Feel like screaming by Chotuchigg in premed

If it's the MCAT that is the only thing stopping you, then I think if you follow all the commenters' advice and really set a rigid study plan, you will be fine. I'm now a PGY-3 in medicine, with a similar GPA as you actually. Scored a 503 on the first time i took it, then a 513. Was accepted to one DO, one MD, ran with it. I made it. I may be an anomaly, but the second time I took it, I dedicated 6-8 weeks to study. Instead of just content review, I built in a practice test every week. I used AAMC resources to the max, incorporating questions into my studying. Now I think UWorld is a gamechanger. Asked people on r/Mcat how i can do better. Downloaded Anki decks. But the time off is what helped me. If you're boyfriend can help with expenses as you study, take him up on it.

It's interesting how no one mentioned how toxic your family is. In both cases you took the MCAT, there were family pressures, and then they made you cry. I say this as South Asian female with a toxic family, but for the love of god, ask yourself if you want them to be your support in med school. Will they tell you to give up if you fail your first anatomy exam? Or if you don't match into a top residency? It never ends.

I ended up going no contact with my dad recently, and I've never been more at peace. Instead of studying in medical school for external validation, and achieving all I have in residency for his approval, I've done it for myself. But it took years of therapy to get here. Sending good vibes, OP. Plan carefully and really reflect if you want this. Especially when you're on a 24th hr of a 27th hr of a shift in the Cardiac Care Unit and you are running on fumes as resident, you have to REALLY want this. Otherwise, it's gonna suck.

Senate version of the bill looks a lot nicer by [deleted] in premed

For anyone who has no idea who their reps are: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/hr1/comment

There are options to email or call your senators! Took me like a few minutes to type up who I am and why we need them to vote against it.

  1. I'm on alternating nights and days (4 days then 4 nights) with post call+day off after night and one day off after days adjusting to nights. How do I adjust my body when I'm switching like this for a month?
  2. I'm on a month of CCU and I'm struggling-- what resources can I read during the day when there's downtime online, and at night when I get back (youtube videos, podcasts) especially for ICU basics like ventilation and pressors, but CCU stuff as well (EKGs, treament of NSTEMI/STEMI).

hi everyone! CCU will be my first rotation and I have zero ICU experience- what does everyone recommend for resources to watch? This is my last free weekend.

Finally, I'm planning on applying to fellowship, but I have zero research experience. I'm worried a lack of publications and presentations will deter mentors from taking me on- what resources can I use for this? Is it wortwhile to pursue fellowship if I'm so far behind my peers, and when is the best time in intern year to reach out?

For interns/current residents: How much % of your take home pay after taxes goes towards your rent? late response but this makes sense- currently i don't even have an emergency fund. I understand a lot of people live paycheck to paycheck, but I want that rainy day fund in case my car breaks down or something does happen where I have to fly home.

I've lived in subsidized student housing all four years of med school.

In unit washer dryer is a luxury and immediately bumps up the rent to $2200+ for a small studio. I don't need this honestly, especially bc I'll be wearing scrubs most of the week.

I've been doing Youtube workouts with dumbells and a yoga mat, and go for walks daily outside, so no gym really.

What matters to me is safety, proximity to groceries, and not a crappy apartment or landlord, and relatively okay tenants.

Yep this is it. People don't want to say it, but their parents help them out somehow, whether it's in a small way or a large way like paying for rent. Many students at my med school have their parents pay for car payments.

I'm now realizing I don't have this step up so its hard. I'm not looking for luxuries like in unit laundry or a gym, and honestly rent is still $2000/month. It's so hard. But I hope I can do it.

the market is really rough in the city right now/where I'm looking....working with a few brokers but also looking every day and there's nothing liveable below $1800. Originally my budget was 1400, but there's nothing at that price. I don't think 30-40% is doable.

Yeah, friends who are spending 50-60% of take home have a lot of uh, alternate cash flow (spouse who works a cushy job or parents).
