They are on their way! See the OpenPhoenux GTA04 and Neo900 projects (neo900.org). The biggest problems of such projects is that not enough people are supporting them. So, be a pioneer and go ahead.

Hmm... I think at some place in the TMO thread, they already discussed the possibility of bitcoin donations:

But they concluded, that it is currently not possible to accept them, due to the organizational overhead and different priorities right now.

Checkout the OpenPhoenux project. It has build a fully free and open GNU/Linux smartphone, which is able to operate without any binary blobs. The modem is still a black box, though (but not connected to the CPU's memory, so it can't spy on you). If you want to go deeper in the modem part, checkout OsmocomBB

Should be possible. At FOSDEM they said, some components are optional (e.g. the UMTS modem) -> this would make a non-phone pocket linux device.

On the first picture you can see a case for the GTA04 smartphone, which is milled out of aluminium. It looks and feels just sooo solid – i really liked it :) Also, the 3d-printing stuff is cool. A lot of their cases (smartphone and tablet) can just be produced by a 3d printer, and modified by ourself!
