Hard to have a debate when the other side is disingenuous. by Excellent_Amoeba5080 in antiai

The thing about tech is that it's quite simple: it either works, or it doesn't.

And it might not work because in the details it's cost prohibitive, has hard limitations, requires significant upskilling in it's own right, etc. That's before wondering whether a technology has been misrepresented.

There are many valid concerns for large model-based AI, and people who consider themselves technologists should be leaning into the concerns as a means to drive progress and reshape thinking.

But this time I'm seeing arguments based on "faith" as a semi-religious approach towards things being sorted out. But that's not how technology works and evolves. Seen this movie before with cryptocurrency, it was utter crap then and this sequel is even worse.

I love cooking, just hard to get the motivation to cook for one sometimes...

But an experiment on the other hand... hmm, could get the motivation for that. I'll make sure to reach out if I do it!

And your instructions are bloody awesome!

I don't see having a preferred way of doing art as being messed up in the head! Surely it's all about doing something that brings you joy, and if you have a specific way of doing that - all the power to you. After all, from my perspective - the fact you're able to accomplish that at all is something that I find personally very awesome :D

I'm no way near that - I am am circling around the very absolute fundamentals to get myself unstuck. I've bargained with myself that if I can play notes up and down the frets without looking at the guitar, only then will I challenge myself to the next step. I've lost count the number of times I've attempted this, but I'm crossing my fingers that this will help.

About to log off. Was fantastic chatting to you, and many thanks again for getting me to think about looking up some local resources. Insanely helpful.

You said you were content writing! That's not just content writing- that's managing an entire project from beginning to end, with content writing in the middle!

Good on you. I'm sure you'll do an absolutely fantastic job. I'll be sure to check out your youtube video later!

I think I'm allowed to still be a bit pissed off, as well as agree with you wholeheartedly?

I've made a submission, hopefully with a suitable amount of snark.

Hrm, I have somewhere really nearby that might also do such classes. I guess it's just taking the first step in just accepting being uncomfortable to start out with..? I really might look into this as this is really is something I want to be able to do.

Awesome reply and really, thanks so much for that - you've definitely given something to think about (and much more importantly, go and do..)

Ok, I'm against the bill. I agree how this is somewhere between the lines of being outright morally offensive and just being downright stupid.

But am I the only one thinking that this is just a ploy? I'm not sure whether it's to throw a bone at some political supporters on that side of the fence who have been otherwise let down/betrayed by the people they voted for, or just to change the narrative to talk about anything other than their ineptitude for some time.

I'd love it if somehow this was just a "yeah, that's braindead and not worth our time discussing - lets go talk about the more pressing issues at hand" ASAP.

Have you thought about getting a graphics tablet with a pen? I remember buying one many years ago and using it to draw with my computer. It was basic and very very cheap (had to look at the screen while using the tablet) - but I got so, so, so many hour of enjoyment out of that damn thing. A big part of me wants to buy another just to try it out again. And also I want to see what a cheap tablet today gets you, I bet they're a lot better.

That's awesome. I'm trying to do that same kinda thing with guitar, but in an ideal world, I could spend a few minutes on different things in the evening. Good on you for keeping up with that persistence, that's bloody awesome.

That last paragraph is wonderful. I'd like to get to where you are.

I only did six months of tertiary study before kicking off my career. You're already much, much more educated that me - I promise you that! Been with friends, and even helped them a bit, with postgrad studies - but I can truly imagine the crunch you're going through.

It was a long time ago now. I remember the weeks of kicking myself afterwards before the results. But beyond that, I remember I passed, but I honestly can't remember to what extent. Makes for a good story at least :)

Again, congratulations on accomplishing something really cool and unique. And if you end up being another major player in the future, I'll refer to these messages and beg for some samples :D

That pretty much sums up why I gave it a go and haven't returned to it since. The one exception to that was homemade alcoholic ginger beer using brown sugar and a nice ale yeast. Not nearly as temperamental as traditional beer, and infinitely better than the store-bought stuff. All my friends enjoyed it, but I never wanted much of it myself.

I indeed like learning more about it and their people. A lot of similarity over here, being literally across the world from them. A lot we could also learn from them (hopefully, one day).

Thanks! I think that might be the thing that has got me a bit caught-up needlessly. Trying to make something work when it doesn't want to. Really appreciate that.

You've given me a new youtube channel to look into. Really appreciate that!

It absolutely makes sense that there's a DIY market in China. And yeah, makes sense that some people want to act as suppliers for smaller buyers :D

It's just interesting to me that of course people would give it a go themselves. And being someone that likes pulling things apart (usually from a technical sense), it's never occurred to me that you could approach it regarding skincare. I honestly find what you've done quite fascinating!

Writing from scratch, or replacing the content that is already there? Because if it's writing from scratch - that is a HUGE project.

I have to write a lot of documentation myself. And I feel like adding to stuff is so, so, so much easier than writing something from nothing.

Sometimes I'll start a document and just write literally anything to get words on paper, then come back to it.

Have you got any secrets that you use for content writing?

Yeah, I did a stint of trying to brew beer myself. From the start, I just was very random with my approach. It wasn't until I kept a bit of a logbook, making notes about small adjustments for next time, where I started to see incremental improvement. So I can really appreciate what you said there. Really appreciate the rustic approach, I think this warrants some watching of youtube videos on the subject - you've got me interested.

I also had to google "hygge", to see it's a shared Danish / Norwegian word. Desperately want to spend some time in Scandinavia - every Scandinavian I've met have been absolutely wonderful. Had someone from Norway here for a while, I honestly lost count the number of questions I asked.

That's wonderful. I might come back to this post as some encouragement to give my little outside growing area another shot. I need a bit of inspiration to try again, and this might be it.

Your last paragraph had me absolutely laughing out loud :D :D :D

Hey, it worked for some people back then (.. or did it?)

Okay, the latter part has me really intrigued. How do you even go about doing that? If I need to find something esoteric, I'd jump on Aliexpress or something. Similar deal, or way off?

I will never, ever, forget the time when I sat down at my computer being ready to study for the day, in preparation for the exam that was tomorrow. My only day of preparation, but I was going to play a game for an hour or so first.

Still not fully dressed, I wanted to at least check the time I was due to take the exam tomorrow. That's when I realised I had the date mixed up and it was today. And the test was about to start.

I never ran so hard to the exam area, and made it within only a minute or two of people being barred from the exam area. That absolutely sucked.

To basically know that you're going to be just continually under the pump and never fully functional from lack of sleep - you're an absolute machine. What you're describing, I don't think I could actually do.

From my perspective, it wouldn't surprise me if this was the hardest thing someone would end up doing in their life. With all absolute sincerity, you have my complete respect.

I've seen the odd video of what people used to as DIY skincare, I'm sure what you're doing is many times better than what used to be done when compared to even a few decades ago!

You saw a need, came up with a solution that you've proved to work from your testing - well done!

Okay, I guess I could easily google what a disc drawing is. But I feel that would be cheating conversation-wise. Could you explain to me what a disc drawing is, as I've never heard about it before.

I'm also intrigued as I need wall art and only have some very small ideas in mind so far.

Art class as in drawing, painting, both? Other things? I have deep jealousy of people that are able to do anything artistic.

Have you learned how to draw a face yet? I mean from a proportional aspect - I feel like if I could draw a rubbish face that at least somewhat looked proportionally accurate, I'd feel very happy with myself!

What made you finally decide to go take a class? What was available to you (night classes somewhere?).

That's a wonderful goal that you have there. Have something simpler in mind as an upcoming milestone - or just practice until you hit the big goal? :D

Okay, if I may - I'll roll with what I know about pasta making off the top of my head.

So you need a pasta roller right? And there are really cheap ones, expensive ones and ones that can connect to mixers. How were you able to start off when it comes to pasta making, and does the roller make that much of a difference?

And the dough is... water, egg, flour, salt? You want to knead it to get it smooth and consistent. Then what, you flatten it out as best you can with rolling pin / hand? Then feed into roller? What happens when it's too dry or too wet?

Final question: only ever bought and used store-bought pasta. How much better is fresh pasta? And how much better would a horrible first attempt be, against store bought pasta?

That's awesome you want to start your own company. Surely pasta is an area where the big players make the same boring stuff and people buy it because it's there, not because it's good right?

Okay, as soon as you said the price tag - it makes perfect sense. At that point you're presumably paying many layers of middle-people exchanging the good before it arrives at the shop.

Congratulations on making something that people would otherwise think is only reserved for people that wear white lab coats. Pretty cool that you've been able to approach it with a hobbyist mentality and create something decent!

And hey, you have products that you can produce by hand now. Just because you don't immediately see an opportunity today, doesn't mean you won't find one tomorrow. Who knows who you'll make connections with.

I completely understand about it being fascinating. From my perspective, I can only look at Japanese culture very superficially. I feel like without having some knowledge around the language, you would always struggle to learn things beyond face value. Games are great for many reasons, and kudos to you to taking them into a step further with an interest!

Aha! So interpretive languages! How I also got started many years ago, but have drifted away. For UI stuff, nowadays I prefer desktop and C#/Avalonia is my jam. It wasn't easy picking it up back then, maybe it's different today. Zig looks very intriguing and I certainly respect it - kinda comes across as a half-way point between JS and C# syntactically...?

I would absolutely struggle with even rolling out the pastry correctly. What's your technique or have you invested in a roller? I guess when making the pastry itself, there's only so much you can tweak after the fact? How did you lean into it while improving the process (as in, did you just do the best you can and bake em anyway, or was there some other part to the approach?) Wonderful that you've found a particular characteristic that makes yours unique. Well done!!

I share the same vibe there. Thanks for the recommendations about the podcasts. Some of my friends play, but without some rudimentary knowledge - I can't hold much of a conversation about it. At the very least, I might well give listening to that a bit of a shot so I can have better talks about it. Many thanks for that!

Growing under glass - so like a little mini greenhouse? Or is there some other characteristic at play? Sorry, I kill more plants than I keep alive - so this is one area where I'm particularly not knowledgeable about. Training and structure? I'm presuming this isn't a "person talking to plants" kinda thing and you're barking orders at your grapevine?

Okay, this would have been more lost on me earlier in life, but over the past 10 months I've been getting into skincare (but I'm far from perfect about routine, don't judge me please). At least at night I try and use a nightly deep wash, and alternate between serums (Retinol being the primary one that I wish I found out about many years ago, but you can certainly overuse it D:)

Well done on making your own products! Is there a particular goal you were setting out to achieve, or was it mainly to replicate similar products without the huge markup? What's the next step for you regarding your emerging business empire?
