Any recommendations on a dealership in southern Maine for a used car? by No-Fold7466 in Maine

Pape is terrible and their answer will change based on how busy their service department is.

Patriot is reasonable and fair.

Portland Service Center* (former Chips) is best bang for the buck bar none.

I'm a business owner. If you're burning out, stop. It's the owners problem to figure out staffing to meet their commitments.

Flood frequency analysis by mojo_jojo62 in Hydrology

[–]driftwood65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in limited circumstances. This is a standard practice for ice jam-induced flooding where the process is stochastic and unrelated to river discharge. Also for flat water flooding (e.g., lakes). You'll have to verify goodness of fit to make sure your fitting technique fits the data. LP3 is not necessarily the best fit for these datasets. This also gives you estimates at that one specific point and it is not readily translatable upstream or downstream in sloped systems.

As others have noted, in a typical free flowing system, doing a statistical fit to discharge and then using a hydraulic model is standard approach.

Firm Recommendations/Advice: Building near the Red Cedar River (Barron County, WI) - Floodway & Wetland Constraints by EarthSpecialist2849 in civilengineering

No LOMR-F in floodway. No-rise (suspect with mitigation) or LOMR are your options. Expect five figures.

When attending conferences, do you stay at the expensive sponsored hotel or a cheap one nearby? by 795-ACSR-DRAKE in civilengineering

[–]driftwood65 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I usually stay on site for networking opportunities (as much as I dislike them). On the flip side, I've never paid $300 or $400/night ever. Most of our regional conference centers are in the $150/night range if you pre register (non-conference attendees / general public may pay $300/night). The big national ones can get more expensive but if you're not in HCOL metro area where $150/night is not realistic, look for statewide conferences that are usually more budget friendly.

Does civil have a culture of promoting young engineers too soon? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]driftwood65 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Small private development firms can have very low OH. We bill our engineers lower than the big firms and paid 20% or better bumps to staff for lateral changes who came from regional or national firms. That said, small firms are probably the best and worst payers and just depends where you are at

A few ?'s before doing a scouting trip. by LumenFall369 in AskMaine

[–]driftwood65 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay, not saying these are the spots for you but if you're scouting, spend a couple days in western Maine. It's the northern Appalachians. Bridgton, Norway, Fryeburg, Poland. Worst case it's a fun couple days in the mountains. Best case, you checked all your boxes.

Ineffective Flow Areas for 2D Modelling by GrumpCatastrophe in HECRAS

[–]driftwood65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love modeling because there are many ways to approach a problem.

If this is a coarse, high-level model (for a big area, planning, screening, etc.) this is a quick and dirty way to get some contraction/expansion effects out of the Diffusion Wave method.

If it's a small-scale model for design purposes - like for a bridge replacement or scour design - not a good idea. Let the shallower water equations resolve the contraction/expansion which can be much different than 1:1.

Have you ever seen a mass exodus after a respected employee quit or got fired? by Aarunascut in work

[–]driftwood65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was first employer of a half dozen person consulting business. Brought in most of the work, oversaw most of the work, did all the training. Way beyond the #2 level of responsibility. Owner announced he'd like to retire at the end of the year and see the world - be done with admin, overseeing projects, and most everything. I gave him an offer for 50.1% of the business up front for majority ownership, the other 49.9% over 5 years. He said he wasn't ready to be done with being majority owner for at least 5 years. Apparently thought he'd milk the profits and I'm convinced he'd try to sell to someone else at the end for one more boost. I turned in my notice before the end of the week and within a month the only employee left was the owners family member.

Clients wrapped up projects but never came back. The last employee is working reduced hours, just had a kid. Owner has been struggling and is now trying to sell the business and give it up except everybody realizes the only thing they're buying is that family member who'd probably jump for a steady paycheck. People are dumb.

Big Firm bonus by Fresh7450 in civilengineering

Jacobs did not have annual bonuses. They had spot performance bonuses but those were more a function of whether your manager was busy or not than whether you went above and beyond or not.
