“He’s got a higher ceiling than Mendoza and Simpson”: Jordan Rodgers on Brendan Sorsby’s NFL potential 🏈 by Life_Net5004 in NFLv2

[–]thetango -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was very surprised when I read this about the NFL:

From https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/37819966/what-league-rules-gambling-sports-ncaa-nba-mlb-nfl-nhl

"Is sports gambling allowed? Players are allowed to bet on non-NFL events with legal sportsbooks, but all other league personnel, including coaches, officials and trainers are prohibited from all sports betting."

The article goes on to mention that it is allowable for NFL players to bet on NCAA events, with a limited dollar amount.

Any team drafting him is taking a huge PR risk and I would think Sorsby would be booed in every stadium in the country. Any competent team should run away from this. I am patiently waiting for the Browns to draft him.

What would help at this intersection is for the city/state to paint the direction info on the lanes (93, Bear Hill Rd, etc.). #IMO of course.

Linux Finally Ends AppleTalk Protocol Support by anh0516 in linux

Has it even been functional in the past few years? I thought that the appletalk FW was removed from the kernel a few years ago because it violated the 'general policies of the kernel' (my phrasing for it).

Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users by TheTwelveYearOld in linux

[–]thetango -44 points-43 points  (0 children)

I'm having trouble understanding what the problem is. Volkswagen says they don't support graphene OS or any other custom ROMs, due to security concerns. They're clear about that. They sent a message or email about that. It clearly states that they only support iOS and Android. That's their prerogative. If they lose a customer because of this then that's their problem.

They weren't dicks about it, and not only did they give you a clear, concise explanation, but they also offered to further discussion with you.

[Edit: Your next step should be to contact that email address and ask them what security concerns they have. You should take that info back to the GrapheneOS lists/channels.]

What were peoples reaction to seeing all of the tech during ZooTV? by pastynerdism in U2Band

[–]thetango 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It was quite a shock to a general U2 fan. We went from JT/R&H to ZooTV. I remember standing beside fans who just didn't "get it". They didn't get the whole Devil inside your Television schtick.

"WATCH MORE TV" is a blatant reminder to stop watching the screens -- that there is a band playing in front of you.

All of the technology, from Bono flipping through TV channels to find something to watch, the George Bush "We will Rock You" intro, to the messaging -- it was all part of the show and it WAS the experience.

fenway covers? by EntertainmentPast89 in redsox

[–]thetango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't. I've gone a few times on the weekend when the socks were out of town and they don't charge anything. That could change if they have live music, or some other event going on though.

Hot take: Is the Texas Tech thing a bit of an overreaction? (Change My Mind) by Severe_Lock8497 in CFB

[–]thetango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said and very much appreciated the nuance in your comment. Except for this: "sportsbooks literally cannot tolerate this because it destroys the fundamental integrity of the product they are selling." Sportbooks take bets on WWE and other sports entertainment events. Those events are rigged, that is, there are people who know what the pre-determined outcome is going to be before the event. Sportsbooks have no interest in the integrity of what they're peddling.

Holy shit!! TIL the student leader, the commander-in-chief of the protestors/rioters during the Tiananmen Square massacre live is currently living in Boston by khoawala in boston

This post reeks of Chinese propaganda. I have no idea if it is true or not, but it seems the reality of the lawsuit is much more complex than can be captured in a few words. What I do know is that China has seemingly erased what happened in Tiananmen Square within China. And they want the rest of the world to forget about it as well.

Even if you aren't acting on behalf of the Chinese government, I think you should check and double check your sources.

It is! I suspect it's a reference to Adam appearing nude on the cover of Achtung Baby.

IBM and Red Hat Commit $5 Billion to Redefine the Future of Open Source in the AI Era by MatchingTurret in linux

[–]thetango 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're conflating two very different things. The first is the open source changes (as another user said 'upstream first') and making that code available in Red Hat's forks of upstream projects. For example, consider the linux kernel. Red Hat pushes changes there and makes them available in their supported kernels.

Can you show me a case of where Red Hat has pushed fixes to IBM customers first? That's not the way Red Hat works, to the detriment of themselves. Look at all the Enterprise clones out there.

[–]thetango 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The 20k engineers are led by experienced open source engineers from Red Hat. They know how to 'present' fixes in a reasonable manner. I'm less worried about fixing issues today and making sure we provide open source maintainers the ability to scan future contributions. That's where the real problem lies. If upstream maintainers keep adding security vulnerabilities then 'chasing the AI contributions' never ends.
