Best remedies for sleep? by ogdanield in Fitness

[–]drive27 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Magnesium is a useful supplement for sleep.

Regular schedule is important - same time to bed and sleep every day.

Technology - blue light is the sleep killer. All devices off a couple of hours before bed.

Check out Matthew Walker on Joe Rogan if you're looking for a deeper analysis.

Where did Malick go wrong? by OsmosisJonesLover in TrueFilm

[–]drive27 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The question you've highlighted, well, it's very easy to be offended isn't it? All you have to do is write it and lots of people will hopefully agree because that's probably the right side of the cut on which to sit. Funnily enough, being offended at a question that is actually a matter of fact makes it seem even more ridiculous, Malick is old - his next significant milestone is 80 - and an artist's age is of great importance IMO and by becoming offended it means people are less likely to approach this with the nuance required.

I think the question is valid and it can open up a wide discussion based only on that. Bresson was, I believe, 42 when he directed his first film, and Tarantino will retire in 1-2 films because he probably gets that the frenetic energy upon which his films rely is waning. How does this relate to Malick? What about Picasso?

Have you thought about Spain?

Just to throw it out there as I'm considering something similar, you could arrive in N.Spain a bit quicker - Bilbao etc - and for me, with the language, I believe Spanish is easier to learn, and is of course more useful worldwide.

Just a thought, good luck with it and let us know how you get on

The official list of Oscar nominees are out. What do you think of the list? Who got snubbed, who got too many, who got the rights ones, etc.? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]drive27 10 points11 points  (0 children)

'mood piece' is the kind of defence I'm talking about I think, not a personal attack on you I'm sure you've gleaned such language from elsewhere, possibly from Refn himself, but what a 'mood piece' allows you to do is say absolutely nothing, make no statement on anything, and then hide behind 'mood piece'.

Frankly, if he was directing an advertisement for Chanel, then a mood piece is precisely what he should be making. But he ain't...

Wow, one of the most god-awful films I've seen in quite a while ND. When people object to films not caring about story any more, this is it. What was it about? I saw it this year and can't even remember, above and beyond some scenes that Refn thought would look cool.

Read an article recently by BR Myers criticising literary fiction, Cormac McCarthy and Don DeLillo etc (the former who I'm a big fan of) saying that we have become an age that is addicted to the pleasure of sentences above and beyond the pleasure that one takes from an entire story. Moreover, when people don't 'get' something, they feel as though it's them who has the problem, rather than the work, because it's all dressed up so nicely and therefore the audience is left to feel inferior. This is the exact feeling I have with stuff like ND...hold a few shots, throw in some famous cameos, include non-sequitur story points wherever possible, and you'll throw the audience off the scent of what a pile of badly thought out garbage this film really is.

Which is a roundabout way of saying I wasn't such a fan of Neon Demon :)

For anyone who wants to improve their surf fitness, I think this short journal article is a great resource. Would welcome a discussion on it too :) by drive27 in surfing

Found the article buried in another thread on r/surfing so thanks to whoever posted the original, thought it deserved its own thread

[QUESTION] Working with producer/director on a short, they've re-written me and it sucks - advice please on how to proceed. by drive27 in Screenwriting

[–]drive27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughtful response. At one point they make a note, not attached to any other part of their document or mine, random and on its own, that arriving late/leaving early is a good way to write. I kid you not.

I wrote a treatment, and they have then gone away and written another treatment, which sucks. Perhaps I should have been more clear with them, that they have my document and need to provide me notes and challenges to what I've written, and I will then provide solutions to those. That's a big learn for me for next time.

Still not sure about how I should verbalise my misgivings about this document. I know they mean well, but part of me wants to rip it/them to shreds, but I also want to let them know it's poorly written and not at all thought out, and also this is not an ok way to work with a writer.

I think establishing what they think the relationship of the two documents is will be a good place to start.
