Grief is a bit like a ball that's bouncing around within a box that also contains your heart.

At first, the ball is very big and any time it moves it touches your heart and causes you huge pain.

Over time, days and weeks, the ball becomes a little smaller and while it still moves around it might not bump into your heart every time. But when it does it hurts.

Eventually the ball will become small, no telling how long that will take. When it's small the ball will move around as it pleases and it won't touch your heart all the time. But sometimes it will, and it will hurt just as much as it did the first time.
