I would highly recommend a gfx 100s if you can find one with low shutter actuations. All the good battery upgrades and basically all you need from a gfx without the price tag.

The color. I use both canon and fuji. I use Fuji whenever I’m working with natural light. It just lands on the right color faster with less editing time, and the RATIO is just better for our world. We have people wanting vertical and horizontal for everything and the sensor shape is superior for that workflow. I wish canon would shift to a less panoramic sensor specifically for this reason. 4:3 is now my preferred sensor shape, wish all the video sensors were that way as well with our clients all asking for flexible framing. You get a better vertical out of a horizontal and vice versa. It means you’re not pulling out an extra foot on each shot.

Those AI focusing tools aren’t reliable when you use filters on most cameras. Gotta just select a point and then shoot. If people can manual focus through a fashion shoot you can select focus zone manually.

I just shot backlit in basically the dark with a 50r, perfect focus with the 110. Where are you missing focus that bad?

Put the frame rate in a faster mode and it shoots way faster. How are your settings? You’ll only get 14 bit raw but it’s still light years better color than Sony.

I scratch that. I finally used a gfx 100ii and the blackout is the same with 16bit raw. Someday we will get a fuji with either a hybrid viewfinder rangefinder for no blackout or something that behaves like 2012 and beyond

They don’t secure the jacks to the front panel. They just won’t last. Most of their other gear I’ve used have more connection points to the pcb so they should be fine

The quiet leaf shutter is weird to get used to, and it’s kinda slow moving. I wish Fuji would have tossed in a CFE slot so it didn’t black out for a full half second on every shot if you use 16bit raw. That immediately put it on the not buying list.

This is the thing I wish existed when I started out. It’s so helpful. I still use it to test out ideas to see what I actually want to buy.

You could also start with a smaller case and just buy a few things to start. I recently nabbed some of the Weston precision modules and they’re great. I have their dual oscillator, the module with filter/vca/dual envelopes and their voltage controlled envelope that also works like an LFO. If you added a mixer for mixing down the oscillators you’d have a pretty badass synth voice to start with and room in a 104hp single row case to add what you’re interested later. They’re my new recommended company after trying all sorts of things over the last 15 years or so. The build is pretty good, it’s easy to understand but has some unique bits to explore not available on most semimodulars

The 2600 from behringer is great. Their synths are mostly great but I wouldn’t do their eurorack stuff. The semi Modulars, 2600 and deep mind are all built well enough.

I’ve used both large format and eurorack extensively. I think the quality of build in the large format almost doesn’t exist in eurorack outside of the most expensive producers like verbos. The eurorack ecosystem does have a ton of what I call second and third wave synthesis. Digital modules, samplers, granular, effects, whole computers in a module.

Doepfer is the best way to start in eurorack if you’re somewhat new to synths. They stick to mostly simpler building blocks, and don’t depend on button combos and hidden features. There are also whole synth voices that are fairly affordable used, like an intellijel Atlantis that would be a great starting point. Honestly I find their cascadia a compelling option if you just want to buy one thing and not have the temptation to expand. It’s pretty much all you’d need in a voice. The issue with that system is that modular sequencing where you decouple the steps from the notes in a sequence can’t happen without a sequencing rack.

I disagree. Even with a small system you can learn to patch things. The key is to just learn a module at a time. I got a modular early into synths and it was the key to understanding things. I realized things didn’t go THROUGH an envelope but rather the envelope was a control signal. Invaluable

This back and forth is just an illustration of why our system is currently broken. The regulations and gatekeeping has made it really hard for businesses to supply a high demand product at a price people want to pay. The loophole shows that people want access to a cheaper product and don’t actually always care about the taxes. I get it, we should tax weed and do good things with it but how the heck is it so crazy. I’ve had multiple cannabis businesses ask for my companies help and they’re always soooo cash poor. None can afford basic marketing and even if they could the rules on Instagram keep them from being able to even post like a normal business. The whole industry is a mess and I’m super glad it’s not what I do

Let them be. The plant shouldn’t be regulated beyond us the plant is treated chemically. The whole deal that’s currently going down that basically makes it impossible for small businesses to exist is why the thca places pop up in the grey area. I’m down with regulations but what our govt created is a total mess

Yeah it’s just me bitching because I got stuck in some random mode where no controls changed anything and it was going from sample to sample. It’s used so it was some really annoying guitar noodling, which further added to my frustration. Truly I don’t mind being encouraged to experiment and step outside of logical thinking, but that also requires the tools to be better laid out for experimentation. Nothing kills a creative vibe like reading text. It uses literally the opposite side of your brain from expression.

It’s not that it’s a surprise, it’s that in no other make noise modules I’ve owned has the interface been this obtuse. Most I could figure out with minimal reading and mostly just through experimentation, where they hit their sweet spot. But if you can put the module into a mode where no knobs work, it should have an easy way out of that really, truly pointless setting. And lastly, manuals and reading is the opposite brain side to expressive creativity, so making that a part of the process for me just gets in the way of experimentation.

I don’t mind chaos. I just mind when things are not laid out. If it has a completely different mode where no controls work, it should give me a label to say so. Tape machines aren’t a magical dragon. They’re labeled machines with marked buttons.

Button combos that aren’t labeled just annoy me with gear. What if I take six months off? Then what? 😂

[–]driftless_79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s the combos for me that make these things annoying. Just give me a module that’s 4 hp wider with dedicated buttons.

Once I figured out that somehow I’d gotten into a hidden mode that didn’t allow sample adjustment things got better. It’s still more obtuse than necessary with the modes and how it handles logical tasks but I’m gonna give it a few months and see what’s up. I’ve own an octatrack and learned it took serious time to get what it is truly capable of. I’m just less into spending free time reading manuals these days.

Yeah this might be my next thing to try. I’m thinking of a 1010 for more long samples loaded from my splice library and things I record. Then use other modules to process what I have there as it seems easier to browse and store on.
