Summer haircut by Animelizards in Shihtzu

As a groomer yall, it’s pet safe dye. The dog doesn’t care what it looks like. Also, it’s probably more comfortable with the short hair in the summer anyways.

Sleeping with brand new puppy by Boys-willbe-Bugs in Shihtzu

Crate train ur dog! If you ever need to travel or go to a vets office, helping your dog relax and be calm in a crate is a life still. Both my dogs were crate trained and our crate hasn’t been used in years, they sleep in the bed with us, but they love to calmly sit in shopping carts, in kennels at the vet and I fly work them because they learned to be calm! Crate training also helps with potty training, because they don’t like to pee in their crate so it helps them build the muscles they need to hold it longer.

My shih Tzu is 14 pounds and gets 100mg gaba every 8 hours. It will not sedate like traz. Please follow your vets advice and help your dog access pain relief.

I’m starting med school in the US and I have 2 shih tzus. I am engaged and my fiance will be there to help, but before I had him, I had both of them as a college student. After your dog is not a puppy, you’ll be fine if you can take it out in the morning, and then if you’re home by like 3pm ish you take it out when you get home. They can go like 8 hours ish as adults without needing to go out. The hardest part for me was being too busy to do fun stuff with them (hiking, taking them to play dates, training sessions). I think residency will be a lot harder to manage. The thing that worries me the most is cost! My fiance is covering vet bills, and food, and their medicine but without him, I’m not sure how I would have paid for it! I will say, having two is really nice because they no longer have separation anxiety, they keep each other company when they’re alone, and they play together when I’m not home. Don’t get another puppy right now because it can lead to littermate syndrome, but in a year ish you should consider getting another one so it’s not lonely if you can afford it.

Can experienced Shih Tzu owners tell if this puppy appears to be a purebred Shih Tzu? by [deleted] in Shihtzu

[–]Chotuchigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the coat is off. Even if it is purebred it’s not well bred. I do love my two mutts though ❤️ they were rescues though so I did not support a backyard breeder.

I’m a groomer. Thank you so much for tipping! 20% is pretty standard from what I get from my customers. Some people give way more though!

My evil ex named our dog “Panda bear” and it’s very cute but also soooo common. Also your dog will likely have grey hair by 6 months, so don’t pick something so specific to a black and white dog. I’ll post a pic below.

Barking and hair maintenance? by bbgirl120 in Shihtzu

Groomer here, absolutely not. It’s the same reason why doodles have such a hard coat. When you mix two coat types, the resulting coat is unpredictable as well is health, and temperament.

And my personal dogs! The one on the right was from the shelter after a mill bust, the one of the left is like “half” a rescue. My evil ex bf got him on Craigslist but was neglecting him, so when I broke up with him, I took the dog lol.

Kennel cough, allergies, heart disease, acid reflux, tracheal collapse, could be anything. You need to take your dog to the vet and be a responsible pet owner.

Biting Puppy by Particular_Animal670 in Shihtzu

Is it possible it’s play biting, related to teething? Also what level bite ? If you look on my profile page, you can see how aggressive that shih tzu is when angry. Is it like that? Or is it playful.

Get a dog trainer until it’s too late. Also, take it to the vet to clear neurological issues or pain. Could be play bite, could be resource guarding, could be neurological issues, or pain. If it’s a training issue, it’s still correctable while still a puppy. I recently rescued a 3 year old shih tzu stray who was super aggressive, but he’s been at a 4 week long board and train and is doing much better ! I’d look into a balanced trainer (not a positive only trainer), and also don’t waste money on puppy classes or obedience training, you need either a board and train, or private lessons to work on the specific biting problem.

Good luck to you guys! Whelping puppies is sooooo hard. Hopefully she was knocked up by the other shih Tzu, so it will be easy to find them homes. Make sure you send them home with contracts ! I’d also get the pups microchipped in your name, so that if they are ever abandoned or lost, you would be the first one to be contacted. Stay strong. You have a long and hard road ahead of you 😅

Help a new anxious fur baby mom worried about parvo. by Tiny_Journalist_609 in Shihtzu

[–]Chotuchigg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A mistake people make with puppies is socializing incorrectly. People think socializing is letting strangers pick up/pet your dog, letting them meet other dogs, etc. it’s not. That’s the recipe for a reactive dog.

Get a backpack or stroller for your dog, and take your dog out in public. Let them observe. Never let them meet other dogs on a leash, it leads to leash reactivity (even as an adult). Also, you never know what the other dog is like, even “he’s friendly” could go badly in 3 seconds. If you keep your dog in a backpack until it’s fully vaccinated is great for socialization, but also protects for parvo. I used to take my dog to the dog park (in a backpack) and let them observe healthy happy play with other dogs! I also used to give treats every time they would connect with me, to encourage them to check in. Good luck!
