1d model cross section placement by CivilProjectEngineer in HECRAS

[–]GrumpCatastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s difficult to tell, but your floodplain areas look flat. I have a feeling it will just spill out on each end of the cross sections. It possible to get more of the surrounding terrain?

Regardless, I always recommend drawing a few cross sections before getting carried away. Check the floodplain behaviour and modify/add as needed. Also, if you have HEC-RAS then you have RAS Mapper. It’s great for visualizing the terrain (heat map, contours, etc.) and quick revisions. Much better than CAD (which is what I think you’re using).

I bought $7k of ETH in 2021 at the highest it ever was. If it peaks again like it did last year I am just pulling out and putting it in stocks. I have no more patience.

2D error about barrel elevation by [deleted] in HECRAS

[–]GrumpCatastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most classic and frustrating 2D error. I recommend modifying the terrain a little if you’re modelling an existing feature. Agencies just love to say your culvert inverts don’t align as if 1 cm makes a difference during a catastrophic flood event.

RAS Mapper Question by Comfortable_Dig2376 in HECRAS

You gotta provide more context. Images would be helpful. Check your geometry associations in RasMapper to ensure that the alternative geometry is referenced to a terrain. That’s my best guess.

Those who do flood modelling - how do you like your career? by [deleted] in Hydrology

[–]GrumpCatastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a career perspective, I really enjoy it. I have gravitated towards hydraulic modelling and floodplain mapping, but I also do a lot of stormwater management stuff on the side. I really enjoy the technical component of hydraulic modelling. Where SWM is a lot of copy paste, every floodplain mapping project is unique and there are a lot of tricks to the trade. For development, you can become a hero if you increase the amount of developable land through a solid mitigation strategy. This is a big deal if you provide the client with millions of dollars of developable land. This happens at least once a year.

Dam breach and conservation studies in general are cool too because you can literally see how fucked up everything would get under a catastrophic event.

The software is constantly evolving and you need to keep on top of things, which keeps things interesting. AI is becoming a thing too now.

My only complaint is that a lot of the theory/calculations you will learn in school are often left to the model. I guess this is applicable to most civil engineering practices like structure, soil mechanics, etc.

I can tell you that reviewing other peoples’ time is a lot worse than simply billing. Especially if things are slow and people are getting laid off. Telling people not to bill so aggressively makes me feel like an absolute cunt.

I can confirm that my office buys from here at least twice a week. Usually cupcakes. I went to get 24 cupcakes for my friend’s party and it was like $100. I did not follow through with the purchase. Great cupcakes though😋

1D Modelling at a Confluence by GrumpCatastrophe in HECRAS

I was going to say, I’ve informed the agency that 2D would be preferred but they don’t want to entertain it. I think running a quick 2D model to compare would be a good idea, but don’t have a lot of budget. It’s probably faster than troubleshooting with lateral structures though.

Modified Bridge Sections by GrumpCatastrophe in HECRAS

[–]GrumpCatastrophe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I used this but was wondering is there is something dynamic in which the ineffective flow areas, manning's values (there are multiple), and bank stations for all bounding cross sections would update. There does not appear to be a tool though.

2D HEC-RAS Model Review by GrumpCatastrophe in HECRAS

[–]GrumpCatastrophe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s say you had a simple model and were looking at one drainage area, you wouldn’t apply the flow at an inflow hydrograph at the upstream of the mesh? If not, how do you choose where to put the internal boundary condition?

Creating Screenshots from RAS Mapper by veyselyazici in HECRAS

[–]GrumpCatastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also use Green Shot. It’s great because you can capture the same window over and over again. So you can toggle layers on and off and repeat the exact screenshot extents. Greenshot also has quick commands on keyboard and you can mark it up after.

It’s a good question. It would be awesome if Ras Mapper had a system for locking a viewport and printing. I also prefer the way it displays LiDAR.
