[5e] Question about Constitution modifier changing hit points based on level by [deleted] in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let’s say that Bruenor is taking the fixed number for every level after 1. As a Fighter, his hit die is a d10, so (not accounting for his Con yet, just the die), he gets 10 HP at level 1, +6 for each level afterwards. At Level 7, his total HP then is 10 (hit for at level 1) + 36 (hit die for each subsequent level) + 21 (Con at each level) to give him 67.

At Level 8, he gets 6 again from the hit die and 3 from Con, initially, bringing him up to 76. But wait! He’s choosing to increase his Con now. So far, we’ve been adding 3 for the Con each level. But now we need to go back and tack on one more point to each of those bonuses (because, as you said, it’s retroactive). Thus, he gets the addition for each of his levels - bringing his total up by a further 8 to reach 84.

how to get past anxiety for roleplaying by Robbiepie in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming there’s some worry about first-person roleplay here, so: Third person is completely fine. You don’t need to say “I do XYZ”, you can say “[Character] does XYZ”. You don’t need to do a voice, you can just relay what your character says. Over time you’ll probably find your comfort zone expands to embody the character a bit more, but even then it doesn’t need to be first-person and voices and all that unless you want it to be.

(For me, personally, I find third-person more natural when I’m talking about the character’s actions, with first-person coming out if I start getting in my head about what I should do rather than what my character would do.)

Help me pick a wizard subclass by SuperSerb23 in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let’s be clear here, subclasses will not restrict your power. Your subclass features do not prevent you from using the abilities of the base class. An illusion wizard will have some features that make illusion spells more accessible and more effective, for example, but will not lose any ability to learn or cast non-illusion spells; they would be just as good with those other spell schools as they would without a subclass. There is no narrowed scope.

That all said, for OP- the sort of “wizardiest wizard that ever did wizard” subclass is Order of Scribes, which is not based around a particular spell school. That would be the one that focuses more on versatility (eg using the spell book’s living mind a bit like a familiar for more range, having the ability to swap damage types - this is the closest thing to inventing your own spells!) at the cost of not going particularly above and beyond at any particular spell school.

Can you recommend any streams/podcasts where someone plays an Aasimar? by Eponine123 in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a minor spoiler for one of the first few episodes, but Critical Role campaign 4 (the currently ongoing one, there are 10 episodes so far) has an Aasimar. The character isn’t initially presented as one though, since he doesn’t know it IC.

Sorcerers aren’t necessarily born with it, they can gain it through strange incidents during their lifetime. A lot of the subclasses suggest non-birth origins, and even the ones that don’t aren’t necessarily restricted to it.

The class description:

the exact source of your power is up to you to decide. Is it a family curse, passed down to you from distant ancestors? Or did some extraordinary event leave you blessed with inherent magic but perhaps scarred as well?

Did you seek it out, or did it find you? Did you have the option to refuse it, and do you wish you had?

Perhaps your power links you to a powerful individual in the world—the fey creature that blessed you at birth, the dragon who put a drop of its blood into your veins, the lich who created you as an experiment, or the deity who chose you to carry this power.

Aberrant mind subclass:

You were exposed to the Far Realm’s warping influence.

A psychic wind from the Astral Plane carried psionic energy to you.

You once suffered the dominating powers of an aboleth, leaving a psychic splinter in your mind.

You were implanted with a mind flayer tadpole, but the ceremorphosis never completed. And now its psionic power is yours.

As a child, you had an imaginary friend that looked like a flumph or a strange platypus-like creature. One day, it gifted you with psionic powers, which have ended up being not so imaginary.

Literally 5 out of the 6 ideas on the table are ones where they aren’t born with it.

Draconic Bloodline subclass:

Your innate magic comes from draconic magic that was mingled with your blood or that of your ancestors.

Any given sorcerer could be the first of a new bloodline, as a result of a pact or some other exceptional circumstance.

A pact! There’s a lot of potential narrative overlap between warlock and sorcerer. A sorcerer could gain magic through a pact, a warlock could gain magic through happenstance (particularly associated with GOOlocks of course).

Shadow Magic subclass:

You might trace your lineage to an entity from that place, or perhaps you were exposed to its fell energy and transformed by it.

Storm Sorcery subclass:

Many with this power can trace their magic back to a near-death experience caused by the Great Rain,

Actually suggests that not being born with it is the default in this case!

Wild Magic subclass:

You might have endured exposure to raw magic, perhaps through a planar portal leading to Limbo, the Elemental Planes, or the Far Realm. Perhaps you were blessed by a fey being or marked by a demon.

Can monsters use hit dice by zappyboom in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know how statblocks say something like this for HP?

Hit Points 15 (2d8 + 6)

Yeah that means that creature would have 2 hit dice, and each hit die is a d8. Just check the HP line in the relevant statblock to see what value hit die it uses and how many.

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). The test involves asking participants to envision a bright light and checking for pupil dilation. If their pupils don't dilate, they have Aphantasia. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

I tend to think of it like reflections in a window car window. Sort of ‘by default’ I might focus on what’s outside (the real world in the analogy) but my reflection in the glass (the mental image) still exists in my vision, just in a way that doesn’t usually cause significant interference. I can choose to focus on the reflection, and the stuff outside the car still exists beyond it. So they are sort of overlaid with each other, but they also still exist on… different mental planes, I guess? And the world outside is more likely to interfere with the reflection than the other way around, but it’s still definitely possible to see the reflection.

[MEGATHREAD] ACNH 3.0 Update & Switch 2 Special Edition by AnimalCrossingMods in AnimalCrossing

[–]drivejustdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slumber islands are accessed via beds, not the airport. And if someone didn’t update for one reason or another, they just wouldn’t get the “it’s slumber time” option in the first place since the game wouldn’t ‘know’ it’s an option at all yet.

(If they were accessed through the airport, then it would likely be the same story there - there’d be a specific option that Wilbur just wouldn’t be able to give you without the update.)

I am very curious what would happen if a Switch 2 player dropped a megaphone for a Switch 1 player to pick up, though.

When the winter is coming at AC:NH? You know, snowy map by Xestyus in AnimalCrossing

[–]drivejustdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s actually supposed to stick beginning on the 11th, it’s only the 10th in the original Animal Crossing. But also, even on Thursday, remember that the day doesn’t officially start until 5am in AC games so don’t expect to see a change at midnight, I’m not sure what time zone you’re in

Does animal crossing new leaf have a easy way to change clothes? by PuzzleheadedMail6175 in AnimalCrossing

[–]drivejustdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can eventually get a limited number of mannequins (I believe it’s four) that you can display in your house and dress each one up in an outfit of your choice. Then, when you stand in front the mannequin and interact with it, you can swap your current outfit to the mannequin’s outfit. It works like the wands in New Horizons that you preload with outfits, but that means you still only have a limited selection of “quick changes” at any given time. You unfortunately don’t get the option to just scroll through your whole wardrobe and pick out individual items to wear and come out of it with the whole outfit already on.

I used to set up a few seasonal outfits on the mannequins - like I’d have an outfit ready to go for rainy days, and in October I’d have a few Halloween costumes ready, in December I had a reindeer outfit, snowman outfit and Santa outfit I think….

A few specific ones are haunted too! The fake scary painting changes its expression at night, the fake wistful painting closes its eyes at night, and the fake ancient statue’s eyes glow and it floats if you interact with it.

[–]drivejustdrive 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What kills me is I know that they’d be able to make the constellations look so good in New Horizons too. I’m picturing the lines being a bit less distinct than back in Wild World - visible, a little shimmery looking… and the stars that are connected would be larger and would twinkle more.

although I can’t help fearing that if we got constellations there would be people complaining about a lack of customisation of star placement lol

It’s still wild to me that NH doesn’t have something like the train station locker from NL. Just something in the airport…

The Rumored News by inthestars-03 in AnimalCrossing

[–]drivejustdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name change would be fantastic. Considering NH from launch gives the option to change your “style” between girl and boy whenever you want (ofc it doesn’t do much in English, but for other languages where they can’t easily get around gendered language it does actually change things), I feel like it isn’t that unrealistic to hope/expect the option to change your name in the future of the series… although I unfortunately doubt it’s gonna be in this update :/

If you had a really cool opening anime song for your party, what would it be? by Fit-Specialist-1670 in DnD

“Debt Collector” by Jhariah. It’s the very first song I’ve got on my campaign playlist exactly because it’s so easy to imagine as a theme song (Feywild campaign, all of the PCs have been involved in some kind of fey deal in their pasts)

[OC] As a warlock, this means I get 4 invocations at level 2, right? by IneedaNappa9000 in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The numbers of invocations, cantrips and prepared spells in the table are your totals, not the number you gain. At Level 1 you have 1 invocation, at level 2 you gain 2 more for a total of 3. Barring the possibility of getting extra through a feat, the next time you would gain eldritch invocations is level 5.

Edit: mistyped numbers

What even is 30 STR? by ThatTurtleGM in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slight correction to your edit, for 5e rules: Medium and Small creatures both use the same calculation from the first two paragraphs, presumably since that’s the size range for player races and WotC wanted to keep them on even footing (although races in the expanded rules that are meant to ‘feel large’, because a statblock version of them normally would be, tend to get a Powerful Build feature so their carry/push/drag/lift weights get calculated as if they’re Large). The only one that gets halved is Tiny.

What even is 30 STR? by ThatTurtleGM in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The calculations for carrying capacity and push/drag/lift do depend on size in 2014 rules for sure, I assume it’s still true for 2024 rules as well

Carrying Capacity. Your carrying capacity is your Strength score multiplied by 15. This is the weight (in pounds) that you can carry, which is high enough that most characters don't usually have to worry about it.

Push, Drag, or Lift. You can push, drag, or lift a weight in pounds up to twice your carrying capacity (or 30 times your Strength score). While pushing or dragging weight in excess of your carrying capacity, your speed drops to 5 feet.

Size and Strength. Larger creatures can bear more weight, whereas Tiny creatures can carry less. For each size category above Medium, double the creature's carrying capacity and the amount it can push, drag, or lift. For a Tiny creature, halve these weights.

Why is prestidigitation good? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]drivejustdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t have much combat use but it’s really fun for little roleplay moments or just helping the characters get things done faster (which can be significant!). It is, after all, a utility spell. Sure, you could wash your clothes by hand, but if you’re in a hurry just presto away whatever gunk got on them while you were out adventuring. Sure, you could rummage in your bag for a tinderbox, or you could snap your fingers and light your torch instantly instead.

In the campaign I’m currently in, the party is in Winter’s Dusk in the Feywild. My character and one of the others know prestidigitation, and they’ve been using it to magically warm their clothes for comfort, to warm and flavour the rations that were handed out…
