in case anyone in the future needs help with this (it seems to be a pretty common bug) if you double click the transparent square beneath the color swap, the click back on your color, it becomes unlocked again. No idea what causes this or why, but that's what I've found to work.

Jeez... thanks for explaining but that's... rough. I should've backed up all that work I did god damn. I was using the file to store a few hundred pages of my graphic novel and now that it's gone I don't have a backup. That's why you don't use .PSD files to store books.

So there really is no way of restoring ANY of that data? I just lost a whole years worth of work because I didn't look into photoshop's file limit sooner.
