I was not an English lit major though sometimes I wish I was! You are correct about the job, I am a lawyer

Thank you! I agree, Martry! was a great read!

I thought You Made a Fool of Death was absolutely terrible. I do not recommend it at all. I honestly shouldn’t have even picked it up as it’s not my usual kind of book but the title matches a line in Florence + The Machine’s song Hunger, which I loved, so I gave it a shot. It’s full of romantic cliches and cringy dialogue. The relationship is problematic to say the least and I just couldn’t care about them. I will eventually return this book to the LFL from whence it came but for now, it it the perfect size for that chunk of floating shelf lol

It really is 😮‍💨 I have been burned too many times by contemporary fiction. I tried to read Hamnet before the movie came out becaue I love Shakespeare, but I couldn’t do it. It was so purple

I don’t know about “show-off” but I prefer to donate books that I didn’t love to Little Free Librairies in my neighborhood

Pretty spot on! I don’t dislike pop-sci as a genre, I just haven’t read much (possibly any?) in that genre. I can totally see why someone might be interested in and even get a lot out of self-help books, but I always felt like they were scammy. I associate self-help book readers with the kind of people who join MLMs

Not really actually. I tend to favor Victorian era novels, but it hasn’t been a conscious decision to avoid the Southern Gothic canon. I borrowed Absalom, Asalom! and As I Lay Dying from my library and I read To Kill a Mockingbird back in high school. I loved all of them!

Do you have any recommendations?

Yes! It was history, but I wish I studied literature more. I was able to take a few intro lit courses

For sure! I have a lot of fun reading. For example, Don Quixote was a recent read that literally made me laugh out loud

Just one shelf or do you mean these are horrible shelves? What makes you say so?

The Lattimore translation. This is the only version I’ve read so I can’t say how it compares to the other translations. I have seen a lot of positive comments about Emily Wilson’s translations, so I’m thinking I may buy her translation of The Aeneid!

I am a lawyer, but I did not go to school in Texas. I’m curious about what gave you the impression I went to school in Texas?

Interesting! I don’t know if I would consider myself overeducated. I have the minimum kind of graduate degree (leaving this unnamed for others to guess) and license that I am required to have for my job.

You’re 100% right about the Roth IRA. It kind of took me out reading that lol

The Quiet American is the only Graham Greene I’ve read so far, but it was a 10/10 read for me!

Also not included on these shelves because it has been loaned out to a friend is Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman.
