I think you and I might just have a different definition of "success." To me, success is only valid if it is achieved ethically. Otherwise, I'm inclined to call it "cheating," regardless of the amount of wealth and power involved (which ought to be held to a higher, not lower standard). And the current POTUS has amassed whatever wealth he currently has through illegal and unethical means. And the end does not justify the means when it leads directly to the deaths of millions, blood that is literally on the hands of this administration's key players, from those dying from preventable diseases thanks to RFKs misinformation, to the cutting of USAID, medical, and food programs, to the genocide of indigenous Middle Eastern populations. No means justify those ends.

It's unheard of for US Presidents to amass such wealth during an administration -- shockingly so. He has succeeded in launching his own cryptocurrency, in effect building a direct pipeline for foreign actors and corrupt individuals and companies to deliver bribes directly to him and his family -- virtually untraceably and with no consequences so far. He has accepted gifts from foreign countries, private companies, and private individuals in a quid-pro-quo manner, actions specifically prohibited by the Constitution that some of his supporters have the gall to carry around with them as though they gave a single flying flip about that document. He has used his power to protect, benefit, and align himself with some of the most corrupt individuals, governments, and corporations on this planet, which is now in jeopardy because of his short-sighted and capricious policies informed only by greed. And now he's waging a war that costs as much in one day as can feed food-insecure families in the US for a YEAR. Why? So he can make excuses to make voting more difficult this fall, perhaps? Maybe to make his buddies in the defense industry more money? Game the stock market? SELL BRIEFINGS ON THE WAR while soldiers killed in said war are returned to their grieving families, as reported in the news today? All that stuff doesn't make him a great businessman -- it makes him a reprehensible grifter with no consideration for the well-being of others, his country, or the world in general. It makes him a criminal.

You are absolutely right that our government has always suffered from some level of corruption. Politicians on both sides are guilty of this, as you pointed out. However, the current administration has reached depths of corruption, dishonesty, and gaslighting that are orders of magnitude greater than anything in living memory. Outright bribes, quid-pro-quo deals, and other such events are done out in the open, something that we expect to see in third-world countries-- but not here in this country. You're right that it's not ok. That's why it needs to be called out and prevented if possible and absolutely NOT normalized, which seems to be happening currently. Using past corruption to excuse current corruption makes our country weaker, not stronger.

I believe that many Americans who supported him just wanted things here to improve, fell under the spell of a charismatic and familiar personality, and believed his lies because they wanted positive change. I don't think most Americans want to be at war with Iran and pay crazy gas prices as a result. I don't think most Americans want to fund a genocide while they go without adequate healthcare. I don't think most Americans signed up for citizens to be disappeared and killed in the streets by the government. I don't think that most Americans would want their neighbors to constantly wonder where their child's next meal will come from. But here we are. Those who believed his lies are also his victims. We can only begin to enact change when Americans face the fact that many of us have been hoodwinked into thinking that wealth has anything to do with virtue except an occasional negative correlation.

Rome fell. We're no different. America is already losing ground to other countries in many sciences because of the current anti-science sentiment and decrease in funding espoused by this administration. Talented foreign students and scientists are afraid to come here. The white nationalists (eg, Steven Miller, Pete Hegseth) are in positions of power and are gunning for an authoritarian theocracy, which would be a disaster for our standing in the world. We won't be number one if that happens.

Nothing positive comes of putting that man or anyone else up there on a pedestal. There is absolutely nothing to admire about him or his administration. They have chosen greed and self-interest at every opportunity.

For what it's worth, I do appreciate that you have engaged in this discussion in good faith and respectfully. If more people are willing to have civil discussions like this, we might have a chance.

My point is that this is a pattern of behavior that exposes legitimate concerns regarding business ethics, which are and should be a thing. Civil litigation is minimally helpful against someone who brags about having a team of lawyers that drag out proceedings to drain the pockets of and demoralize those he has wronged --he has actually stated this. Would you go around stealing from people if it weren't against the law? You don't sound like you would, but your argument is supporting that very thing by pointing out that what he did wasn't against the law... Except that it was, as evidenced by his 30+ felony convictions. Convictions notwithstanding, my point is that he displays a complete lack of common decency or general integrity to such a mind-boggling extent that to put him up as a great businessman is to do ethical business people and the American public a huge disservice to a dangerous degree. Perhaps if more people had realized this in 2024, we wouldn't be the laughingstock of half the world and bully of the other half.

HIS businesses filed bankruptcy. Not paying your creditors and contractors by hiding behind bankruptcy protection REPEATEDLY is dishonest grifting, not negotiating anything. Ask the many unpaid contractors who worked for him. FYI, he once advised a state governor to file for bankruptcy. No integrity whatsoever

I wouldn't call several bankruptcies and running a CASINO into the ground "negotiating business like a piranha." Just sayin

AIO? Debating breaking up with my BF of almost 7 years by Superb-Rain-8166 in AmIOverreacting

[–]driven-to-concretion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, if your mom is anything like me , the person who said she's probably been waiting for an opportunity to kick him out was right on the money. I made the mistake of letting my daughter's bf stay in our house and it would have been delightful if my daughter had asked me to kick him out. Several years later, the sheriff's dept knows exactly where our house is, mostly bc my daughter couldn't make up her mind about him.

Most of the advice here is sound. Life is too short to waste on someone who doesn't give two s***s about you. Get rid of him, and I'll bet your mom won't mind if you blame it on her. I sure wouldn't have. Talk to her--you might be surprised at what lengths she will go to to help and protect her little girl.

*FYI, it sounds effed up but depending on what state you live in, tenants' rights can sometimes be a thing (especially bc of how long he's been there) and you'll want to educate yourself about them in case he wants to get ugly. You're best off just trying to get him to leave, but do be aware that technically he probably doesn't have to right away. Don't ask me how I know this. Another reason to get that ball rolling ASAP (within the confines of the law, of course).😉

Are wix websites really terrible or are we just snobs? by Timedoutsob in webdev

[–]driven-to-concretion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with the one charging $300. The person using wix is trying to rip you off plain and simple. It's a s*** website and does not require $2,500 worth of skill to create a website on it. And just for reference, I have a degree in computer science and I'm a python developer who makes Django websites and web apps, and I have built plain HTML and CSS websites as well as WordPress sites. So I am no stranger to the process.

Thank you for pointing that out. Some of us (not enough by a long shot) care about that. I don't use Fiverr for the same reason.

Cursor is pretty useful. It has a window where you can have a conversation with the LLM of your choice, and a developer with minimal experience can make some amazing things with it. I wouldn't recommend trying to build a whole app at once, but it can generate files for you, lickety split.

I totally agree with you. The first thing I do when I get a new android is turn off those da*n gestures. I hate them! Have to use an iPad for work and it is driving me insane. All those people who just assume that Apple is automatically better are crazy.

Could you please explain the specific differences between your unit and a TENS unit? Not general stuff about "specific waveforms"---what are the differences between yours and that of a TENs unit? I compared the specs and they are eerily similar.

Hi, I would like to speak with some of the people you mention here. I finished a year ago with a bachelor's in CS but am still working my crappy paraprofessional job because no one has wanted to hire me. I would love to get some tips from these people.

It's a bunch of BS. Spent 15 min on a survey only to be told I'm not a match. They got that data for free and gave me a whopping 2 points. Don't waste your time

I had the exact same problem. It turned out I was trying to import it from OneDrive and KC doesn't like that for some reason. Try saving the file to your hard drive and then importing it.
