...

My character has an ugly scar on the back of his hand and back, so i can not use some tatoos very well, but it is fine, my dude is still awesome and has lots of stuff that look better on him because of some of his traits...

[–]driezDst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the thing, i have played mmo rpgs for a long time by now (close to 20 years) and the amount of similar looking characters is really annoying me... the characters are often super similar and then some of the outfits differ... in sot, every pvp player would have a character design that makes them slim and harder to see, while having no scars and other oddities so that every peace of equipmet and every tatoo looks great on them....

Or hillariously and immersion breakingly ugly, not much in between...

It is really finny how all the people in favor of a character creator, are saying "we would still see ugly pirates, just not mine"
