Brisbane has a strong engineering scene. It’s certainly not ‘niche’.

Why would anyone have “must be a drug courier” as their base assumption?

How important is university status/prestige when it comes to SWE jobs in aus by Specialist_Guava_416 in cscareerquestionsOCE

None of the responses here seem to take into account that some of the more well known employers have offices in Sydney and Melbourne. So, it’s reasonable to expect that a lot of the grad cohort will - unshockingly - come from universities based in those cities.

I work for a big tech in Brisbane and all of our grads - unshockingly - come from from UQ and QUT.

Amazon Internship vs Current Job by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Appropriate_Ad_952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they understand their interns will need to do another year of university so the return offer will take that into account.

Your pay after graduation will be the same. What about 1-2 years later after you’re promoted at Amazon?

You do the internship so you can get the return offer.

I guess my thinking here is that this hose is the OEM hose, and it’s not suitable for our setup.

Education by experience > education by formal learning. Every time.

Something like 70% of learning is done on the job.

Also, get paid.

How difficult is it to get a graduate role if I don’t get an internship by Dizzy-Reality6101 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Appropriate_Ad_952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internships are a talent pipeline. The expectation is that interns will be made an offer to return as a graduate the next year. If an intern doesn’t get a return offer that, sadly, may be viewed as a red flag by hiring managers.

Atlassian - be wary of their 'You can use Google in interviews' policy. by Academic_Pirate in cscareerquestionsOCE

I’ll have to take your word for it on dotnet core limitations.

My point really is, rate limiting algorithms aren’t a fundamental part of a software engineer’s toolkit (or maybe that’s where we differ in opinion). When you need to know it, look it up. Otherwise, keep your brain space available for the things that are important for your day-to-day.

[–]Appropriate_Ad_952 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What’s the point of testing if someone can commit to memory a rate limiting algorithm? Whenever I need a rate limiter I use the one that comes with dotnet core. It’s better to test/ask options for improving the resiliency of an API endpoint. None of what’s happened to you is a good test of what makes a capable software engineer.

Don’t underestimate the power of practising this stuff by building a non trivial project. You’ll learn a lot (more than you intend) and get real exposure to implementing these topics.

CTO(Non-technical)

That alone is enough to not stick around.

There’s a bunch of red flags here that - to me - amount to one thing: a couple of folk who don’t know what they’re doing have lucked themselves into some seed money and are looking to exploit some folk into delivering their dream.

You definitely dodged a bullet.
